Michigan football team closes in on AP Top 25 spot

By Pete Bigelow

The Michigan football team didn't garner a single vote in the Associated Press Top 25 preseason poll. After a 30-10 thumping of UConn and Denard Robinson's breakout performance, that's significantly changed.

The Wolverines earned 71 votes in the weekly poll released Tuesday afternoon, good enough to put them No. 26, just behind Jim Harbaugh's Stanford team, which had 96 votes.

It's the highest the Wolverines have been ranked since they raced to a 4-0 record last season and climbed to No. 23.

Notre Dame, Michigan's opponent this Saturday, is also in the "others receiving votes" category, with 38 votes.

Here's the complete AP Top 25 poll released today.

Please don't pay attention to the polls until mid-season because it may set us up for destruction or a serious disappointment.

JamesLucas, Let me see. Last year... ater the first 4 games last year... UM was 4-0. At that time... everything about the team seemed better than the year before. Heck... UM was ranked 22, there was very premature talk of Forcier being a Heisman candidate. That's my comparison. So yep. Until the team makes it into the Big Ten schedule... and DR can hold up through the entire schedule... there is no more attrition in the secondary (like the guy that left the team today)... no more injuries to the receiving corp (like Roundtree)... etc. It's one game. If I recall... UM beat a WMU team (that was supposed to be competive last year) 31-7 to start the game. Seemed like everything was much better at this exact same time last year. I see a comparison to last year. As Mitch indicated... it's one game and maybe expectations should be tempered.

I think it's safe to say that Michigan fans could care less about the rankings. We need to thump ND and make them remember it for a long time. That's all that matters right now.

Lemasblue only knows two things 1. He hates Rich Rodriguez 2. No matter the conversation he must let everyone know he hates Rich Rodriguez. I can imagine someone asking Lemasblue would like fries with that? And answering I ******* hate Rich Rodriguez! Yea I will take fries."

Hey Webb. Find any post where I said anything about UConn before the game.

Robbie Webb.

And Lemansblue was one of the ones who said Michigan would ''For sure'' lose to Uconn, and that Uconn was very well coached (Which they are) and that they are much better than Michigan (Which they are not, clearly) and now all of a sudden he wants to go back on his word and say, ''Oh, that win was nothing, they were unranked.'' Can't wait to hear what the excuse is this Saturday. I will agree, I think it's too early to say Michigan is a changed team for the better. Yes, we beat a very good Uconn team, but that's just one game. We still have a lot of youth, especially in the secondary, and we have injuries to deal with, so it's too early to tell. Although Notre Dame will be tough to beat, especially at home, I think the true test comes October 9th. But, we have to take it one game at a time. Beat the Irish. GO BLUE!!!

We will see how Michigan can do come Saturday with ND on there grounds. Had them (ND) last year! But what happen for the rest of the season? Michigan should have played Detroit Lions someone would been bound to win that game............

No. 26 after week 1? Let me jump in...obviously UM will go undefeated the rest of the way and win the National Championship! It's not even a debate.

This is Mi football? A story about almost being in the top 25. After beating a unranked team at home? Cannot wait to end the RR error.

JamesLucas, If you liked Drew Sharps article... you'll really like the New York Posts. http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/more_sports/what_con_job_rzaYtj3o5DxumI8MeSl4yJ Heck, New York seems to hate the State of Michigan in it's entirity.

Lokalisierung must be a Sparty, only a sparty fan would read a Drew Sharp story, that is a dirty trick posting a link to a Drew Sharp story.

Well look at that... Mitch and I agree. I thought it was a nice win, but I recall seeing this same scenario last year. Let all the clubs get into the "meat" of the conference schedule before we start declaring Heisman's and top teams. I think after next week, we will only know the true status of Penn State... don't envy a game against Alabama.

If our injuries occur in the places where we have some depth, then we could win 8 games this year. If they come at QB, RB, or DB we will have the same problems that we had last year. Top 25 means absolutly nothing right now. If we are in the top 25 after the Ohio State game, then I will be flying on cloud nine into the Capitol One bowl!

"because a Michigan fan would never list Michigan State as a test game." After the last couple seasons I think anyone that is a Big 10 fan would.

I hope that the media doesn't jump on a Michigan bandwagon if they beat Notre Dame like they did last season. Michigan will need to play 7 or 8 games before we can get an idea of what type of team they are. By then, they will have played tougher opponents like Notre Dame, Michigan State, Iowa and Penn State.
