All Michigan sports teams average passing marks in NCAA's annual APR report

By Michael Rothstein

All 25 University of Michigan sports teams received passing marks in the latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate released by the NCAA on Wednesday.

“APR, is, it’s like dashboard indicators,” said Phil Hughes, Michigan’s associate athletic director of the Academic Success Program. “You’ve got to pay attention to the information and you’ve got to use it and understand what it’s trying to tell you about the performance of the student-athletes.

“The multi-year stuff is OK, but we have some dips in a couple sports and that’s important for us to understand.”

Teams receive APR numbers for single seasons and four-year averages. The best possible score is 1,000, and as long as a sports team stays above 925 for its four-year average, it faces no NCAA penalties.

The Michigan football team’s four-year average dipped from 947 to 936 this year, with a single-year score of 897.

Michigan men’s basketball team saw a jump in its multi-year score from 944 last year to 956 this year. Included in that was a 1,000 from the 2008-09 season.

The football team’s single-season score was affected by transfers and departures during the coaching transition from Lloyd Carr to Rich Rodriguez.

Eligibility and student-athlete retention are part of the NCAA’s metrics used to calculate the score. It is not uncommon for schools to suffer a dip in APR during a coaching change.

“You want to look very carefully at what happened student by student,” Hughes said. “What was their eligibility status? Did they transfer? Did they just quit their sport? You want to be very careful to analyze the whole picture.”

Both Michigan’s men’s indoor and outdoor track teams also had single-year scores under 925 with outdoor track at 921 and indoor track at 901.

Four Michigan sports received perfect multi-year APR scores: men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s gymnastics.

In addition to men’s basketball, 12 other sports received perfect one-year APR scores: baseball, men’s golf, men’s gymnastics, men’s swimming, men’s tennis, women’s basketball, women’s cross country, field hockey, women’s gymnastics, softball, women’s tennis and volleyball.

Eastern Michigan also had all of its sports pass the multi-year APR. Women's tennis, had a 1,000 score. Its football team scored 932 and men's basketball team had a score of 943. Both its football and men's basketball teams had a one-year score under 925, though.

The men's basketball team had a one-year number of 919 and the football team posted a 913.

We passed on the several year average...but last year's football team finished LAST in the Big Ten with a sub 900 score which matched the last place finish on the field. Clearly unacceptable and needs to be corrected fast....
