Mitch McGary, one of the top-ranked basketball recruits in country, plans to visit Michigan in September

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Mitch McGary, the No. 3-ranked high school basketball recruit by ESPN, plans to visit the Michigan campus in September and says the Wolverines are among the six programs he's considering.

McGary, a 6-foot-10, 225-pound power forward/center at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire and who is from Chesterton, Ind., said he's also looking at Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, Maryland and Florida. McGary offers a look into his thinking in a blog he's writing for ESPN.

It would be nice to have McGary come to Michigan, but I think he want to go where there is a coach that really does a good job of developing big men. Kentucky and Calipari are high on his list because of this amazing ability to develop big men, year after year. The college basketball world was stunned at how well and how fast Calipari developed Josh Harrellson. He also took off the rough edges of Cousins and launched him in the first round as a freshman. The guy can develop great players and prepare them for the next level. I don't know if Mitch McGary wants to be a one-n-done, but I sure where ever he goes, they will let him stay 4 years if he wants. However, few schools will have him ready for the next level in only one year.

Michigan recruits are almost all guards or swingmen. Getting a bonafide "big" would be huge. At the same time, I wouldn't hold my breath...

McGary's visits in September start with Michigan, then it's Kentucky, North Carolina and Duke. He's modeled his game after Tyler Hansbrough and Roy Williams personally recruited him. I'm probably wrong about him becoming a Dukie. Look like NC first, Duke a close second and Michigan a distant third.

This guy has Duke written all over him. Get real Michigan fans. We don't get 6'10" top three rated players any longer (since the Fab 5 era).

Time for a deep-pocketed booster to step up and make this happen. Gotta' outbid the good 'ol boys down in Chapel Hill and Lexington....lord knows they'll be ready to make it worth his while...

It would be huge for Michigan to land this type of player. That said he's probably a one-n-done.

This is a big deal for Michigan basketball. McGary is one of the most talented big men in the country and arguably the missing piece of the puzzle for Beilein's program. And he's seriously interested in Michigan. Obviously, we have an uphill battle to keep him out of the Carolina schools, but the fact he's already been to Michigan once is a very good sign. Also, he is friends with both Zack Novak and incoming recruit Glen Robinson III. That also can't hurt. Off all his finalists, Ann Arbor is the closest to his hometown of Chesterton, IN.
