Is Michigan QB Devin Gardner switching to WR Roy Roundtree's old number? Video indicates so

By Kyle Meinke

Devin Gardner became a man of intrigue this spring, when it was learned the Michigan football team's backup quarterback was practicing at receiver.

Does that mean he's switching positions? At least on a part-time basis?

No one knows.

But it does appear he's at least switching numbers.

Gardner, who wore No. 7 last year, was seen wearing a No. 12 jersey in a video posted to the Wolverines' official website Saturday. The junior is shown with the quarterback group as Michigan players help with the Michigan Women's Football Academy, which drew 500 people and raised more than $128,000 for the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Gardner's locker also has switched to No. 12, according to a person who was in the locker room last week.

There was some speculation the former Inkster High School star would switch numbers after he changed his Twitter handle from @dGardner_7 to @dGardner_12 last month. He quickly changed it again, though, and now is going with @teamDGizzle.

Receiver Roy Roundtree wore No. 12 the past three years, but will sport the No. 21 next season. That jersey now is designated a "Michigan Football Legend" uniform in honor of Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard.

A Michigan spokesman said he could only confirm Roundtree's number switch.

Gardner would make a great (not a good) receiver. I hope he lines up there. He can still play QB when Denard is out, and if he beats out Bellomy next year.

The real question is will someone be wearing #1?

The change is not a shock. Bellomy the red shirt freshman qb from Texas by far was the best QB during the spring game (definitely not perfect) and was the only one that has the look of an NFL style qb. Gardner looked terrible during eth spring game.

Devin Gardner should be proud to wear #12, the jersey of some very good starting QB's since the 1960's - Ed Hood, Wally Gaber, Dennis Brown, Chris Zurbrugg, Scott Dreisback, and Drew Henson (first wore 12, then 7). MgoBlueForTim....hanging out with Michigan Man Ted.

I can wait for the real news once fall camp begins and Brady Hoke holds daily press conferences, but this is interesting.

This is old news for insiders. The switch happened a month ago.

#12 has historically been a QB's number.

to quote from above: Yet another inflammatory comment from Ted with absolutely no credible basis... simply trying to stir the pot yet again, it must be Monday.

Ted (aka) used to be Michigan's biggest fan, he thought and talked like all of us, real shame......

Number 21 appears to be the new Michigan uniform number 1. Roy had better be good this year. From what I saw of the spring practice, Devin is going to need much improvement in order to get more snaps. His best bet might be to try a receiver position. He hasn't lived up to expectations thus far.

Ted, so Shane Morris is what? A non skilled position player?...at QB?

Matt Patercsak

Mon, Jun 11, 2012 : 2:14 a.m.

if ted could have it his way, there would be 11 slot receivers that make up the offense on every down. 10 and a tight end on short yardage situation

And this is no surprise , as Hoke's 3 recruiting classes have shown , there has not been 1 elite skill position recruited .

#1 jersey prestige still exists - Braylon Edwards has a scholarship fund set up for it. It just so happens there hasn't been that elite of a player to take it since Braylon left.
