Brady Hoke on The Huge Show: Denard Robinson will be back

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Denard Robinson salutes the Crisler Arena crowd after the video screen caught him taking in Wednesday night's game.

Lon Horwedel | AnnArbor.com

Michigan football coach Brady Hoke joined Bill Simonson on "The Huge Show" to talk about the whirlwind process of becoming the Wolverines' coach, and, most notably, the status of sophomore quarterback Denard Robinson.

Simonson asked Hoke if Robinson had informed him about if he'd be staying in Ann Arbor.

"Yes. Yes," Hoke said. "He is a tremendous young man. We're proud to have him here, obviously.

"We've had really positive and great conversations. The one thing I can tell you, he wants to have a Michigan degree when he's done here. He wants to be a guy who's part of a great football team and the great tradition at Michigan."

Hoke said he'll look to adjust his offense to capitalize on Robinson's talents.

"We're not going to try to put a square peg in a round hole," Hoke said. "I think Denard is capable of doing a lot of different things. He's a playmaker, as we all know.

Find an audio file with the entire interview here. Hoke also talks about recruiting and how he hopes to fix the Wolverines' defense.

Dusty, hang in there, a lot of these folks are just kids or think like kids. Dusty, your making good points and all these boys and girls know the truth but Dusty you have to realize the argumentative nature of kids will disagree with your points even when you are correct. Just have fun with the site. Brady may or maynot lead us to the promised land but that remains to be seen.

So referring to other readers as the "Koolaid Crew" with blatantly demeaning undertones, that's not a personal attack? Using homophobic rhetoric like "man-crush" in an obviously malicious manner, that's not a personal attack? But calling somebody a petulent child, that IS a personal attack? I'd love a moderator to explain this one to me.

Really Chrysta? Have you seen the personal attacks against Rich Rod around here? Those are cool, but not an attack on a commenter? This publication is so professional.

81wolverine... totally agree! We do need to let it go and move on. However the Koolaid Crew cant do it...and every article they have to go on and on about the fired coach. "Every time I want to get out...they pull me back in" -- Michael Corleone.

RR on Mallet "I dont care, he is not playing for Michigan...I only talk about players that blah blah blah" Translation: "Im a jerk, It is about me and my coaching system and I refuse to bend to the talent to make it work" Hoke on D Rob "He is a great kid, has lots of skills and we will work our offense around him. He is our QB" Translation: "This is about what is best for Michigan and for the kids on this team. We will do everything for them to succeed here." One coach is a man, the other was a weasel.

LOL@Dusty accusing the Freep of making up that Rodriguez quote. Wow the conspiracy theories run deep with the Koolaid Crowd dont they? The quotes did not come from an opinion piece Dusty, they are actual Rod quotes from a news source article... Associated Press... lol.

It's interesting how an article about Denard staying at Michigan has caused a number of people to get into yet another debate about Rich Rodriguez. Time to let it rest and move on people. The only way we move forward is look forward. Brady Hoke is the coach NOW at that's all that matters. I'm looking forward to watching Denard for the next two years and see him get his Michigan degree. Go Blue!

@ Dusty The defense got worse three years in a row becasue of who was the HC. Isn't the HC responsible for the whole team. The defense, the offense, and special teams ALL just got better because WHOEVER comes in to COACH them will be an improvement of whoever it was NOT COACHING them the last three games of this season. I did support RR three years ago. I didn't even start to contribute to any web site until the midway point of this season. Enough was enough. Find me one "professional" sport commentator or talking head that disagreed with the WCiMFH being fired. Dusty, it's OVER. The bell has RUNG. You are living in a past that no longer exists. Time to move on, just like your coach.

Dusty, I see you take exception to the Freep. Don't worry as is the case all over this country they will fall on hard times. Most of the honest folks here know that RR tried to be honorable to Mich. and do the right thing. Did he fail in that capacity, that is a matter of opinion regardless of win loss. If I just go by win loss average when a coach is starting out at a program then according to the RR haters Brady won't have a chance. Thank god for rational folks that realize that a new program being installed takes time maybe 5 years 4 for sure. I think given 4-5 years Mich. football can come back if these fickle fans give Brady the time he needs I will because 4-5 years is a realistic goal for a new coach installing a new system.

And did you actually use the word "massive" when talking about the talent he was left by Carr? Mallett was gone, no way he was going to keep him. Boren left... it is common knowledge around campus that he left because he was a fatass who didn't want to condition like everybody else. What other "talent" was there? I can't think of an offensive player who was any good outside of the o-line and Brandon Minor (who was injured literally every week). And on defense, there was Brandon Graham and a freshman Mike Martin... That's not "massive talent" by any stretch of the imagination.

Someone is following me. The @ sign usually signified the response to a specific post/poster. I understand PnLK that you perfer "STYLE" over function. "Style" over success. "Style" over performance. Being a disiple of the mad poet, you think it's better to have one 70 play for a TD than a sustained drive that keeps your suspect "D" rested and off the field. Football is entertainment, I know, it's why I watch Michigan football. But bad football is neither entertaining nor the type of Michigan football I care to see. But I never gave up and I can say I watched, whincing, the last game the WCiMFH ever coached at the Gator bowl. So much for "STYLE". Go Blue!

Dusty

Fri, Jan 14, 2011 : 12:25 p.m.

And Blu-n-Tpa: I find it amusing that you'd say the team "just got a lot better" before they've played a single game. Seems to me you're all aboard for Hoke. Did you have the same attitude about RR 3 years ago? Somehow, I doubt it. And I've been following Michigan football for the better part of 3 decades now. I won't apologize for seeing potential (and PROGRESS) in Rich Rod's system that you and the rest of the mob didn't. He busted his ass despite having the entire world stacked against him from day 1, and people are so immature they're STILL piling on. It's pathetic, pety, and it makes me ashamed that you are associated with the same university that I am. You DID attend UM, didn't you?

Dusty

Fri, Jan 14, 2011 : 12:19 p.m.

The "D" will be better based on common sense. The entire defense will have another year of experience (some of whom had zero experience before this year), several injured players are returning, and Mike Martin is coming back. Explain, please, how you think they WOULDN'T be better? Oh, and did you really cite the FREEP as your source about Mallett? Wow. Just... wow. They've been out to get Rich Rod since the minute his name was muttered as a candidate at UM. They've literally led a daily campagne to get him fired for 3 years now. If you really, truly believe for ONE MINUTE that he looked at the QB roster at Michigan and didn't immediately think he needed to keep Mallett, regardless of his style... you're just not being honest with yourself. He had no shot at keeping Mallett, period. Mallett was leaving before RR was hired. And seriously? You think parents don't lie to the media? Have you heard of Cecil Newton?

Blu tpa still trying to impress us, bottom line Bo, Mo, LLoyd and RR are gone. Of all of them I liked RR's entertaining style the best, I liked LLoyds style the least. I think Mo was maybe the toughest and good ol Bo was consistantly a big ten winner. Hard to discuss Mich. football without discussing the history of it and RR will be the history of michigan football forever whether any of you liked him or not. I think DR made a wise choice and I think all of us are thankful to RR for bringing DR here in the first place at least all of the rational fans.

@Dusty Not to pile on but on what would you use to back up the "D" would be better this year? Tarot cards? "The gypsy with the rose tattoo"? You're just trolling for hits! No self-respecting football fan would look at the last three games of the WCiMFH's career and see progress. What about special teams? Those don't count to you either? (certainly didn't matter much to "he who is leaving town" since he ignored it for 3 years). I hope you enjoy wasting your time. The bell has rung and the fight is over. There's a new champ in AA! With this hire the TEAM just got a lot better! So are you for the TEAM or for the WCiMFH?

CBSSports.com wire reports Jan. 8, 2008 ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Rich Rodriguez does not expect to coach wide receivers Mario Manningham and Adrian Arrington or quarterback Ryan Mallett at Michigan. Manningham and Arrington will skip their senior seasons and Mallett will transfer, according to Rodriguez. "Those are the indications I've gotten," Rodriguez told the Associated Press on Tuesday night. "I've talked to all three at various times recently. I talked to Adrian today, and he told me he's leaning toward going pro. "We wish all of them the best." When told what Rodriguez said, Jim Mallett insisted his son has not made a decision. "Coach knows more than I do, I guess," Jim Mallett told the AP. In Mallett's case, Rodriguez said he is not interested in listening or waiting. "I don't care," Rodriguez said. "He's not playing for Michigan. I'm concerned with who's playing for Michigan." Source: Detroit Free Press -- January 9, 2008 Any questions Dusty? Didnt think so. This was the first huge mistake in one of many that your-boy made, which lead to his pathetic downfall in only 3 years...the worst 3 years in Michigan football history (documented). Any questions? Didnt think so. Rich Rodriguez failed. It started with his inability to conceive of working with the MASSIVE talent that was left to him by Lloyd Carr. Brady Hoke in 1 day has already shown that he will not make this type of mistake. Go Blue!!!

"The defense would be better regardless of who was coaching them." Again, Dusty...that's kind of funny, considering the D got worse each year under RR's staff. Those guys just never could tackle, cover receivers or play aggressively under his staff, and hopefully now they will be taught to do these things. But, clearly, some people are going to want to give credit elsewhere when/if that happens.

Dusty you are wrong... RR said "Mallet is tranferring" before Mallet did. I can find proof of that if you want...but do you really want to be proven wrong? I dont think you do. Flat out: Mallet's dad said "coach RR knows something we dont" when he was informed by the Associated Press that RR said Ryan would transfer. But keep going back to that RR love...you guys have been proven wrong over and over and over. Maybe mgoblog would love you over there with your bud Brian...btw 6-18 5-22 38 pt loss in the bowl game out.

joey z is right about people needing to let stuff go...and that includes the Ryan Mallett argument. It's not worth writing a book to "set someone straight." Dusty is probably that guy I responded to over at ESPN.com who pulled out this same argument, but just to reiterate here--whether Mallett was going to transfer or not, RR still obviously is a coach who is scheme-oriented and that hurt Michigan a lot. Brady does not seem to be that way, and I'm happy he's not. I will not cheer until Denard officially says he's coming back...this seems more like Brady THINKS Denard is coming back. Either way, after years of spending Hate Week in an incredibly bad mood because I "knew" Michigan would lose AGAIN, I now look forward to The Game again. The Michigan-OSU basketball game the other night is the way that rivalry is SUPPOSED to look, i.e. even if Michigan loses we're COMPETITIVE and scaring the crap out of a better OSU squad. That would be good enough for me in year 1 under Hoke.

Dusty

Fri, Jan 14, 2011 : 2:10 a.m.

Well, the defense is still going to be manned by mostly the same team you saw this season. Add JT Floyd, Jared Van Slyke and Troy Woolfolk coming back from injuries (all in the secondary). Add a year of trial-by-fire to several freshmen who played this past season, plus the kids who redshirted. Everybody but Obi Ezeh and Jonas Mouton (both friggin terrible) is back. The defense would be better regardless of who is coaching them.

Dusty

Fri, Jan 14, 2011 : 2:06 a.m.

Macabre Sunset, allow me to set you straight: Ryan Mallett enrolled in January of 2007. Before the season even started that fall, he was quoted as being homesick and there were rumors he was thinking about transferring to Arkansas (where he is from). Midway through the 2007 season, WELL before anybody had any idea Carr was retiring and Rich Rod would be coming in with his spread offense, Mallett talked about transferring at the end of the season. He was going to transfer no matter what, even if Carr had stayed. He never wanted to come to Michigan, only choosing to because Mitch Mustaine was at Arkansas. When Mustaine left Arkansas, literally the week Mallett enrolled at Michigan, Mallett started talking about going home. Rich Rod spoke to Mallett several times trying to change his mind, talking about how he could easily tailor his offense to be pass-heavy, like it was when he was at Tulane with Shawn King. But it was futile. Mallett wanted to go, period. Feel free to hate RR for any number of legitimate reasons, but don't fabricate reasons.

I have been skeptical of Hoke"s resume, but it seems so far like he is certainly doing and saying all the right things. Good job. Firm believer in positivity here....Just wish I didn't have to keep hearing the negative comments about RR. It's getting old. He's gone. Need to let it go! And to RR supporters, you also need to let it go and try to have a little faith in the new guy. Just sayin

Such an amazing compare-and-contrast to Hoke's predecessor, who had one playbook and no room for a talent like Ryan Mallett, who will likely be drafted in the top ten this spring. I think the players are going to react well to Hoke's respectful approach. He coaches players, not specific schemes.
