Game balls: Top honors to Al Borges, Vincent Smith and Michigan's defense

By Jim Knight

Game balls from the Michigan football team's 58-0 victory Saturday against Minnesota.

AL BORGES (4): It didn’t matter what the Michigan offensive coordinator called against Minnesota. Halfback passes. Quarterbacks Devin Gardner and Denard Robinson in the backfield at the same time. Simple running plays. Simple passes. Everything worked, and Michigan scored on its first six possessions and finished with 580 total yards and averaged 7.9 yards per play.

DENARD ROBINSON (3): The junior quarterback completed just 48.6 percent of his passes in Michigan’s first four games, leading to a week of questions and stories questioning his accuracy. For one game, he answered those questions. In a little more than a half day’s work, Robinson was 15-of-19 passing for 169 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran six times for 51 yards and a touchdown.

VINCENT SMITH (4): The running back didn’t touch the ball much, but he took advantage of his moments. Smith scored on a 4-yard run on Michigan’s first drive. He threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Drew Dileo on the first play of the second quarter. And he caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from Denard Robinson to give Michigan a 28-0 lead.

MICHIGAN DEFENSE (4): Michigan limited Minnesota to eight first downs and 177 total yards. A big difference this week for the Wolverines: Most of the statistical leaders weren’t from the secondary, but from the front line and linebackers. Defensive end Craig Roh tied for the team lead for Michigan with five tackles. Middle linebacker Kenny Demens had five. Defensive end Will Heininger had three. Defensive end Jibreel Black had three and a sack.

OK, you can have the only three footballs for Denard. He actually did everything that was asked. No turnovers by our offense. I was awestruck by some of the play calling by Al Borgess in the first half. They didn't let up after going up 28-0 in the second quarter. I am very excited about this team's potential. Let's take 'em one game at a time and this next one will be fun. GO BLUE!!!

best part of brady hoke's michigan wolverines, they are improving each week. offense defense and even special teams gaining experience and confidence. denard's footwork was better on this day. he gets his feet under him and steps into his throws a bit better this game. this team not only plays hard but they learn from mistakes. BO is SMILIING as he watches this TEAM!

Everything the fans (and coaches) wanted to see this week, we saw. Denard can pass! Gibbons can kick! The defense can pitch a shutout! Also, nice to see Gardner get some quality PT. I know this team still has a lot of improvement to make, especially with two straight tough road games coming up, but what I saw today gives me far more confidence moving into this difficult stretch.
