Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany disagrees with NCAA ruling on Cam Newton

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany disagrees with the NCAA's ruling on Auburn quarterback Cam Newton's eligibility, and he said in a telephone interview with the New York Times that "there ought to be consequences."

The NCAA ruled that even though Newton's father, Cecil Newton Sr., shopped his son to universities, Cam Newton knew nothing about it and is OK to play.

When I heard the NCAA ruling I was amazed. Yeah, sure. The problem is that it is very hard to investigate these kind of things. All they have to do is keep their mouth shut, deny everything. When Ed Martin infected the UM basketball team, he skated too, until he was caught in his gambling scam. Then he sang like a birdie and Newton won't get the heat either until somebody squeals. I hope the Heisman voters reject him due to this.

Yup, Jimmy D said the right thing. Maurice Clarett, oh, that is 100% entirely on Slick Jim Tressel. A horrible precedent!

Leather...I agree and disagree with your posts. First, answer me this. Is UM on 3 years probation? Is WVU facing the same violations as UM? And the coach involved was one in the same? "Just barely" or "full blown" doesn't matter when you have been placed, or are about to be placed, on probation. Agreed, the NCAA did say that the charges were exaggerated, but did the NCAA say that there weren't any violations? I am truly very happy that the penalty wasn't more severe that it is, but it is on the NCAA records that UM violated some rules and are on probation, not that UM is just barely on probation. Now, I totally agree with the post about the NCAA ruling on the Cam-Gate. You know and I know that there are super hyper fathers out there right now deciding how much their son or daughter is worth to colleges. You call the NCAA outright stupid. I say your are being nice to them!!! Don't even want to start on Delaney!!

also...to comment on this story... As I agree with Jim Delaney on the basis that the NCAA has found that his father was actively shopping him around for payment (thus rendering his amateur status void) and then stating he didnt know about it? he was 17 at the time and a dependent of his father. the precedent being set rightn ow is VERY VERY dangerous for the NCAA and its outright stupid. they have facts that pay for play was at least being utilized and regardless of any transaction or not the effort was made. but Jim Delaney is pathetic. Where was he during the Maurice Clarette thing? no credibility if you stand blindly when its happening in your own backyard...

Spin joe, spin.... what the NCAA DID conclude...is that yes, some rules were violated but hardly (why they dropped the major on RichRod) they also came flat out and said the reports were VERY exaggerated. so sure, they did practice a little too much unknowingly. clearly if he interpreted that rule all along, he would have followed the same guideline at TWO universities. this does not fall on RichRod, it falls on the compliance departments at both universities...the compliance department has the authority to shut the program down until something is done...period. As they should have but failed to do.

Theo....let me make sure I understand what you are saying. You throw mud at OSU and MSU for "their disregard for the rules" at the same time that you are praising a man who has disregard for the rules (the exact same rule) at TWO Universities?? Really?? I realized that OSU and MSU have had diregard for the rules for many, many years, but that doesn't make it OK that RR broke the rules...for the first time in school HISTORY!!! IMO it doesn't matter who reported the violations, or whether he skated out of the major violation, the fact is that he did break the rules; as proven by RR and UM admitting that he did and self imposing the penalties.
