Ex-Michigan quarterback Tate Forcier reportedly no longer with San Jose State

By Kyle Meinke

The Tate Forcier saga has taken another turn.

The former Michigan quarterback, who has been linked to several schools since leaving Ann Arbor after his sophomore season in 2010, no longer is with his latest school, San Jose State, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

An anonymous source told the paper that academics played a role in the move.

Forcier, a San Diego native, started all 12 games for Michigan in 2009 before being surpassed by Denard Robinson in 2010 and struggling in the classroom.

He backed up Robinson eight times that season, but was sent home from the Gator Bowl for being academically ineligible and left the program before Brady Hoke was hired on Jan. 12.

He was expected to be the starter next season for San Jose State.

i have no sympathy. having school fully paid for and a high profile status just isnt enough for some people. it is not hard to pull a 2.5 GPA. i believe in second chances, which is what tate received, but when you ruin that, there is no one to blame but yourself.

For those who are calling out the Annarbor.com website for putting this up, I say it is fair game. Tate was a big part of our team before he had to leave the team, and it is of interest to know what happened to a former prominent player. Just yesterday, Greg Brown (a Brady Hoke recruit) was reported to have signed with Findlay college. We see so much about these guys when they are here, and I think it is fair game to hear about them after they leave. Unfortunately for Tate Forcier, he has had a much more circuitous path than most. It is interesting that all 3 Forcier men did transfer from their original places, but Tate seems to be much more unsteady given his road than the others. Wish him well. It is never happy to see a young student struggle.

Typo: Just yesterday, Annarbor.com reported that Greg Brown signed elsewhere, showing that they will report on many ex-Wolverines, regardless of the star status.....

A shame that their is no form of pro-football farm system like baseball has. Clearly Forcier is interested in playing football and not being a college student and so he's condemned to try and work through a corrupt and outdated NCAA system that mandates that the all players be "non-professional" (i.e., unpaid) students. Meanwhile the coaches make seven figure salaries and the universities and athletic conferences banks millions off of their efforts.

Oh the injustice that poor Tate has to actually follow the same protocol and "corrupt system" as all other collegiate athletes have to!

I'm still mystified why this poster child for a bad era of UM football, who left the school in a huff and with a few backhanded insults, who has over and over demonstrated that he's a loser even while he was turning in subpar performances on and off the field, still consistently brings out a fanclub of supporters with every story on his continuing failures in life.

I see no point in this article. This is a young man in college, not a professional sport figure. Why is AnnArbor.com seemingly stalking him? My grandson is this age and honestly, I think the undertone here is pretty ugly......."look this young man is failing." Pointless and cruel. Just my opinion.

I think some posts here show what has happened to our society. In the same way we love to "create" heroes....we love to kick them when they are down and out. No more personal understanding.....this is someone's son, someone's grandson. Just a name and a football player...so fair game. I love the internet.....I hate the internet.

Annarbor.com is not stalking Tate Forcier. The story appeared in the San Jose media. Tate was a big deal in Ann Arbor in 2009. People are interested.

you make some valid points as usual. Although "cruel" may be a bit over the top. I don't disagree with what you say but..... I will say that media scrutiny and a fascination factor come in to play when you were the BMOC and QB at a major University. Fair or not it comes with the territory and kids should know that. He should have been prepped by his guidance councilor..errr.....never mind on that one. ;)

It's entirely possible that he's dealing with an undiagnosed learning disability. Many students struggle throughout their primary and secondary schooling with conditions that frustrate their ability to learn. I am reminded of Jacques Demers, the NHL hockey coach and Canadian senator, who bravely admitted at the tender age of 60 that he was illiterate. I hope TF finds a way to overcome his challenges - which clearly lie outside of football - and fulfill his potential, whatever that may be.

It has nothing to do with home schooling, you are purely speculating and it seems like you are just trying to make a political statement. Schooling has a lot about it to be desired and a lot not to be desired as well. Now as for Tate, having spent a little time with his family, I just think he's lazy when it comes to doing his schoolwork and I have various sources that most people don't know about because of acquaintances I have and I really believe it is that simple. Anyway, it's too bad because if he was gonna be the starter then he would have had a chance to play against Arizona next season, that would have been fun to see how that would have turned out, Lol! I said last year when he was looking for schools that he should stay home go to junior college or div. III as someone else suggested and have his family be around to monitor him and keep him on the straight and narrow, they keep making bad decisions, I hope the kid has a good future ahead of him.

"Now as for Tate, having spent a little time with his family, I just think he's lazy when it comes to doing his schoolwork" How did he get lazy about doing his school work? Most people, conventional wisdom, AND a few studies indicate the expectations from parents at home largely dictate how kids do in school. (ya there are exceptions) He has struggled academically at two schools now. At some point folks would logically look at his High School and his home life for possible answers. In his case if he was home schooled they are one and the same.

Two of my very best friends were homeschooled at some point in their education, and they are finely adjusted members of society and contribute to it daily. Using the logic you're demonstrating, homeschooling does a better job than more conventional educational settings, but I know that's just false logic to jump to those conclusions. Given the tensions surrounding education in Michigan, I'd expect most people to steer clear of inflammatory remarks like yours.

99 percent of the athletes that have been declared ineligible are not homeschooled. If I named any of them a2com would delete my comment (as they did at 9:17am). ."...With the parents commuting Robert was often on his own as the little man of the house. I think Tebow is a good counter-point to the original smokeblwr comment. But it seems to be a pride thing from my perspective. From what I've read about Tebow, he is an extremely humble person, while, from reading Forcier's website and from other sources, Forcier seems to be overly proud.

an interesting thought. Sure its just a "suggestion" and there is no mass of data to support or refute it. And sure there are plenty of examples of famous home schooled people whose socialization skills are just fine. But an inquiring mind would wonder how "socialization skills" might develop in those two very different environments. One might wonder if there is a bigger pattern to which there will always be exceptions.

I feel bad for Tate. He clearly was not ready to be in the spotlight. He was a star at Michigan as a true freshman, and if he would have dealt with the competition with more maturity, and kept his nose clean off the field, he would be loved by all...even if he was not starting. Clearly that was not in the cards for him.

It appears Tate has lost his focus. Very sad. He'll have to step down to a JUCO or D3 school if he ever hopes to play in college. I hope he can turn his life around. Maybe Rich Rod can straighten him up in AZ.
