Michigan women's basketball goes cold, loses 65-64 at Purdue

By AnnArbor.com Staff

In its first two Big Ten games, the Michigan women’s basketball team upset preseason conference favorites Ohio State and Iowa.

Game 3, against last-place Purdue, didn’t go nearly as well.

After building a double-digit lead at Mackey Arena on Thursday night, Michigan went more than 11 minutes of the second half without a basket and missed three shots in the final six seconds of a 65-64 loss to the Boilermakers.

Brittany Rayburn’s 10-foot, pull-up jumper with 12.8 seconds remaining was the game-winner for Purdue (10-5, 1-2). Boilermaker freshman Courtney Moses got a hand on Veronica Hicks’ desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer - Michigan’s third shot of a hectic final possession.

Michigan’s Rachel Sheffer barely beat the shot clock and connected on a hurried 3-pointer from top of key for a 64-63 Wolverines lead with 21.6 seconds left. That was the first basket since the 11:45 mark of the half for Michigan, which went 0-for-9 from the floor and committed three turnovers during the dry spell.

With 7:16 left, Purdue freshman Courtney Moses, who finished with a game-high 22 points, hit her sixth 3-pointer of the night to put the Boilermakers ahead 58-56. It was Purdue's first lead since 8:12 remained in the first half.

Carmen Reynolds finished with team-high totals of 18 points and eight rebounds for Michigan. Kate Thompson scored 13 points and Courtney Boylan 11.

The Wolverines didn’t have the same scoring trouble in the first half, when they made eight of their last 11 shots, including 4 of 4 from 3-point range, to take a 42-35 halftime lead.

Michigan (9-6, 2-1) has a chance to climb right back into a first place tie in the Big Ten when they host the conference’s last unbeaten team -No. 11 Michigan State - at noon Sunday. The Spartans (14-1, 2-0) beat Wisconsin 62-43 on Thursday night.
