Report slots Michigan as one of 12 teams in the 2012 Preseason NIT

By Nick Baumgardner

John Beilein basically let the cat out of the bag earlier this month with regard to the Michigan basketball program's participation in the 2012 Preseason NIT.

Asked about any movement on the 2012-13 schedule, Beilein told reporters the Wolverines had to wait and see what the Preseason NIT field looked like before they finalized the non-league portion of their slate.

"We don't know (yet). The Preseason NIT has not been announced (with) all the teams that are in it yet," Beilein said at the time. "So we're waiting to see that."

Tuesday night, CBSSports.com's Jeff Goodman reported the entire field -- Michigan included.

Per the CBS report, Michigan is among 12 teams participating in the tournament, likely joined as early-round host teams by Pittsburgh, Kansas State and Virginia.

The remainder of the field, per CBS, currently includes Fordham, Bowling Green, Delaware, Fairfield, Cleveland State, Lamar, Robert Morris and North Texas.

The Preseason NIT format includes four host pods. In order to advance to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden, which are held during Thanksgiving weekend, host teams must win two games in their respective pod.

The field and matchups for the Preseason NIT have not been officially announced by the tournament.

Michigan's other confirmed 2012-13 non-conference dates are a home game with Arkansas, a likely home contest in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and a road game at Bradley.

The Wolverines are also scheduled to take on West Virginia on Dec. 15 in the Brooklyn Winter Hoops Festival, which will be held at the soon-to-be opened Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

I'm sure David Brandon is making plans to move our host games to a bigger venue. Ford Field or the Palace? ;)
