Ex-Michigan football OL Mark Huyge receives Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award

Former Michigan offensive tackle Mark Huyge was honored Wednesday for outstanding academic achievement.

Former Michigan football offensive lineman Mark Huyge never made it easy on himself in the classroom.

As a navy architecture and marine engineering major, the former offensive tackle perhaps had more daily obligations than anyone else on the Wolverines' roster in 2011.

It apparently wasn't too difficult for Huyge, though, as he was honored Wednesday with the prestigious Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award by the league office.

Huyge was one of just 30 Big Ten football players to earn the honor, which required a student-athlete to maintain a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher for the 2011 season.

The 6-foot-6, 302-pound Huyge made 12 starts at right tackle last season for the Wolverines, and appeared in all 13 games. Huyge made 28 starts in his five-year Michigan career.

Huyge was invited to to Washington Redskins' rookie minicamp following the season, but is not listed as a member of the club's roster heading into training camp.

A total of 587 Big Ten student-athletes from 36 sports earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award for 2011-12.

At Michigan, 33 student-athletes received the award -- and three athletes (swimmers Courtney Beidler and Megan Craig, along with wrestler Justin Zeerip) finished the academic year with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
