Lloyd Carr to receive award for contributions to college football

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Former Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr will receive the Duffy Daugherty Memorial Award for outstanding contributions to college football on Thursday.

Carr retired in 2007 after leading the Wolverines to a 122-40 record, five Big Ten titles and a national championship in 13 seasons. Former Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler and athletic director Don Canham are among the previous winners of the award, which has been handed out annually since 1992.

Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel was the 2010 honoree.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. at Eagle Eye Golf Club in Bath. Dinner begins at 7 p.m. Rockford High School coach Ralph Munger is this year's high school award recipient.

The public is welcome but tickets, available for $50 each, are limited. Visit DuffyDaugherty.org or call 517-853-0670 for details.

He did. And he did it with class and grace. A rare thing in the world of high-pressure, big money college athletics.

Thank you Lloyd. Hope you can get a part in your buddy's (Russell Crowe) next movie that shows you as an aging hero along with your younger protege (Crowe) in an epic battle against the evil villain and his henchman (RR and Theo212). Go Blue!

Above all else, Lloyd Carr was a coach that any parent in america could trust to look after their young son. They new that while a member of the University of Michigan football team, their boy would be treated fairly, with due respect, and would be looked after and justly reprimanded when needed. In short, They trusted, with confidence, that their son would become a well respected and successful member of society. No matter where their career path led. Above all else.... Thank you Coach Carr

Hey. Did I ever tell you there's this one guy that I know at Dooleys bar in Ann Arbor? Well, he is also a pyschic and he told me that starting with the coach Carr induction, this year will be the greatest recovery in the history of college football. Mark my words......this guy knows his stuff. He was also MVP of the winter bowling league.

Golly, I sure am happy for Coach Carr. Hip hip hooray! I wish I could be smart like the rest of the fine authors on here and learn to support ALL of our coaches. I hope someone can point out my errors.

If you can't see the difference between support for a retired and long-time coach for Michigan who had great success ... and the lack of support for another coach who is not, was not and did not ... then there's nothing more I can say.

This just in: Theo has sold his Michigan football 7th place Big Ten ring in exchange for a tattoo of Rich Rodriguez on his rear. It is unclear if this is an NCAA violation. Probably not since Theo is not an active NCAA student athlete.

Congrats Coach Carr! I hope that Coach Hoke can live up to your standards and win this award some day as well! I hope that they don't treat this ceremony like the Masters and have the previous winner present the award.

Congrats to LC, a class act, for your contributions to the UM football program and to college football, and for your contributions in the lives of the young men you helped mold and shape. Theo ... very poor taste, and not "fun" or funny at all.

Congratulations, Coach Carr! Isn't it ironic that Tressell won it last year? What a fraud!

Coach Carr is well deserving of this or any award that reflects his dedication to the young men and women of the University of Michigan. His understated demeanor but competitive heart kept Michigan at or near the top of college football for most of the last 20 years. All Michigan fans should offer a sincere "well done, Coach Carr" for his committment to Michigan during the last 3 decades. Thank you Coach. This is MICHIGAN Go BLue!

Thanks for your effort, Coach. Also, as part of the ceremony, he will be awarded all the time-outs he didn't use (especially at the end of the 1st half) to keep in a mantle above his fireplace. Save the venom, the rest of you. Just having a little fun. This is supposed to be fun, am I not right? Deep breath, all of you...

Somewhere there's a village looking for you! You don't get to write something you know is ill timed and disrespectful but you want others to show you restraint. (How do you block posts from showing up on your screen?)

Well, good for him. I always like Lloyd Carr. I thought he was a quiet and classy kind of guy.
