Final Big Ten football power rankings

By AnnArbor.com Staff

After soaking in the bowl aftermath, Adam Rittenberg at ESPN.com published his final Big Ten football power rankings of the season today. Where did Michigan land? Hint: Not in the top three. Not even in the top five.

Here's the link to Rittenberg's story.

The D will be better. Tuner is going to turn some heads in the Big Ten. I met Cullen Christian at the Army All-American Bowl and he is excited to be coming to Michigan. He's going to bring some good size and cover skills to the secondary. He also told me that one of the players on the East team (who was undecided at the game) told him they were planning to announce their choice to commit to Michigan on signing day. He would not tell, but was excited about this player joining the Maize-n-blue. Can't wait to see who it is! Also, I was getting Dillon Baxter autograph when he told me he was likely going to back out of USC, and low-and-behold there were two Buckeye recruits ready to suck him in...he told them he does not like the cold, so I'm not expecting Michigan to land him unless Tate can do some sweet talking [which, who knows what Tate's even thinking these days?]

Why isn't RR on Tennessee's short list? Oh yeah, he's 8-16 at Micigan, that's why.

This is the new and improved Michigan. Have a little faith. Rod's getting his guys in there and his spread offense system is the best. Smaller, faster is college football today. Rod is ahead of his time. They will be in a top bowl next year...

Michigan is in for a long downhill slide to the bottom of the Big 10. The offensive guys are too small and the defensive guys have no talent. Mix that with bad coaching and you have just where Michigan is today - at the bottom looking up at all the other league teams that made smart hires and are on the way up. Maybe Brandon will have enough guts to fire RR after we are still crappy this fall. That is our only hope because if we keep going like we are no kid with any talent is ever going to want to come here and all our glory will be in the past - just like Harvard and Yale. No one cares about them anymore and Michigan is heading that way too. These three years of RR will be a big blemish on our history and it will take many, many years to forget about him and what he has done to Michigan. That is, if we ever get back to being good which is looking doubtful.

Michigan will win the big ten next year.

AZ said it... Michigan fans are lowering their standards, not by choice, but by force. They're left with no option when Michigan finishes 9 or 10 in the Big Ten in each of the last 2 years. If this were 3 years ago, can you imagine fans ever aspiring to have the team reach anything bu top 1 or 2? A top 5 finish would be a monumental achievement at this point.

It's hard to argue this list...it's pretty much the order of finish in the conference. OSU is without question the best team in the conference now, with Iowa, PSU, and Wisconsin battling right behind them. No one else in the conference is a world beater, though, and Michigan fans should accept nothing less than a top 5 finish...which even that is woefully low by Michigan standards.

Tater's optimisim is a little less arrogant than it was last year when he predicted 8-9 wins and a triumph over OSU, all the same he'll be eating his words this time next year. RR was the wrong hire plain and simple. He's cost the university millions, brought on an NCAA investigation, deals with shady characters and can even win 6 games. Adam Rittenberg hit those power ratings on the head. Looks similiar to what will happen next year with Wisconsin being 3rd rather than PSU and Michigan possibly moving up to 8th or 9th. Either way next season won't save Rich Rod's job.

Barwis is just facet of the football program. Spinning in circles and throwing darts till something sticks is where everyone doubts. Nothing is bigger than UM football, not even RR or Barwis. They are some of the ones helping the program. But since you asked, watch the sophs and juniors to see the Barwis results if that is what you are looking for.

Frankly, I hope the Gophers catch fire next year. They're doing better than normal; they've got a new stadium. It'd be fun to see them do well.

I don't disagree with this. Illinois finally started waking up as the season wore on, and credit them for making the right call to can their OC and keep Zook.

Based on the performances this year of OSU, Iowa, PSU, Wisco, MSU and the player loses, it seems that UM is right on track for another.500 season or.500 at best in the Big Ten which is quite a leap from the past 2-6 and 1-7 conference record. After that record, it will be goodbye to RR. There is simply no way for the small/speed running spread of RR to dominate the big ten. The old time big/power style with very tough defense still dominate the league. Get RR out before he destroys UM more.

10. Michigan (5-7): The offense should be potent in 2010, but Rich Rodriguez must repair a defense that really couldn't stop anybody. Michigan loses its two top defenders in end Brandon Graham and cornerback Donovan Warren, so the coaches need to identify and develop talent during the offseason. The Wolverines simply can't afford another bowl-less season. That's about right.
