Former U-M player, coach Andy Moeller charged with DUI

By AnnArbor.com Staff

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Authorities say Baltimore Ravens assistant offensive line coach Andy Moeller is facing drunken driving charges.

Maryland State Police say the coach was arrested after being pulled over for speeding on the Maryland beltway early Saturday.

Moeller's attorney Andrew Alperstein says the coach will plead not guilty to seven charges, including driving under the influence and negligent driving. Ravens spokesman Kevin Byrne says the team is aware of what happened.

Moeller was acquitted last month of charges of driving under the influence and negligent driving. Alperstein says the judge found that Moeller was not driving.

Moeller has been on the Ravens' staff since 2008 and coached for eight years at Michigan after playing there. He is the son of former Michigan head coach Gary Moeller.

Gary Moeller was a Phenomenal asset to the University of Michigan. He was a Great Mentor to the thousands of players he coached at Michigan. I think Bo Schembechler knew who was the best man to succeed him at Michigan! Gary's Michigan Teams won and they played Defense. They beat Ohio State often and they won Bowl Games!! Let us hope that Rich Rodriguez is not the future at Michigan if his teams can not tackle and can not win tough Big 10 games. Moeller and Carr won tough Big 10 games often!! Andy Moeller accomplished a lot at Michigan as a player and as an Assistant Coach. Andy knew how to Tackle! He led the Wolverines in tackles for two seasons.

heartbreakM you are right, I was way out of line for attacking Gary Moller, I am sorry. If Coach Rich were to not make progreess in Michigan's Big Ten Standings (that bar this year is 9th place) three years in a row then yes he should be fired.

2 bad news stories on ex-M players today, with this and Braylon Edwards. I certainly hope that Moeller gets the help he needs (if he has a problem) but wasn't there some other story years ago that he also was DUI? I might be wrong. I do think alcohol is a bigger problem with this sports culture than we give credit for, and I have raised alcohol abuse as a potential problem with night games at M stadium. People laughed me out, but I do think Michigan ought to be aggressive with combatting this as a problem. I also will call out jameslucas for being so nasty about Moeller, the ex-coach. He/she has been very vocally negative on those who are critical of RR (support your school, your team, etc) yet how does he then just smear Moeller? Was Mo the coach? Yes!! Then support him!! And his record in 5 years at UM had less losses than RR has so far. (and by the way, Mo was fired after 3 years at Illinois when they had enough--is that what should happen to RR using jameslucas's logic?)

Look at everybody jump to conclusions that this a family with alcohol problems? Did anybody read the part of the article that Andy plans on pleading not guilty? There may be a lot of details not included in the article including actual BAC numbers. innocent until proven guilty Andy was a great coach at Michigan and a great man.

That was a mistake it should have been 5 years not 6 year, but one could say I was using the same plus one time counting method as Coach Rich haters.

He's a Michigan man, perhaps with a problem. Let's send him our best wishes & support. We can offer no more. He deserves no less.

Coach Rich is the past, present, and future of Michigan Football, Gary Moeller on the other hand is just the past.

Its also funny how some people see the present through rose colored glasses too.

Yea, Gary Moeller was great; three years as Illinois head coach were he finished in 9th place every year in the Big Ten when there were only ten teams in the Big Ten. Then 10 years as an assistant to Bo until he took Bos job, followed by six years of riding Bos coat tails were he got progressively worse every year of his six years as head coach at Michigan, until he was fired for being a drunk. It's strange how some see the past through roes glases.

Sad to hear. I always thought his Dad would've been a GREAT UM coach if things had played out differently for him.
