Meandering through the maize (and blue): At least one writer wants to see the coaches' poll go away

By Michael Rothstein

At least one writer wants to see the coaches poll eliminated from the Bowl Championship Series discussion.

John Henderson, a columnist for the Denver Post, writes from Texas about Bob Stoops' decision to vote in this year's coaches' poll - part of the way college football decides who plays in the national championship game.

He's doing it to give the Sooners a say. This doesn't sit well with Henderson, even though it's how it's gone seemingly forever in college football. And Michigan coach Lloyd Carr explained on Friday that the coaches are not going to give up that power lightly.

FOOTBALL:

  • Shavodrick Beaver almost came to Michigan as a quarterback. Instead, he chose Tulsa. His story, told by Eric Bailey of the Tulsa World, is pretty darned interesting anyway.
  • LaMarr Woodley, a former Michigan standout at linebacker, won a Super Bowl with Pittsburgh in February. And his last sack - on Kurt Warner in said Super Bowl - was the best. Now, he's trying to become one of the best defenders in the NFL, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes.
  • Andy Reid of the Michigan Daily writes about Michigan's quarterback situation.
  • MGoBlog breaks down the Connecticut game in 2010 and why it isn't totally horrible for Michigan.
  • Rejoice! It's Tom Brady's birthday. The Michigan quarterback turned Patriots icon was on the radio early this morning when his parents called in from California to sing to him. Oh, he's also healthy and playing football again in New England, writes Ian R. Rapoport in the Boston Herald's blog: The Rap Sheet.

I like the QB story; it agrees with three things I have been saying since spring: Forcier is ready, it would be nice to see D Rob get 10-15 plays a game as a change of pace QB, and Sheridan would best serve UM by helping coach the young guys and getting on the fast track toward GA. I wish he would have called Sheridan a "human victory cigar," and I would have liked the story even more.
