LSU athletic director says Michigan has not contacted him about Les Miles

By AnnArbor.com Staff

While stories and rumors about Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez's job security continue, LSU athletic director Joe Alleva says Les Miles' name is not part of the conversation.

Miles, a former Michigan assistant coach and the LSU coach since 2005, would have to pay LSU a $1.25 million buyout if he leaves the program, according to NOLA.com.

"I don't know what's inside the head of the Michigan AD (Dave Brandon). I don't know what he has in mind. I'm sure he's got a plan, but I don't know if that includes Les Miles or not.

"Obviously he's an alumnus of Michigan and he's had a tremendous amount of success here at LSU. I don't know what Michigan has on their mind. We'll see shortly."

Miles is 61-16 in six season with one game to go. This season his team bounced back from a combined 17-9 record the two previous seasons to go 10-2, and was in the BCS championship hunt nearly the whole season.

@3 And Out. I agree with everything you say about Les. However, it is just my opinion that he burned too many bridges back in A2. Coupled with the ESPN Outside the Lines piece, I don't think we will ever see him back here. It is a shame because he is a good coach, a Michigan man, and he can recruit well. I wanted Michigan to hire him here the last time we were looking for a coach. This whole "process" has become a nightmare.

3 And Out "At the time, Miles says, he had not talked to Michigan officials about the job. But when LSU officials intensified negotiations to extend his contract after winning the SEC championship game, he told them he felt obligated to talk to Michigan. I spent hours trying to do that and never really got a return call until much later, Miles says. By then, Miles was preparing his team to play in the BCS title game against Ohio State and had agreed to a contract extension with LSU." 3 And Out, great stuff about Les Miles. It really shows how that situation was mishandled 3 years ago. Sounds like he would have come to UM if Martin had handled it correctly. Tater & Portage: "Miles is universally laughed at for his inability to manage the clock and his utterly illogical decision-making process." "Les Miles gets the cream of the crop recruiting, I think my German Shepherd could recruit at LSU..." Amazing how you guys rip men who are light years better than your guy RR. Now you're adding Les Miles to the list of people you rip, that now includes Bo, Moeller, LC, Tressel,... You guys are absolutely brilliant.

Brrrr Tater, it looks cold back there I hope it's not clouding judgment. Les Miles gets the cream of the crop recruiting, I think my German Shepherd could recruit at LSU. I think he is a good coach but not great. I think he's located in a treasure chest of recruits down there. I think Les knows that without those great, great recruits he gets in their backyard that at Mich. he might not be as successful. When Bo came to Mich in 1969(has it been almost 42 years) the concept of win, win, and more wins and I mean right now wasn't as pressurized as it is right now nor were coaches made instantly rich. Didn't Bo start out around 80 + thousand dollars? Now I know you have to take into consideration inflation but come on this is getting ridiculous and I think as long as some of the fickle fans ( win now at all cost, do or die) have that attitude with no patience we are going to pay and I mean more than that job description is worth just to appease an obsession. Is RR still our coach?

tater...you continue to spin your myths, untruths and hatred for anyone other than RR. That is pretty sick. BTW, Moeller's wife is over 15 years older than Les Miles, who was dating his own current wife while he was here in AA and eventually married her. She was a UM womens bb coach...so yeah, keep spinning your nasty untruths. Your boy will soon be gone tater.

Hire first. Ask permission later. Michigan needs a proven winner, a strong personality who can handle the pressure, and a great recruiter to get through this mess and stop the bleeding. Les qualifies on all levels. No more mamby-pamby raise me up. That wont cut it. Unknown assistants wont cut it. Big time hire needed.

And what about the other potential candidates and their current AD's?

Quotes from a Les Miles profile earlier this year: Miles remained at Michigan through the transition from Schembechler to Gary Moeller, but when Moeller resigned in 1995, Miles left to become offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State. Even though it was a promotion, he had a hard time leaving. I cried like a baby, Miles says. Thats how much I enjoyed that place. Twelve years later, during LSUs national championship season, rumors circulated that Miles would return to Michigan as head coach. Just hours before LSU played in the SEC championship game, Miles held a legendary impromptu press conference to deny a report by ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit that he was set to leave for the Wolverines. At the time, Miles says, he had not talked to Michigan officials about the job. But when LSU officials intensified negotiations to extend his contract after winning the SEC championship game, he told them he felt obligated to talk to Michigan. I spent hours trying to do that and never really got a return call until much later, Miles says. By then, Miles was preparing his team to play in the BCS title game against Ohio State and had agreed to a contract extension with LSU. I dont know that its in the cards, Miles says of a return to Michigan. Not every Michigan alumnus gets the opportunity to go back and coach at his alma mater.

With Harbs reportedly taking the 49ers job... Les is the best option for Michigan to move forward. He has been a successful coach on the biggest stage in college football, has lead 2 successful programs, is flat out an excellent recruiter and has a history of hiring a great staff. He loves Michigan and would be here in a heartbeat...plus he and Bo were close. IMO Les is what this program needs to heal the wounds, build the talent level back up again and become Michigan again.
