Big Ten school could face Pac-10 in annual kickoff game at Rose Bowl

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Pac-10 officials are considering adding a kickoff game to the start of each season that would give the conference and West Coast a stronger preseason presence.

Such a game could feature a Big Ten opponent, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"There's a lot to think through," Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott told The Times. "I would only want to do it if it wouldn't tarnish what it means to play in the Rose Bowl. This is hallowed turf."

Here's the link to the full story from David Wharton at the L.A. Times.

I think it is a very neat idea, but the notion of "Rose Bowl being hallowed turf" is really important to remember. If you can randomly go there for yet another high profile game, it makes the January 1 Rose Bowl a bit less important--though still very special. Overall I like the thought process of increasing the conference's profiles and strength of schedule, rather than another App State game.

I think with Nebraska in the 10 it will only improve the whole league has to it's called competition at a higher level. I think things in the Rose Bowl out here will start to even out maybe even turn in the 10's favor. If you think about it USC owned the Rose Bowl for the most part over the years and they are not going to be as good without Pete, my opinion. As far as another game between the Pac and 10 as an opener that is in no way a New Years Rose Bowl game comparison. It probably would be a real nice game for the 10 team that gets scheduled, real nice atmosphere out here, nice stadium for those of you that haven't been there, I think it will be grass and good competition. Might give teams like Indiana and Arizona a chance to enjoy a match up in the famed Rose Bowl, why not?

I second John Kintner's opinions. Too many bowls!

The "hallowed turf" of the Rose Bowl has already been tarnished through the creation of the BCS. Granted, traditions change, but a lame-brained attempt at a college bowl championship has tarnished what a great tradition/system we had with the old bowl system. The Big 10 vs. Pac 10 champ in the Rose Bowl every year was great, along with the other conference/bowl agreements. Now more than 70 of the NCAA's division I schools get a bowl invite, just to generate ESPN and NCAA some revenue (not to mention give some less-than-qualified sportscasters some airtime)and draw the bowl "season" too far into January, more than a month after the regular season has ended. Kill the BCS and can someone answer *why* there needs to be a championship game? You're never going to create another system a'la the NCAA basketball tournament (which is also being destroyed over TV greed).
