Michigan football facts and figures for 2011 season

By Kyle Meinke

A quick look at the 2011 Michigan football season through numbers:

MICHIGAN WOLVERINES

Coach: Brady Hoke (first season).

Last year: 7-6, 3-5 Big Ten.

Postseason: Lost 52-14 to Mississippi State in Gator Bowl.

Key returners

QB Denard Robinson (6-foot, 195 pounds) started all 13 games last year and set an NCAA record for single-season rushing yards by a quarterback (1,702). CBs Troy Woolfolk (6-0, 191) and J.T. Floyd (6-0, 185) are back after suffering season-ending injuries in 2010. WR Roy Roundtree (6-0, 177) had team-highs in catches (72), yards (935) and touchdowns (seven) last year.

Key newcomers

K Matt Wile (6-2, 208) has secured kickoff duties for the season opener, is the favorite to punt for suspended starter Will Hagerup and still is competing for place-kicker. LB Frank Clark (6-2, 228) likely won’t start, but could add depth in the linebacking corps. RB Thomas Rawls (5-10, 219) is one of the favorites to win the tailback job, and could still get snaps even if he doesn’t.

Key losses

LB Jonas Mouton was named second-team All-Big Ten on an otherwise shaky defense. CB James Rogers was forced into starting duty due to the injuries to Woolfolk and Floyd, and tied for the team lead in interceptions (three). DT Greg Banks started nine games on the defensive line.

Outlook

A first-year coach with new schemes on offense and defense usually spells disaster, although Michigan returns a combined 18 starters on offense and defense, which should expedite the transition. The Wolverines end the season with an imposing stretch at Iowa and Illinois and home against Nebraska and Ohio State. To get to a bowl game, they likely will have to go at least 3-1 in nonconference play. A slow start could yield total disaster for Hoke’s much-anticipated first campaign.

Circle this date

Sept. 10, when the Wolverines host Notre Dame in the first night game of Michigan Stadium’s 84-year history. The Irish will be fighting to avenge losses to Michigan the past two years; the Wolverines will be seeking a statement win early in the Brady Hoke Era.
