Former Michigan guard Steve Schilling goes to San Diego in the sixth round of NFL Draft

By Michael Rothstein

It looks like Jonas Mouton will have company in San Diego.

The Chargers, who selected the former Michigan outside linebacker in the second round of the NFL Draft on Friday night, picked former Michigan offensive lineman Steve Schilling in the sixth round on Saturday.

Schilling, who ended up being the 201st selection, planned on watching the draft with family and friends at his home in suburban Seattle.

"I wanted to be home for it," Schilling told AnnArbor.com on Thursday. "From the time I went to college I always said if I got a chance to be drafted, I'd be home in Seattle for it.

"So it's going to be nice. It's going to be a good weekend."

It is also one that now had a positive outcome for the 22-year-old. San Diego, on its latest roster, has three guards: Kris Dielman, Tyrone Green and Louis Vasquez. That could change, though, once the lockout is lifted and free agency happens.

Schilling (6-foot-4, 302 pounds) was one of the last recruits from the Lloyd Carr regime on the Michigan roster, along with Mouton.

Both were recruited by current Eastern Michigan coach Ron English.

Michigan still has linebacker Obi Ezeh and tight end Martell Webb as potential draftees. If neither gets picked, they must wait until after the NFL lockout ends to sign free agent contracts.

Congrats to Steve Schilling. Had Michigan stayed pro style, he would have surely been drafted higher. As it is, he will need a couple of years to re-adjust his skillset & technique from the HS offense and poor coaching to the NFL game...but Steve is physically gifted and intelligent enough to get it done. He also goes to a good team.... nice weather down here too...go Blue this is Michigan.

That "HS offense" got him drafted. Boren played in a pro style at OSU, was a highly touted 4-star recruit and made multiple B10 all conference teams. He didn't get drafted. So much for your theory.

And look who didn't get drafted -- Justin Boren. Those who stay...

This wasn't intended as a "dig" at former coach. It was just a "let it be" statement. Boren left a long time ago. I was upset at the time, but he obviously knew something the rest of us didn't, and he went on to get what he wanted. THat's all. And just consider what the late Jim Mandich said--he would give anything to play another game in college. So those B10 rings are important. Good for him. Good for Schilling. The fact that Mouton went in the second round was more surprising to me, as he was not always the best defensive player on the field last year. Good for him, too.

heartbreakM -- That's cool, though I'd take a $1 million dollar plus salary and NFL fame over three B10 rings any day of the week and twice on Sunday (pun intended). I bet Justin isn't thinking about how great it was that he won three B10 rings right now. It's OK, just keep finding ways to dig on RR. I find it humorous.

@heartbreakM Well, it sounds like Boren will have to follow the Buckeye tradition of selling merchandise. He won't be receiving any money from the NFL, and plowing only pays so much.

Justin Boren has 3 B10 rings. Glad for Schilling for getting drafted, but in this case, those who stay got drafted, while those who left (in Boren's cases) were champions. Both got what they wanted.
