Charles Woodson calls Brady Hoke's performance 'remarkable,' says Michigan-Ohio State rivalry 'is back'

Former Michigan star Charles Woodson, now an All-Pro corner with the Green Bay Packers, has enjoyed watching the Wolverines this season.

Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson knows Michigan football coach Brady Hoke as well as anyone.

Hoke served as a defensive line coach for the Wolverines during Woodson's three-year career at Michigan (1995-97).

Now an All-Pro cornerback with the Green Bay Packers, Woodson kept a close eye on Hoke and his alma mater this season — and he says the results were "remarkable."

"I don't think there's too many people in Michigan, Michigan fans or alums, that thought he would have the turnaround that he did," Woodson said on the Rich Eisen Podcast. "They thought he would have it going in the right direction, but to get to 10 wins after what we've gone through the past three or four years was remarkable."

Woodson hit on various other Michigan-related topics during the interview with Eisen, from the job defensive coordinator Greg Mattison has done, to Denard Robinson's turnover struggles.

He also touched on his relationship with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and how its grown since their days at Michigan.

In addition, Woodson gave his thoughts on Ohio State's recent decision to hire Urban Meyer.

In short: He's excited for next season.

"I just think it's great, I really do," Woodson said. "When I look at Michigan and Ohio State and that whole rivalry, I feel like with what we have coaching-wise (at Michigan) and now bringing in Urban at Ohio State, I think that whole Michigan-Ohio State rivalry is back."

Charles Woodson continues to epitomize the class act that is the Michigan man. From his off field donation to Motts childrens hospital to his on field performance Mister Woodson is a champion of men. I also believe Michigan has a special talent that will be our next great cover corner unseen since Donovan Warren, his name is Blake Countess and folks he is gonna be a very special player before all is said and done. Go Blue!

Jason, awesome comment, boy you're not kidding, it sure seems that way doesn't it. Can you say hall of fame? How great did the #1 & 2 players (Peyton Manning) in the Heisman of 1997 turn out to be? Impressive couple of guys there.

Having played for Bump and Bo at Michigan, I've always loved this rivalry. This year I was nervous leading up to and into the game. The last 3 years I just resigned myself that this game was another loss. There is a young Public Defender in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, where I practice law, who is an OSU grad. If she weren't so pretty I'd be tired of buying her lunch on the Monday after the game. I haven't been around the past week so I haven't been able to enforce MY winning the bet!!! When she has lunch with me, I'm sure everyone thinks I'm either her father or sugar daddy!!! If only the sugar daddy part were true.....She is smart, sweet and pretty...and an OSU grad!!! I agree with Charles Woodson that this rivalry is back. Hence, my nerves before and during the game. It's much better watching The Game when you know Michigan has a chance to win. It's much better for the Big 10 when Michigan and OSU are dominant. I'm not a big fan of the championship game this year because the two rightful teams that have made the Big 10 aren't playing. So what if UM and OSU played just last Saturday. Final word...The players of this rivalry usually have lots of respect foe each other. Many end up teammates in the NFL. It's the fans that drag this rivalry into the gutter.

Hey #58, I love reading your posts, as far as the young lady you have lunch with who went to the school that I won't name............Ask her out to dinner man, come on. A worldly ex-football player who went to one of the best schools in the world has to be intriguing to her, charm her with that cool, smooth intellect and great stories you have up your sleeves. Keep us posted on your escapades my man.

Lorain, I'm sure Meyer will do a good job at OSU. I want him to be like John Cooper, where a win against Michigan is rare. L'm not a fan of the spread offense. We had it here for 3 years and all it did was cause us 3 years of misery. The other thing is that Meyer is 0-3 against Michigan as a head coach, even with his all-universe quarterback Tim Tebow. He may lose talent because spread offense coaches like the little, fast players including linemen. The spread is based on speed, not power. When they run into a power team with speed its difficult for them to handle. Since I'm a Bo disciple, I believe that championships are won with great defense. Spread offense coaches and fans think defense is an afterthought. Watch what RR does at Arizona. Even though Hoke proved that Michigan can win more games with a great defense, a leopard can't change its spots. RR will ignore the defense at Arizona, too. He'll get killed in the Pac 12. He got killed in the Big 10.

So #58, what's your take on the new hire at Ohio, Meyer? I think he's an 'opportunist', and as such, the players will sense that he really isn't in this for then, or the school. I also wonder, if he does go to 'the spread', if he'll lose out on talent, that Hoke can then recruit, as well as soften up his own D.....curious what you think?

It's more stressful to watch knowing that you can control nothing except the tv.

Nice post #58 So tell me...is it more stressful for you to watch 'the game' on tv as compared to playing in it?

Kudos to Woodson. Getting out of ohio, Heisman and Super Bowl Champ. Wasn't it him that during the last three years on NFL introductions said Charles Woodson, Lloyd Carr's Michigan Wolverines or was that Breaston ? Go Blue.

Chuck Woodson is one of the greats in this rivalry and I have complete respect for him. That 1997 game is one of the best all time OSU-um games with everything on the line, woodson and boston going at it- it was great football to watch... of course until my buckeyes lost. I still cringe when I see videos of him running up the sideline or when Stanley Jackson hand delivered a pass to him in the endzone. Stanley Jackson was the MVP of that game for you guys. Anyways he is right- THE GAME is back. Here is to many more great OSU-um games in the next 10 years. Go Bucks! Go Big Ten!

I'm still trying to figure out why Woodson would get a tattoo in the image of the state of Ohio. Maybe the guy at the parlor couldn't trace his own hand.

@ Mr. betterthanu I've lived in both states. There is absolutely no comparison. The state of Michigan is a million times better. Ohio is boring. Nobody goes on vacation to Ohio, but Ohioans go on vacation to Michigan. If Ohio is so great, why do great football players leave their state and go to the UofM and remain lifelong proponents of the University?

Cause Ohio is the motherland where all great athletes and coaches come from! All of um's great players are from my state of Ohio!

Having guys like Woodson out in the NFL is such a big part of recruiting guys, especially when Woodson and others are so high on michigan. It really helps in ohio and other states where Michigans main competition and rivalries are from. It is amazing too how many RR homers on here were saying that this team would not do good and they would end up anywhere from 2-10 to 7-5 because RR groomed them and they would not perform for Brady. We saw the opposite of that. We saw what these players are capable of with good coaching, effort, and attitude! This saturday should be fun to watch unfold and see who mich. may end up playing and where they may end up! Go Blue!

I can't wait to see the rivalry in about three years. That will give Brady Hoke and Urban Liar time to get their recruits situated in their offensive and defenses schemes. It should be akin to Bo and Woody. Beauty...

Yes, part of the last three years wasn't so much the losing (although that was awful), but feeling like you had no chance. Last Saturday leading up to game time, I took pause to reflect on how I felt like there was "a chance" - and that was nice.
