Michigan a place 'to start over' for football recruit Demar Dorsey

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Football recruit Demar Dorsey says playing at Michigan offers him a chance to get away from his past, which includes three arrests for burglaries, The Detroit Free Press reports.

“My goal right now is to show everybody I’m not that person who I was a couple years back then, hanging with the wrong crowd and stuff like that, showing that I’m more focused,” Dorsey told the Free Press. “I’m focused. I’m ready to move on with my life to bigger and better things. I feel like (Michigan is a great place for me, where I can start all over and make something out of nothing, make nothing into something.

Dorsey twice was sent to alternative programs for juveniles and Florida assistant state attorney Maria Schneider said Dorsey twice was given breaks in his juvenile cases, the Free Press reported.

“All cases are individuals. We are dealing with kids,” she said. “The vast majority of kids stop offending. I hope this is one of them. But if he’s not, we’ll find out soon enough.”

Dorsey will have his COUSIN on the team and on campus to watch over him (DR). Dorsey is already going to be on a tight leash since he has all of this negative attention and I highly doubt he would do something that could jeopardize his future. GO BLUE

This guy has done nothing for me to think negative about him, i know that he had some problems in the past. but i've heard people actually complain because of this kids hair and "grill" who cares! give the kid a chance. He has D Rob to mentor him and put him on the right path. From what i've seen with the kid i LOVE his attitude and swagger.

Of all who are out there casting negative comments on this young man, how many of you do not have checkered pasts? I'm willing to bet none of you! I had problems as a youth, hanging with the wrong crowd and someone (much like RR) gave me a chance to do something with myself. I'm happy to report that I ended up pulling myself up and am now a success. This is a kid who was ACCUSED and then found INNOCENT! Take a good look in the mirror and tell me just how perfect you are...hypocrites!!!!! Demar: Keep your head up and take full advantage of the tremendous opportunity before you. I sure hope you help bring my beloved Wolverines back to the promised land, but more than that I hope you prove all these blood thirsty hypocrites wrong by evolving into a productive citizen and solid man. I'm on your side; best of luck young man.

Yelmonian, you are absolutely right about the Detroit Media. They are harder on MSU than UofM and it's just now hitting us in the face. There are too many posters here that waver on the borderline of insanity and throw stones from glass houses and now the chickens are coming home to roost. I believe that we have the right coach to embarrass us for the next decade.

BlueMarker, I understand your frustrations with Drew Sharp, but Drew cuts both ways. As an Alum of MSU living in the NW, I went ballistic hearing Drew being interviewed by a local radio host... and Drew telling the host that the MSU basketball team did not have what it takes to win in the tournament. They went to the final four that year. And I would almost feel comfortable in saying, the Detroit Media in general is harder on MSU. Rob Parker was more than willing to call out MSU's QB by name for a crime on national radio... only to find out he had bad information. It works both ways. Again, I'll stick with my point... give the kid a chance. If he keeps his nose clean, great, you get to tell say I told you so to the Freep. I personally would like to see UM good again, so that MSU/UM games are meaningful.

Yelmonian, I did not know that information when I posted. However, I still feel there is a double standard when the Freep covers UM vs. MSU. Why wasn't Drew Sharp forcing the issue with Dantonio when he decided to give Glenn Winston a second chance? It was barely a blip on the radar screen. The question asked in the presser was a reasonable one but all the follow up (which bordered on harassment) was uncalled for. Furthermore, Sharp's comments on the radio have been even worse. Is Michigan taking a chance on a kid because they need help? You bet! Is it getting blow completely out of proportion because it's Michigan? You better believe it!

Different comments concerning UM Dorsey recruit and SI article" "Should college atheletes be paid". When a scholarship is given it is for tution, books and room and board. It does not include spending money. Unless parents can supply some money some kids will do anything to have things other students have. The NCAA will not allow an athelete to have a part time job during the school year. So either pay them or they will find a way to get money. Just like a 17 year old says he just went out in the morning to make some money

Im glad Dorsey chose UM to escape the troubles in Tennessee, Florida, and California. I think it is a real smart choice too cuz Ann Arbor is not known for having bad areas like where the other Universities tryn to recruit him have. And i am very pleased on how RR is defending his players. I knew b4 RR is a very classy guy its jus hard to stay classy when u get ragged on constantly. this shows u that Dorsey will make plays and will try to change his life around. I have a feeling all these recruits will play their hearts out for RR cuz he does care bout them and does defend them. This is proof. GO BLUE!!!

Demar should be glad that he did not commit a juvenile offense(s) in Washtenaw County. No matter what his football promises are. He would have suffered the same fate of many young Black males who commit juvenile offenses in Washtenaw County. Preparation for enrollment in the adult system where there's big money involved.

We was right down here going to my house. We dropped one of our players off, one of our teammates off. When we were dropping them off, they got out the car, tried to rob somebody. I was still in the car....and this, I got their trust back and stuff like that, and ever since then, Ive just been clean, I aint been doing nothing."...Words escape me; you just can't make this stuff up. I'll just leave it at, I'm kind of guessing not a pre-med scholar-athlete. Rich-Rod is sure making us all proud

Coach Rodriguez should be commended for taking a kid from a bad area who has been exposed to bad things and giving him a chance. This shows how much he cares and I wish the media would layoff trying to make this guy look bad. Yes, two losing seasons in a row doesn't help but its time for the Detroit media to stop with their personal agenda to destroy him. Go blue...I'm all in!

Blue marker, Sharp has bashed Dantonio on air for his second chances..For not being harsh enough with the punishments to those invloved in the assults. He called him out on Jennette, Winston, and Austin White's brother. Demar was guilty and since I have a daughter who went through the diversion program I know that it keeps your record clean, but you accept guilt and responsibility for your actions. I truly hope that Demar has learned his lesson and is able to avoid problems from here on out.

Blue Marker, I beg to differ. The young man did admit to being involved. He was guilty. Because he was a kid, and because he was a star football player, the prosecutors didn't want to screw up his chances, and he was put in a "diversionary" program. He is guilty, as he has admitted. He was routed on a different path so he could never have a chance to be convicted. It's a program they have for juvenile offenders in Florida. If you don't believe it, read the 8 page article on the Freep website with quotes from the prosecutor. So the difference is, this guy got preferencial treatment because he is a football player... and the case you referenced... the football players are being convicted. And... for a point of reference... I believe this kid should get the second chance just like the other players you reference. Now... if they screw up a second time, they should be booted.

WOW! This is great! I applaud Rich Rodriguez for giving a kid a second chance! Now if only other schools would do the same, this world would be a better place! Comments laced with sarcasm for all of the individuals taking shots at other schools previously. Now people are upset that the FREEP would actually report something like this about a poor kid... Geeshhh.

Lets see how long he lasts before he gets into trouble in Ann Arbor. Having worked with Juvenile Delinquents, nothing I see, his body language etc, does not inspire confidence. A guy with a criminal background like his would never have been recruited by Bo or Moeller or Carr.

Does the term "not guilty" mean anything to you people? The young man was found innocent in a U.S. court of law. This carries no weight? To give you an example of the opposite Glenn Winston was found GUILTY and served time in jail...and was then playing football for MSU. Where was Drew Sharp then? Why wasn't he badgering Dantonio at a press conference? You know why? Because there is a clear double standard at the Freep. Snyder, Rosenberg and Sharp can all rot for all I care. Please guys don't let facts stand in the way of a good story.

I am just hopeful that Demar makes the most out of the opportunity that is presented to him. I would also hope that fellow michigan fans will stop being so sensitive to any reporter who reports on stories they view as "negative". All the posters who claimed he did nothing wrong have now all had to read that he Wasn't a model citizen at the wrong place. He was involved and hopefully going through the diversion programs has totally changed him as a young man. I pray for Demar to succeed as a man.

Every one deserves a second chance, but with the way the program has been the last couple of years is this just another RR screw up like changing the entire program and trying to run it with players who weren't recruited for it. Mallet seemed to do just fine at Ark.,RR could have won games using players and the old program and work his game plan in. When is he going to stop pushing changes and marginal players down our throats and having his way backfire. When are all schools including MSU realize the old Prop 48 was a good thing. Let a recruit come here for a year and prove they have changed and want a quality education a play on a national level. If they don't want to do that then stay home and realize what kind of chance they have. I'm tired of our schools being a proving ground

I think it is great the U is giving him a chance. Just wait a year or two, you all will see why we recruited him!

Does annarbor.com really think it's ethical to put the incident report on the web, including the crime victim's full name, home address, and home telephone number? Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should do it.

You would think that with all the kids out there that work hard and be an asset to U of M that they wouldn't need to be importing out of state criminals to play football.

Is it ethical for them to be publishing what appear to be sealed juveline records? Seems like they are using a kid as a pawn in their attempt to increase circulation through scandalmongering.
