Big Ten makes initial offer to Nebraska, Missouri, Rutgers and Notre Dame

By AnnArbor.com Staff

"Definitive" reports on Big Ten expansion seem to pop up by the hour, so take this latest one for what it's worth: A report from Sports Radio 810 WHB says the Big Ten has invited Nebraska, Missouri, Rutgers and Notre Dame to join the conference.

"It is not yet clear whether the Big Ten will expand to 14 or 16 teams but sources indicated Missouri and Nebraska are invited in either scenario," the station reported. "Notre Dame has repeatedly declined the opportunity to join the Big Ten. If Notre Dame remains independent, Rutgers would be the 14th team. The Big Ten would then decide whether to stop at 14 or extend offers to two other schools."

Here's the full report from 810 WHB.

This is all garbage talk, like buckeye talk - ain't got it, never had it, never will. College administrators won't happen to let this go, bad, bad karma come this way. Lets just play some football and shut much mouths about this notre dame not come this way for sure.

Personally, I live near Rutgers and would love for them to be added just so that I could actually get an opportunity to make it to some UM games now that I live far from home.

Willievrine, actually it's basic math according to my calculations. If we add enough schools we'll eventually start winning the national championship more often or on the other hand give RR the time he needs 2 more years counting this coming year and Mich. will start validating the big ten again. I'm not talking about showing up for the big show I'm talking about winning against the likes of Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, USC, Florida etc. and I mean winning when those schools are playing hot like Alabama this year.

Rutgers is still a stupid idea.

Sparky79; Im not sure we should become the Big Twenty because then we would have to have twenty-one teams. Get it? You see, the Big Ten has eleven teams so whatever the new name for the Big Ten Conference is it must have one more team than its name. Because in the Big Ten 10=11. Now, Im all for Nebraska, Missouri, ND and Rutgers joining our conference, but that would be 15 teams and the new name would have to be the Big Fourteen. The problem here is that we couldnt go to four divisions of four teams because the conference would only actually have 15 teams. In order to have four divisions of four teams we would have to become the Big Fifteen Conference. Does anyone but me see the quandary this puts us in? Finally, my calculus courses are paying off.

I can see adding Nebraska with their academic success,Stadium and fan tradition and being one of the all time top football programs but I have a hard time with Missouri and Rutgers. Looks like it is all about television sets. It will add prestige to the big ten with Nebraska and the Domers( who will not accept in my opinion).

It seems competition and tradition are not being considered in expansion.Let us invite the whole MAC to join....travel costs would be low and gross profit would be greater.

I was going to comment on there not being a 'source' of truth or 'source' of reasoning in the article, then I read the comments by Theo and Terry Star... although this expansion talk would give UM a chance to be 15-0 with their Bowl win, and play the same amount as Texas and Florida - I think it could be the demise of the Big Ten as we know it...

The Kietzman report; ".... according to multiple sources..", ".. but sources indicated...", "... sources say an offer will be...", "... sources close to the governing...", ".... according to reports...", "... According to sources, it seems..." This is great fictional reading. My sources say; I will win the Michigan Mega lottery on Tuesday evening, and then according to sources, I will come back Wednesday and win the Power Ball lottery. Then, according to sources, the President asks me to be his top advisor in Washington, but I can't acording to sources, because according to their reports, I am vacationing on my own uncharted and unknown island resort with the 'Runaway's' singing group, from the upcoming movie - according to sources that is. Thank God, all this expansion talk is fantasy football at best. The university presidents will shut this down completely, for the good of their school and devoted fans. Then 'not according to sources', the King will ask Theo and myself to advise on adding Missouri as the 12th team, and 2 more Big Ten games this season - 'not according to reports'.

I think ND will ultimately be forced to join the B10 whether they want to or not...although the league may not resemble what we have come to know and love as the B10 at that point. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't like the idea of a 16 team league; it will water down rivalries and render some of them completely moot. Also, with all of these supeconferences and money being thrown at every school in each conference, it's going to lead to more parity and a changing of the college football landscape as we've always known it, both in terms of rivalries and in terms of who's good and who's not.

It will be interesting to see how the remaining Big East teams react. will they eat each other and jump for the ACC? What will happen to the basketball schools in the Big East if all the football schools jump? A mad scramble is on the horizon.

Change is hard at times especially when my version of what it should be is rejected. I truly do believe for the most part especially when it comes to my Wolverines that my opinions should be validated and when there not I certainly will not agree with anyone else's ideas. Now I have agreed all along with Nebraska and Missouri joining my conference so for once their considering doing what I told them to do. I haven't decided if I want those other teams in I'll let you all know, stay tuned boys and girls.

Unfortunately, this will make UM 14th in the Big 10. We still have an edge over Indiana U this year.

Just add one team, that would give the big ten a championship game and extend the season by 2 weeks. I wish they wouldnt over complicate things by making 4 divisions of 4 teams each. With 2 divisions rivalries will be much easier to keep active.

Oh great, more expansion talk based on "sources." Take this one "for what it's worth?" Yeah, I'll do that, because I can guess exactly how much this one is worth! Tomorrow the Big Ten will deny the report again, then another media outlet with "sources" will tell us the Big Ten is going to become the Big Twenty. Ugh.
