Football recruit Raymon Taylor says Michigan is his 'dream school'

By Pete Cunningham

The college coaching carousel has certainly made the last couple weeks a whirlwind for Highland Park senior Raymon Taylor. Originally committed to Indiana, Taylor re-opened his recruitment when Hoosiers coach Bill Lynch had “former” added to his title.

Former Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez and his staff offered Taylor a scholarship, relatively late in the game, in December.

Despite growing up a Wolverines fan, the uncertainty surrounding the coaching situation made Taylor hesitant to make a decision at the time. That hesitation proved to be justified. But after meeting with new coach Brady Hoke less than a week ago, Taylor committed to Michigan.

"Michigan has always been my dream school, but I wanted to see how the coaching staff was, and what was best for me and my family,” said Taylor, who grew up idolizing former Wolverines receiver Braylon Edwards.

Taylor was Mr. Everything for Highland Park as a senior. He played wide receiver, returned punts and kicks and filled in at tailback when the Polar Bears' starter was injured. He was recruited as a defensive back, where he was a first team Division 3-4 All-State selection.

Highland Park coach Cedric Dertch said he could tell the minute Taylor stepped onto the field that cornerback was his natural position.

“Automatically, even as a freshman you could tell he had a special athleticism," Dertch said. "Then, the past couple of years, he’s put the work in.”

Highland Park is a place where Taylor never had to look hard for motivation to work harder. Taylor said being in a community rampant with crime and poverty made him strive for more.

“My dad and uncle always say, ‘You gotta get out the 'hood’…Some guys on the street come up and they’ll put their arm around you and say, ‘Don’t do what I did.’ I just always looked at it like I don’t want to be one of those guys on the street,” Taylor said.

Taylor wouldn’t mind being like one his good friends from back home on the field, however: Michigan State running back Edwin Baker, who led the Spartans in rushing last year with 1,201 yards.

Baker and Taylor were good friends growing up in Highland Park and they still talk a bit and text back and forth.

The 5-foot-11 Taylor says he’s bulked up to 180 pounds from around 170 this summer. That's still about 30 pounds lighter than Baker, but Taylor says he’d still welcome the opportunity to square off with him on the field.

Their fathers, Taylor said, would love it even more.

“His dad and my dad would be going at it,” Taylor said. “Talking all sort of stuff.”

Lot's of anger here I thought you kids were all through talking about RR. Oh I see you guys can bad mouth RR even after he's gone but RR's fans can't discuss him well sounds rational to me coming from you kids. To think you are the same boys and girls that are singing Brady Hokes praises good god, we might be in trouble after all. No, we're okay heck we just stole one from Indiana, bring on Alabama on second thought better make that App. state.

GettingBluer That's just his way of pulling our strings. Let him go on about how "misguided" us young folks are. I don't even know what player he's referring to but I'm sure he's "right" and we're "not as right". But on the bright side, did you hear Michigan has a new football COACH and he understands that there's this thing called DEFENSE! Wow, after the last 3 years, WHO KNEW? TiM Go Blue!

So, how'd your genius do against Toledo? App. St was three-peating national championship team.

81...it is very obvious why TWCiUMH didn't make a serious offer to this player earlier. He plays on the WRONG side of the ball for the liar/cheater/loser!!! TiM Go Blue!!!

Congratulations go out to Brady Hoke. Without coaching one game at UM, he has already equalled TWCIUMH's record against our biggest rivals. Looking forward to huge improvements on the field this coming season, and a football team we can all be proud of...win or lose.

Coach Hoke seems to be incorporating something called defense too.. shown by all the defensive recruits committing and dropping recruitment on WR like flowers.. we already have enough receivers as it is.. something like 10 on scholarship.. This kid Taylor will be a PRO level defensive back!

I'm not sure why Rodriguez didn't offer this kid a lot sooner. He appears to be an excellent player and person. Oh well. It worked out in the end for all concerned. Welcome to Michigan Mr. Taylor!

As I'm sure Raymon already knows, and probably why he wanted to be a part of Michigan football, is that coach Hoke is also employing another strategy not employed by the previous coach. It's called WINNING. I would say to ask if he has further questions, but it appears coach Hoke and his staff already answered them for...which is why chose to become a Wolverine. It's good to have him aboard and GO BLUE!!!

Raymon, Welcome. But please don't plan on being in on any offensive snaps. You see, Coach Hoke is employing a new strategy which will allow us to never be compared with those mean SEC schools: punting on first down. And, to change things up sometimes, he will have our punt returner: 1) make a fair catch, and 2) free-kick punt the ball right back to the other team. It's the safest way, and there is no other way if you think about it like a true fan. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. Sincerely, Theo (President)
