Michigan left tackle Taylor Lewan received a simple message from No. 1 pick Jake Long

By Pete Bigelow

Comparisons already have been made between Michigan left tackle Taylor Lewan and another guy who used to hold the same position, former No. 1 NFL Draft pick Jake Long.

Both started as redshirt freshmen for the Wolverines at left tackle. Both wear No. 77. Both are imposing physical athletes - Lewan at 6-foot-6 and Long at 6-foot-8. But Lewan understands that any comparisons are premature.

Here’s an extra nugget that didn’t make yesterday’s profile of Lewan, but one that illustrates the gap between the two:

The two linemen met last year on the sideline during the Ohio State game in Ann Arbor.

“He’s just standing there, and he’s a very large individual,” Lewan said. “I had my shoulder pads on and he was still wider than me. It was a little bit ridiculous.”

Long was the first overall pick of the 2008 NFL Draft and anchors the Miami Dolphins line. Lewan received a short, simple message from his predecessor.

“You better do something with that number,” Long told him.

Actually that year was a red shirt year, so yeah he was on the team, but if he wasnt a "Player" then does it really count? Ill give it to you though, i mean i guess he was a part of THE TEAM!, THE TEAM!!, THE TEAM!!!

Jake Long was the #1 pick in the NFL the year he graduated. That's a tough act to follow for any college football player from any school. Lewan has the physical tools to be a good one if he can only learn to channel his temper in positive ways.

Taylor Lewan and Jake Long are 0-5 against Ohio State? 0-6?

I'd listen to Mr. Long if I were Taylor. But I imagine Lewan will fill out some and approach Jake's size before he's done. But, he also will need to curb his tendency to get penalties. Jake Long would destroy people, but he seldom got whistled for dumb penalties. Lewan should be fun to watch as he continues to develop. On one play against Iowa I saw him pancake two guys. Go Blue tomorrow!
