Michigan football picks up verbal commitments from Raymon Taylor, Keith Heitzman and Matt Wile

By AnnArbor.com Staff

While Brady Hoke and the Michigan football staff work to retain the recruiting class secured by former coach Rich Rodriguez and his assistants, they've also been able to pick up some talent of their own.

Reports indicate the 2011 recruiting class grew by three this weekend with the addition of four-star athlete Raymon Taylor of Highland Park High School, three-star defensive end Keith Heitzman of Hilliard (Ohio) Davidson and kicker Matt Wile from San Diego Francis Parker.

Michigan quarterbacks Denard Robinson and Devin Gardner, along with safety Cameron Gordon, hosted Taylor on an official visit and helped convince him to commit to the Wolverines, the Detroit News reported on Saturday.

Originally committed to Indiana, Taylor opened his recruitment after coach Bill Lynch was fired. He is expected to play defensive back at Michigan.

Likewise, Heitzman decommitted from Vanderbilt to join the Michigan recruiting class. He opened his recruitment after coach Robbie Caldwell was fired.

The three-star Rivals recruit was swayed to return to Big Ten land by new Michigan defensive coordinator Greg Mattison. ESPN.com's evaluation says he "possesses solid size for a high school defensive end and should be able to add more good bulk as he physically develops and gets into a college weight program."

The Wolverine reported Saturday night that Wile - recruited by Hoke and his staff while they were at San Diego State - chose Michigan over the Aztecs, Washington and Air Force. He was expected to pick up an offer from Nebraska, as well, but canceled his visit after committing to the Wolverines.

Michigan's kicking woes were well-documented last season. Brendan Gibbons and Seth Broekhuizen combined to make 4 of 14 field goal attempts.

Ranked the 44th-best kicker in the nation by ESPN, Wile was selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

I love S. Hopkins. Runs hard but that's not my point. The WCiMFH was running the clock out on himself. Sure DRob ran, but with 7-8 guys dropping back in "prevent" the RBs and he had a little more room to run. Let's face facts. If the ground game was that productive all the time we wouldn't have lost all those games by so many points. Everybody needs to get better. If you are staying the same, you're losing. TiM Go Blue

Alternate theories / rumors about Dee Hart: * Hart was going to come to UM, but then the Carr-tel stepped in and messed things up. * Hart thought the cupboard was still too bare from after the 2007 season and decided to go to Bama. * Hart was angry that the "haters" on aa.com and other sites wanted RR gone. * Hart was angry because RR promised all of his UM gear to the Salvation Army and not to him.

Dee Hart is taking correspondence classes in Alabama but will leave there before spring practice, take incompletes in all his classes, and be in Ann Arbor before Saban knows he's gone. OR NOT. (Is this what it's like to just make stuff up and post it. Whoa, what power! I like it!) TiM Go Blue

Dusty, I would say the O-Line does need some new "beef" when you look at the production by running back. Also in some of those games: Iowa, MSU, Wis, and OSU, the opposing team was quite happy to let Michigan run up the yardage in the second half. Like running the clock out on yourself, which appeared to be a new twist by the WCiMFH. So how did the O-Line do in the Gator Bowl? 88 yards. With the exception of QB (DRob), there isn't one part of last season's Michigan team that doesn't need to add new talent. That's not to say those guys already here can't play. I firmly believe this COACHING staff will turn some of those players into great Michigan football players. I also want to believe that those players want that too. So go get us some more Wolverines, coaches, big, fast, tough, smart, and want to be at Michigan. TiM Go Blue!

Uh, what? You think Denard somehow teleported past the front 7 of the defense? The offensive line blocked for him. To say that somehow doesn't count because the running backs didn't have a crazy-good year is ridiculous. Oh, and the top 3 running backs, Shaw, Smith, and Hopkins, rushed for 1,154 yards, with a 4.7/carry average. Considering they were all working through injuries over the course of the season, they are all underclassmen (a true freshman in Hopkins' case), and they STILL had an average/rush that rivals Mike Hart's rushing average though his junior year (4.8), I'd say your assessment that the o line needs more beef based on the production of the running backs is , to put it lightly: off base.

Mon, Jan 24, 2011 : 3:43 a.m.

Thanks Dusky, I wasn't aware that Dee Hart was now enrolled at Alabama. I am sorry you had to answer that 15 times since he enrolled as of what , a few days ago? Sorry it upset you so much. As for Beefing up the O AND D lines, we don't have enough depth and Every Year it is imperative to bring in New Blood and get them ready for battling in the Trenches with the Big Boys. You don't agree? Fine, I'll bet the Coaching staff does and will do what they can to get the right personal in place to fit their offensive system. I like fast players on the line but you gotta be able to push ahead to get or stop the goal-line play on either side of the ball and in the Big Ten, you gotta have beef and back-ups ready when a guy goes down or even just for a breather. Just sayin'.

Dusty

Mon, Jan 24, 2011 : 6:47 a.m.

You never have enough depth on your lines. There isn't an offseason that goes by that you don't recruit those positions heavily. That's a given every single year. But to say we should do it right now because we have some sort of deficiency is just plain inaccurate. The defensive line was by far the best unit on our defense this year (and I realize that's not saying much, but the kids deserve credit), and the offensive line was outstanding, regardless of what some people would have you think with their blanket (and bogus) statements about not being able to run against "decent" defenses. We ran the ball just fine, thank you very much.

Jim Nazium

Mon, Jan 24, 2011 : 2:12 a.m.

I like the Recruits, some of them look like they have decent speed and a nose for the ball. I hope they can get some beef for the O and D lines as well. Maybe D Hart will have a change of Heart? Time will tell. As far as inevitable struggles against the tougher teams next year, I think the fans will be more forgiving as long as Coach Hoke is straight forward and not sounding like a politician. I think he'll be fine especially with a far more united fan-base, so it's all good. I like what I'm seeing so far.

Dusty

Mon, Jan 24, 2011 : 8:42 p.m.

Oh, and the "And many of these yards came in the second half, after the game was out of control, when it was garbage time." is hilarious. You're literally guessing at that, because I'm going to tell you something that will blow your mind: More than 75% of those rushing yards came in the first halves of those games. Besides, how much did Michigan rush the ball in the second halves when they were down by 14-21? Seriously, who accumulates rushing yards in "garbage time"?

Dusty

Mon, Jan 24, 2011 : 8:39 p.m.

So because Michigan ran for 300 yards against cupcakes, somehow 180 against a great run defense is crap? To quote you: "my, my, my" Do I even need to pull up the average rushing yards each of those defenses gave up over the course of the year and how much higher Michigan's rushing total was than those averages? Twisting math to match your argument is fun, isn't it?

Edward R Murrow's Ghost

Mon, Jan 24, 2011 : 12:29 p.m.

Try these stats on for size: MSU 1 Rushing TD -76 yards under season average Iowa 1 Rusing TD -51 yards Ill 2 Rushing TD (In regulation) +19 yards (2OT) Wisk 2 Rushing TD -70 yards OSU 1Rushing TD -56 yards And many of these yards came in the second half, after the game was out of control, when it was garbage time. This team could get 20 yards when it didn't need it but couldn't get one yard when it did. If it wasn't the O-line, it must have been the coaching genius on the sidelines. Good Night and Good Luck

TulsaTom Campbell will definitely switch back to defensive line. Just as I said during the last season when this fiasco happened, as soon as the new coach came in, Campbell would go back to where he belongs, which is wreaking havoc next to Martin on the D Line in a 4-3. I can't believe Hille is ranked as only the 44th best kicker in the country (ESPN). In actuality, rankings of high school kickers mean almost nothing. Kicking off tees in H.S. in front of paltry crowds is a completely different game than in front of huge, loud college crowds on televised games. I think you need to look far deeper to find a good kicker. I like everything I've read about Hille including the fact he has had a big-time kicking coach for several years and has been practicing off the ground since 10th grade. Also, he's an extremely hard worker and an excellent student. Gibbons (our currrent kicker) on the other hand, had a much higher "national rank" in H.S. and he can't even hit a 30 yarder. So, bottom line is I think Michigan got their man in Hille. Welcome to Michigan!

This talk of recruiting brings up a question -- did Michigan take any hits with respect to scholarships available after the NCAA found violations at Michigan? I think I recall some discussion of reduced practice time. But I can't recall if the NCAA dinged M on number of scholarships. Also, February 2nd is national signing day. Does that mean there can't be any signing after that day? I seem to recall last year the #1 overall -- an OT out of Minnesota -- going unsigned after the date and eventually (I think) ending up with USC.

Dusty

no scholorships deducted. 130 hours of practice time taken away over the next 2 seasons (self imposed). And if you've ever played organized athletics, you know what is considered "practice" is so hazy that there won't be any problems putting work in to help make up for those "lost" hours.

On a separate note, if they can't get some good defensive linemen recruits this year I wonder if Hoke and Mattison will ask Will Campbell to go back on the defensive line again and try to motivate him to live up to his potential. That was one of my biggest frustrations last year was seeing the coaching staff switch Campbell from defense to offense at a time when defensive line help was needed so badly. It just didn't make sense to me although I am just a fan. .

Good work on the recruiting trail so far. Since there are a lot of scholarships left, I'd like to see U-M get a few more talented defensive backs as well as some defensive linemen and linebackers who won't get manhandled by the stronger offenseive lines in the league. Also, let's get a quality QB to replace Tate. At the rate they're going, there are making up for lost time pretty well so far.

Mr. Aztec, Wile did not make a prior commitment to SDSU, and according to rivals he visited Air Force on 1/14 and also hosted 2 Nebraska coaches this past week before his visit to UM. Sounds like the guy was very much in play. I guess it would be ok for him to sign with Air Force or Nebraska, but not UM ? If he had made a solid commitment to SDSU you might have a point, especially while BH was there, but he did not. I am not sure how you can say that BH did anything wrong.

@Mr. Aztec First, Coach Hoke was waaay up front with SDSU and the AD about where Michigan stood in his career path. Second Mr. Wile was still considering AF Academy, Washingto and SDS, so Coach Hoke's not "stealing" anybody. Also, your coaching staff has had major changes in it and thus recruits have the right to adjust their thinking accordingly. Don't you have the right to work where you want? Michigan needs to improve it's kicking game. Mr Wile was unsigned, and still is, just like everybody else until 2/2/2011. If you need to blame anything, blame the system. Good luck to your school and your football team. Be thankful that Coach Hoke did what he was paid to do while at SDSU and hope that he set the foundation for future success there. TiM. Go Blue!

After Coach Hoke was hired and following his PC and seeing his enthusiasm for Michigan I thought he would bring in like-minded coaches and players. Well, no one can complain about how BH as put his staff together and now is doing the same for players. The key is to plug the holes you know about and get the players that exhibit the traits you want for the TEAM. Toughness. Desire. Heart. Ability. I have seen nothing that leads me to question the success of Coach Hoke this recruiting season. Several posters had questioned me when I stated that Michigan could still break into the Top 25 for recruiting in 2011. One person told me I was "drinking the Kool-aid" and another pointed out Michigan wasn't even ranked in the top 50. As of this morning, Michigan was listed as Number 36. @Dwayne I seriously doubt that 1stD (formerly 3&O) would EVER relent in his support for Michigan. You have to be passionate about something to put the amount of effort !stD has put forth. If you agree or disagree with him, it is his right to present his well defended side of the discussion. And, as time as now shown, he was right on the money with what needed to happen, which was DB removing the WCiMFH from Bo Hall. I relatively new here but I didn't see your "name" around that much near the end of last season. I think any honest overview of Michigan's last three games could lead to only one answer. What would you have done after the Gator Bowl? Right now our Coach is BH. I love his style and our new coaching staff. THIS IS MICHIGAN! Go Blue! (That's for #58, Go Blue is not going anywhere.)

So, if I were to create a screen name now, that indicated how unsuccessful this program was going to be with this horrible hire (which I don't believe), I would be showing unrelenting support? Please. What would I have done? The same that I would do for Hoke? You hire a guy, you give him the opportunity to be successful. Whether I like Hoke or not, I will support him, he's the coach and the decision to bring him in was made by someone not sitting on their couch, commenting on a web site. No, what frustrates me about all of you anti-Michigan turned pro-Hoke, is your inconsistency. If Hoke goes 5-7 this year, we'll hear all of these excuses about how the cupboard was bare or RRs recruits or whatever. Let me guess, you want the stickers back, too. You didn't see me at the end of last year? Of course, not. Who wants to come on here with all of you celebrating each loss? Sorry you lost your coach, I think he's a good one. I'd be uncomfortable with taking your recruits but I do think that some of them are more interested in the coach than the school. Not to mention that I don't think he had committed. Also, I don't think this parallels what RichRod did with Terrelle Pryor - informing him before anyone else that he was headed for Michigan. That seemed a bit wrong.

azwolverine

Sun, Jan 23, 2011 : 9:08 p.m.

Wile never committed to SDSU or anyone, to my knowledge. He was still being actively recruited by several schools. So, while I understand your frustration, I don't know which school Wile was 'stolen' from since he hadn't made any commitment to anyone yet. The fact that he committed to Michigan immediately after visiting shows that perhaps he hadn't been overwhelmed by any of the schools he was considering and finally was when he came to UM.

Mick52

Sun, Jan 23, 2011 : 8 p.m.

Didn't RR get criticized for that by Purdue? I don't have a problem with it, I imagine it happens a lot, especially with coaching changes. What I am wondering is if these are players that can be developed into very good players that will elevate the team to winning of are they players better suited for the lesser conferences.

GettingBluer

Sun, Jan 23, 2011 : 6:55 p.m.

To *some* recruits, the coach is the most important thing, not the school. Would you have felt the same way if RR had a HC job this season and Denard chose to follow him? I don't have a problem with it for Hoke or Rodriguez, if it goes for or against UofM. After all, even the NCAA allows commits to de-commit when there is a coaching change and some of Hoke's recruits are coming in via this route due to OTHER coaching changes (other colleges). This one just happens to involve Hoke changing jobs.

81wolverine

Sun, Jan 23, 2011 : 6:51 p.m.

Stealing recruits? C'mon. Whether you or I like it or not, kids are being recruited up until they sign the papers. Michigan "loses" players like that all the time, and so do most other programs. As long as a school does not use negative recruiting and only talks about their program, all is fair and within the rules. Welcome to big-time college football.

heartbreakM

Sun, Jan 23, 2011 : 1:49 p.m.

Mr. Aztec: I can't disagree with you. I feel like if a coach has been recruiting for a school before switching, he should at least not poach. Similar to my feelings with former coach and his phone calls to Pryor. But in Hoke's defense, he did not seem to do it before informing the world or his own team. But I agree, it is problematic and poor form.

DonAZ

Sun, Jan 23, 2011 : 1:26 p.m.

I think "stealing recruits" might be a bit harsh. Had wile already committed to SDSU? Or was he merely "considering" SDSU, along with Washington and Air Force? Is it possible that Wile was leaning towards SDSU because of Hoke, and with Hoke moving on to Michigan it gave Wile the opportunity to "follow the coach" to a program with far, far more name recognition than SDSU? Also, do we know who initiated the conversation about Wile to Michigan? Is it possible that Wile reached out to Hoke and said, "Hey coach ... I know you've got kicker problems there at Michigan? I've not yet announced, so is there a chance I could come to Ann Arbor?"

#58ontheroster

What Michigan needs now is Chris Bryant, a 5 star offensive tackle from Chicago, 2 huge defensive tackles, a quarterback, Willingham and Rawles. Perhaps OL Jacob Fisher will recommit. I was at the hoops game tonight and saw Greg Mattison talking to Denver Colorado outside linebacker Leilen Willingham who is a 4 star recruit who is currently a "soft" commit to Texas A&M and I think there is a good chance that he may commit to Michigan real soon. I really like how this staff has come together and are bringing in some much needed defensive recruits and it seems like more of these kids are more willing to give Michigan a chance now that we have Mattison directing the defense someone with a proven and very sucessful track record. Plus the NFL experience is really the gravy to the whole meal and I really like that Brady Hoke is a outstanding recruiter himself and has put together a honest and classy coaching staff that knows how to win and will win. Re: Beilein: I am a strong believer in past records being an important indicator of a coach's likely future success. I do like Beilein, when he was hired I looked up his record. It is scary consistent in all of his prior jobs. I then looked up the past ten years or so of the final Big Ten BB standings and his likely record put us in 4th or 5th place in the conference. We need to get the big men in-state like we used to w/Tarpley, Mills, Vaught, Webber, etc. I mention this because being ranked in B-Ball during recruiting season can really help. Besides, I've loved M B-Ball since the days of Johnny Orr, Go Blue!!

Uh, we bought Webber. I don't think we need to do that again.

HOKE and company are doing an amazing job recruiting for the time they have. I hope we can land thomas rawls and a decent DT. That would be awesome.

1st Down has made the suggestion that we replace the tired, worn out and ineffective catch phrase "all in" with: THIS IS MICHIGAN. It was used by Coach Brady Hoke during his press conference. It says everything. I like it. THIS IS MICHIGAN Go Blue

Here is the Hoke video...I tried to post it before but someone at AA deleted it for some odd reason http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oja8RXz6wb8 I like the way Hoke says it emphatically!
