Michigan center David Molk among candidates for Rimington Trophy

By Kyle Meinke

Michigan senior David Molk is among 43 players named to the Rimington Trophy watch list Wednesday afternoon.

Molk was a finalist last year for the award, which goes to the nation’s best center.

The nomination comes a day after Molk was named to the watch list for the Rotary Lombardi Award (best down lineman) with Michigan defensive tackle Mike Martin.

The 6-foot-2, 288-pounder from Lemont, Ill., was named first-team All-Big Ten last season by the coaches, and was a second-team selection by the media.

He started every game after battling an injury in 2009.

Six players from the Big Ten are candidates for the Rimington: Mike Brewster (Ohio State), Ben Burkett (Northwestern), Mike Caputo (Nebraska), James Ferentz (Iowa), Peter Konz (Wisconsin) and Molk.

Only the SEC (seven players) features more players on the list.

Western Michigan’s Kevin Galeher also is a candidate for the award. Michigan opens the season Sept. 3 against the Broncos.

81wolverine....Unfortunately, I don't see Molk winning the R award. I 'd just like to see him get first team ALL Big Ten. I think, in many ways, Molk is a key to this season. We need him to stay healthy out there. If he makes All American, he's had a great year....and more importantly, Michigan has had a great year!

It would be great if Molk could win this award. To my knowledge, although a number of Michigan players have been named as candidates over the years, we've not had any winners. Time to change that!

David Baas won it in '04.

I think Molk has a great chance for that award this year, he's had a solid career and will play on Sundays for sure. The better he does the better the team will be! On an off topic note, this is a PSA for.....hey, whatshisname, whatshisname, OMG, OMG, OMG......this Saturday at the palace is, wait for it, wait for it.......YES, it's Josh Groban, OMG, OMG, OMG. Hurry up and get tickets, so bummed I'm gonna miss it.

You know, preseason accolades are nice and all, but really, they don't count for squat. Seems like every other day there's an article about this guy or that has been nominated for a trophy that doesn't get awarded until the season is done, and we haven't even had fall camp yet, let alone any actual games. Hopefully David Molk is reading these comments, and here's what I have to say to Mr. Molk: Prove 'em right. Win the focking award. It all starts with you, brother. YOU are the center of the action, and you can make or break the offensive production of our beloved Wolverine football team. Make us proud David....we are behind you 100%. Win the focking award!!!!
