By Nick Baumgardner

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- All season long, Michigan football defensive coordinator Greg Mattison has been calling for his unit to perform like a true "Michigan defense."

On Saturday, he finally got what he wanted as the Wolverines held Illinois to 37 yards on the ground and 214 yards overall in a 31-14 win.

Mattison got emotional speaking about his defense's performance, while Michigan coach Brady Hoke praised the entire unit for its efforts.

At this point 9 weeks into the season, I think it's time to look back to where we fans were speculating about what Michigan's record would be at this point. The consensus seemed to be, before the season began, that Hoke & Co. could bring this team to at least an 8-4 season. Well - they now have those 8 wins, so it's appropriate to say: Good Job! This is indeed the Turnaround Year for the Wolverines. Anyone who doubts that has only to look back to the Season of Not Good Enough we were staggering through LAST November. Thank you, Dave Brandon, for making the right decision. Thank you, Brady Hoke, for restoring Michigan football to it's proper level. Thank you, Michigan Wolverines for all the work you've put in. Welcome back to The Victors.
