Is the 'Hokey Pokey' the right thing to stick in a Michigan football game?
By AnnArbor.com Staff
When new Michigan football coach Brady Hoke stopped by the Michigan-Ohio State basketball game on Wednesday, the “Hokey Pokey” song was played in Crisler Arena. A one-time thing? Or should the “Hokey Pokey” be part of the Michigan game-day experience?

BnT is absolutely correct..."Ted Boehm, OSU marching band member in 1935 and 1936, and considered an authority on Script Ohio, wrote that indeed, Michigan had performed the first Ohio in script" (link: http://library.osu.edu/projects/OSUvsMichigan/scriptohio.htm). That link is from the OHIO.edu website. I think it is fair to say though that OSU did it first from the formation they currently use.

The first script "Ohio" was performed by the UM marching band at OSU. Trying to rewrite history is for the weak minded and those easily led astray. It's actually in the OSU history of football, with thanks to UM for performing it.

They should play the Hulk Hogan theme song, instead. 'Cause, what you gonna do, brother, when Hokemania runs wild over you?

Bluefire: You are correct in your comment that tOSU, unlike UM, is a land-grant institution. Very clever tacitly working in the phrase, "working class" into your comment but denying it as demeanining. Frankly, I'm proud of the fact that tOSU is a land-grant school. I also have no shame in the fact that I work hard for a living. Point of interest: tOSU has two dorms, named Lincoln and Morrill, after the two individuals instrumental in establishing the land-grant system.

I think, initially, the Hokey Pokey would be fun. However, it'd get old, fast. (And I'm sure it's not as though Hoke's never heard this at games, or any of the other nicknames we've come up with so far. As someone with an "odd" last name myself, I never heard anything new after second grade.) And to clarify, yes, Michigan is a state, as in public, school, but NOT like MSU or OSU. MSU and OSU are land-grant universities, the founding purpose of which was to educate the working classes (not my words). Michigan is not a land-grant university. Those arguing with The OSU, You should ask him about Ohio State's national championship won in 1970, he can really tell the story well! I forget...who'd Ohio State beat in the Rose Bowl that year to win the Title? I recommend you all look it up, the 1971 Rose Bowl.; D Also, ask him about OSU's Title won in 1957. (If he omits the part where Auburn goes undefeated but is ineligible for Coaches Poll, defaulting the Title to 9-1 OSU, it's just to make the story more enthralling!) I remember when Vanilla Ice ripped off Queen's "Under Pressure" for his song "Ice, Ice, Baby," he called it wholly original, too. Sure sounds like someone around here I know. Go Blue

Richagain: Ouch! Such venomous comments! Apparently, I must have touched a raw nerve discussing the inherent superiority of tOSU's traditions. Yes, it is fun to read about the chaos of UM's FB program. After all, in Columbus nobody is discussing about playing a wedding polka during our games. However, in your anger, you erred and corrections need to be made. 1) "Script Ohio" was NOT invented by the UM Band. It is tradition and courtesy to salute the opposing team during pre-game. While it IS true that at one point the UM Band formed the word "Ohio" is cursive font. THAT IS NOT "SCRIPT OHIO." The incomparable "Script Ohio" starts as a block O and then UNWINDS to actually WRITE the word, "Ohio." The UM Band, is better than the average college band, but they lack the precision to perform the crossing maneuvers. While we always honor Michigan during pre-game when the game is in Columbus, we NEVER try to lay claim that the "Floating M" things is our invention. 2) You slammed tSOU as merely a "state" school. May I remind you, UM is also a public institution. I know many UM alums are quite elitist and act like Blue is part of the Ivy League. ("Harvard of the Midwest." How arrogant!) But reality is: Michigan is a state school, just like MSU and tOSU.

Osu The truth is you want to wear the so called "garbage" that's why your obsessed with Michigan and this site. UM is still far more superior than your state school. That's why your here -right? The script Ohio was invented by Michigan. So it will always be, OSU is the second school behind Blue I'm not sure why they're selling his clothes, but maybe you can buy them for an "end of era"

Just to set the record straight....I live in Virginia and YES the Virginia Tech Hokies do the Hokey Pokey during their games.....They also stand and shake their keys during "key" moments to make noise. The only thing I like about what they do is that they aren't sitting on their hands and they are making noise cheering for their team.

Blu-n-Tpa: "Another UM world record for Guiness: Largest group of people to do the same dance step at the same place and at the same time." Funny little traditions like this are usually done at the end of the 3rd quarter. With Michigan being behind, you'll only have 60,000 left in the stands. DVB: What on earth is "The Imperial March?" If you want something to stir your soul, try " Le Regimente" and Script Ohio.

From the vote, I conclude, Blue fans are serious, grumpy, stick-in-the-mud personalities. Kind of like Jeff Dunham's "Walter." By contrast, OSU games are not just loud, they're FUN. We cheer, we do "O - H - I - O," and of course we have "Hang on Sloopy," the OFFICIAL rock song of the State of Ohio. Of course, the fact our team WINS adds to the enjoyment. Another difference, if you never had the opportunity to visit Ohio Stadium, OSU fans actually sing the National Anthem.

the OSU. WOW! thanks for that. I loved the Wizard of Oz. No, we don't need gimmicks. No Hokey Pokey please. When Michigan football has stars - think here of Anthony Carter, Tom Brady, Desmond Howard, Elvis Grbac, Steve Hutchinson, Charles Woodson, Lamar Woodley, Mike Hart, Tyrone Wheatley, Chris Dreisbach, Anthony Thomas, Jamie Morris - OK, forget Howard and Brady - they don't dance and sing. They play football. Sure, I know, OSU has great football players too. In fact, I respect OSU football.

My sense is Hoke would put a stop to it pretty quickly. This program needs to return to a period of relative austere seriousness about things. That does not mean the players can't have fun on occasion. It does not mean Hoke has to be a hard-ass all the time. It means, as has been said several times here -- no more gimmicks.

"Wisconsin's 5th Quarter" is not a goal to which is to worth aspiring. No discipline. No precision. No skill. (Maybe that's what UM wants?) OSU's postgame is classic. After the alma mater with the FB team, the band takes the field. After the performance, they collapsing maneuver and do a "reverse" of their pre-game tunnel entrance. TBDBITL rules!

It's probably the msot annoying (and most played out) song of all time. I can't think of a worse choice, it's just idiotic. Like another reader said, enough with the gimmicks--just gimme some football. All the cliche songs completely destroy the game. I can't believe people haven't figured this out.
