Michigan football team isn't giving up on Will Campbell, not even close

By Nick Baumgardner

Junior defensive tackle Will Campbell has his weight down and is finding his game, Michigan players and coaches say.

If anyone knows how dangerous Michigan defensive tackle Will Campbell can be, it's sophomore safety Thomas Gordon.

High school teammates at Detroit Cass Tech, Gordon saw how Campbell became one of the country's highest-rated recruits.

"If he comes in low," Gordon says, "you can't stop him."

As teammates on the Michigan football team, though, Gordon's also witnessed how the 6-foot-5, 322-pounder has turned in a largely disappointing college career to this point.

Campbell entered this season with just five tackles. He also drew criticism from the Michigan staff in the spring for reporting to camp out of shape.

Since then? A different tone. Hoke praised Campbell for entering fall camp in better shape. And though he's been relegated to reserve duty, Campbell's production on the field has gradually increased.

THURSDAY LIVE CHAT

Come back to AnnArbor.com at noon Thursday for a live chat with Kyle Meinke. He'll recap the Wolverines' win over San Diego State, discuss news that emerged this week and preview the game against Minnesota on Saturday.
Campbell has three tackles in four games. He also recovered a crucial fumble during Michigan's win against Notre Dame.

Improvement for sure. But for Michigan coach Brady Hoke, it hasn't been enough.

"I'm glad Thomas is coaching him up," Hoke said, smiling. "I really am. And Thomas is right. And this happens to a lot of guys that were really big in high school. … It's one of those things where he just has to play lower, and he just has to be more consistent with that part of it.

"His get-off-the-football (attitude) is something that he has to be conscious about and make good habits with."

The discussion of Campbell's habits is nothing new. Hoke asked him to lose weight, and Campbell obliged. He was listed at 331 pounds; he now weighs 322. He's been asked to play with more enthusiasm, and at times, he's accomplished that.

"I thought that when he went in, he gave us a spark and played with a lot of passion," Michigan defensive coordinator Greg Mattison said following the Notre Dame win.

The weight is down, the interest is up but the poor habits haven't totally vanished. If they ever do, Michigan's oft-maligned defensive line will receive a boost.

If they don't, then Campbell will continue to be the team's most imposing athlete that doesn't make an impact.

“Will does a good job at the point of attack, but sometimes he stands up (too much) and looks for the ball,” Michigan senior defensive tackle Mike Martin said. “It’s something that coach always talks about, the block is going to take you to the ball and you’re going to feel it.

“He needs to break that habit of looking for the ball, and (be better at) finishing plays.”

Martin explained that some of Campbell’s issues are things the entire defensive line struggles with from time to time.

And if anyone thinks Michigan’s first-year coach is giving up on his most massive defensive weapon, they’d best think again. Hoke clearly showed interest in the first quarter of last week’s victory against San Diego State, removing Campbell from the game before spending an extended amount of time giving him a one-on-one sideline tutorial.

Hoke’s message at the time, per the Michigan Sports Network, was simply to quit thinking and start playing.

“Will did some real good things in there,” Hoke said of the SDSU game. “And he’s improving.”

The Will Campbell reclamation project continues to march on.

Hoke’s not giving up, Martin and the defensive line aren’t giving up, and neither is Campbell’s old high school teammate.

Gordon’s seen him at his best, and at his worst. And four games into the 2011 season, he says he’s starting to see more of the former than the latter.

"You see some flashes here and there," Gordon says. “It comes from when he stays low. If he does that, he’ll be good.

“(Because) when he stays low, he stays in the backfield.”

Anyone making excuses for the previous defensive staff, needs to watch this video of ESPN at our spring practice earlier this year.....Coach Hoke and Coach Mattison had to show these kids how to keep their hands inside and deliver a blow! That is DL 101 folks... here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07tXfoTmkA0 This DL was poorly coached the past 3 years... and WC bounced from DL to OL... its only natural that he is now getting proper coaching and understands how to actually play DL in DI. Go Blue.

Come see if we're talking about the WCiMFH more than three years after he left the program. Until then there's no point of comparison . . . except in the slappies' imagination. GN&GL

So what you're saying is you're no better than the "RichRod slappies"? Noted.

"The lengths you people will go to bash Rich Rodriguez are pretty wild" Really? More than four years after he coached his last game at the U of M, the RichRod slappies are still blaming Lloyd Carr for the team's current problems. I sure hope the WCiMFH is Catholic, because the slappies want to nominate him for sainthood. Good Night and Good Luck

would not have mattered who the coach was last year, will campbell buried himself on the depth chart! this is all on him. . . it's nice to see he is stepping up his game and if he wants it bad enough he could turn out to be a great one. it's time to sxxt or get off the pot! GO BLUE!!!

Campbell is Lloyd Carr's fault coz LC lost to Ohio State many times before he retired and he left the cupboard bare. lol! This year, it is all Campbell. Other players caught up with him.

Outstanding observation, Lorain. And for the record, if you put Jordan Kovacs' heart into the bodies of any 11 college football players, you'd probably have a title contender. As for Campbell? His teammates all speak highly of him, but no one seems to be giving him a hall pass either. Also, we don't get to see a lot of practice throughout the week, but the few minutes we do get generally features a lot of Brady Hoke hanging around Will Campbell. If Campbell exhausts his eligibility at Michigan without ever making a real impact, he'll likely have no one to blame but himself.

I am getting real sick of posters who always need to find a way to make the previous coach, the source of all our problems. The problem here is, quite simply, WILL CAMPBELL. When, and if, he decides he wants to make difference, then he will. If he doesn't reach that decision point, the kid will always think about, 'what might have been'. So far my observations are, that he is 'dead weight'. But now he has three coaches pushing him, instead of only one. But the bottom line is the same. The world is full of guys with 'great potential'....if you know what I mean. If we could put Jordon Kovachs 'heart' into Campbells' body, we'd have a game breaker.

Yeah, LS. It got real tiring during and after the 3-year tenure of the WCiMFH to hear all of his failures being blamed on the previous coaching staff, too. Good Night and Good Luck

Actually, it shows coach Hoke teaching ONE KID how to keep his hands inside and punch. One kid =/= the D Line. And I'm pretty sure he was #37 Terrance Talbot, a cornerback, not a lineman anyway.

Lorain.... when you have a moment, go over to youtube and search for ESPNs spring practice with Brady Hoke and Michigan...hosted by Urban Meyer. There you will see coach Hoke teaching the D Line how to punch... they didnt even know how to keep their hands inside and punch....that is on the former staff.... it just is... they were poorly coached on the DL for the past 3 years...this is a fact.

It's nice to hear a coach talk about working with a talented player who is underachieving. The last guy in here couldn't coach, buried Campbell on the depth chart in a position he knows nothing about, and forgot about him.

Dude

Thu, Sep 29, 2011 : 2:59 p.m.

No. My argument is that being a 5-star highschool OL suggest the position is NOT "a position he knows nothing about" as you suggested. I thought I was very clear the first time. Oh, and Sparky79 has an interesting article here, hmmmm?

Sparky79

Thu, Sep 29, 2011 : 1:22 p.m.

Yeah, the last guy buried him at a position he knows nothing about because Campbell ASKED to be moved to offensive line and other players on the team thought it was a good move for him. http://www.annarbor.com/sports/um-football/michigan-football-team-shuffles-linemen-in-hopes-of-solving-dearth-of-depth/ John U. So your argument is that a player's high school position is relevant to his collegiate experience?

Dude

Thu, Sep 29, 2011 : 4:46 a.m.

Will Campbell was an all american-caliber OL as well as DT. It was hardly "a position he knows nothing about".

A good coach gets the most out of his talent. Rodriguez couldn't be bothered. Sometimes talented kids need some help getting where they need to be.

Who recruited Campbell? Whoever did obviously thought he could help the team, when a player doesn't perform then he shouldn't play. That shouldn't be put on the coach. Does the name Todd Marinovich ring a bell?
