A look at how universities fund athletic programs

By AnnArbor.com Staff

How does Michigan fund its athletic program? Eastern Michigan? USA Today provides some answers in an online athletics finance database for each Division I university. The database is compiled from revenue and expense forms each school has to submit to the NCAA.

A peek at the answers: For the 2007-08 school year, Michigan pulled in $40 million in ticket sales, $15 million in contributions, $20.7 million in conference distributions, $2 million in broadcast rights and zero from student fees.

At Eastern, according to the database, there was $8.2 million in student fees, $8.2 from institutional support, $4.9 million from indirect facilities and administrative support, and $1.2 million in conference distributions.

At Eastern, 8.2M in student fees...great, the student body subsidizes a losing program that benefits a few, meanwhile tuition goes up and the university drifts further from its academic mission!
