Michigan linebacker Jonas Mouton explains where the Wolverines are

By Michael Rothstein

Michigan linebacker Jonas Mouton tied for the team lead with 12 tackles and had a sack during Penn State's 41-31 win over the Wolverines. The Michigan defense allowed 435 yards to a struggling Nittany Lions offense.

Mouton explains where the Wolverines go from here in this post-game video clip.

"watch film, correct our mistakes" is getting old. Michigan had two weeks to prepare for a weaker (than last season) Penn State team with their back-up QB, and they somehow end up making him look like a top Big Ten QB. This is ALL on the coaches. I don't want to hear talent excuses anymore. I've had RichRod's back for 2-1/2 seasons now, and I'm sorry this one falls squarely on him. Having two weeks to prepare and still commiting 5 penalties, still not able to stop anyone, and not being able to beat a team they should be beat...coach, as much as I do not want to say it or think it the seat just got hot again. Michigan will be lucky to end up 6-6. They will not beat Illinois - I know it. The should beat Purdue...but who knows.

Can anyone else sense the level of embarrassment in Jona's voice? He really doesnt want to be talking to a reporter, and he really doesnt want to discuss their problems. "Go back home, watch videos, correct errors" Thats the pat answer we've got from players and coaches all year.

Next season's team will be a night and day difference, as long as nobody leaves and that requires support. I feel sorry for you fair-weather fans. The Michigan football program is far bigger than the Coach and everyone has gotten used to having a good team with great players just because it's Michigan. As though the M is annoited to be great just because. Those days are gone and it's not due to the coach. The players have to look to themselves and there is no senior leadership, (as robo wisely points out) which is totally necessary for a decent team. No leadership on defense at all and really not that much on offense either. Molk's blatent TD killing holding penalty on the 5 showed that. This third down baloney, it's because of being outmatched physically. Look at Joe Pa, he's up and down and all a coach can do is just stay positive. I agree, the team is bad but the potential is obvious and most you guys know it. (At least for now the noisy MSU trolls are absent- like flies after a cold front.) Give the coach until at the end of the season before quitting on the team which- also requires supporting their coach. I can understand wanting to lash out, but give the players some time to get it together and that will take at least another year, unfortunately.

Maybe RR's failures are actually Bill Martin's come-uppance for his pompous, disrespectful attitude towards those that he doesn't see as his equal. He will now go down as one of the worst athletic diretors in Michigan's storied history.

I feel for the players. They deserve better - much better. Gregg Robinson is simply inept. The defense blows hot and cold, mostly cold. He must go - at least him - the sooner the better. Brandon knows and he must act. The players deserve better - the fans deserve better - Michigan Nation deserves only the best. Bill Martin, a real estate and abnking man - not a former athlete - wrecked the program and whomever hired him should also be fired.

Ethan, He isn't an offensive Guru in the slightest sense. It's sandlot football he's putting out there. Give the ball to our fastest kid and everyone block for him....oh yeah, it takes a real wizard to run this offense! He's done this his whole career in a mediocre league and surprised a few teams during the way. Many other coaches have success with their "zone-read option" but he can't on the Big Ten stage. Stop believing we will look like Florida and Oregon because of the name of the scheme and look at how it's coached instead. Maybe then you can chastise someone for mentioning how bad RR is offensively.

GoblueinNE_PA, Trust me my friend, I never drank the Kool-Aid or even sipped a bit to sample the flavor. I've never changed my stance from last season and feel that RR will never be a success at Michigan. As I said last season, even if he survives this year, the best he will ever do here is 9-3. The Big Ten is too physical and his Purdue/Northwestern brand of finesse football won't work. There's no way this team will be able to get through seasons against Iowa, Nebraska, MSU, OSU, and other B10 caliber teams without taking a beating and breaking down. You may have thought I took a sip just because when the team was winning, in the interests of being equitable and being a fan, I pointed out what went well and celbrated. I always knew in my heart, though, that in the end it wasn't championship caliber ball and never would be under RR.

All this from a linebacker that quit on at least three plays where he could have pursued and made something happen. My 14-year-old son noticed it first and we rewound the DVR and he was right. He was blocked, got up, and stood and watched Royster run on 5 yards downfield. Then we started watched Mouton closely, and he did the same thing at least 2 more times. There are no senior leaders on this team, and when Martin is out there is no emotion or fire. Every team has players. Some teams have heart. This one doesn't. Enough talk...step up or sit down!

Do you know UM pay RR $2 million a year? I can do the same thing and break all UM football record by paying me say $70,000.

I watch this clip and I feel sorry for guys like Mouton. He's left to answer for what happened on Saturday rather than the Hack and GRob being pulled to the carpet. AZwolverine, you are correct. This offense isn't really that good, especially against a decent defense. This offense is completely dependent upon DRob, or Tate when he's in. Also, AZ, glad to see your back. Earlier in the season, it looked like you'd drank the koolaid. It seems like you've swung back to your position of last year. Glad to have you on board again.

ethan, He's not a proven offensive guru in the Big Ten. He's put up a lot of points against mediocre competition, including PSU last night. What happened against MSU? 17 points. What happened against PSU the two years prior to this? 13 and 10 points respectively. What happened against OSU over the past two seasons? 17 points COMBINED! Against top defenses, this offense hasn't done anything. The measuring stick of success at Michigan isn't how many points we put up against Bowling Green and Delaware St, it's how we produce against the top teams, especially OSU. This offense has yet to do that in the Big Ten.

Seriously, someone is going to comment on the offense he's put together? That's just starting a dumb argument. Rodriguez is a proven offensive guru.

Tulsa, I agree with you 100%. This team DOES say the right things, and most likely they truly have that mindset of correcting mistakes, but they're not capable of doing it and that falls on the shoulders of the coaching staff. During the 5-0 start people were skeptical and many say this coming, but the players were so adamant that this sort of streak wouldn't happen again. Yet, here we are. I understand we're playing young kids, but at some point as the season wears on they grow up. This team is getting worse as the year advances and appears lost and confused. ESPN.Com referred to Michigan as a 'sinking ship,' and they're right. RichRod is a terrible, terrible fit here and needs to go immediately. When they sat 5-0, I looked through the schedule and predicted they wouldn't win another game. And they won't. From 5-0 to 5-7, what a disgrace.

He's not even good enough to be a offensive coordinator.

It sounds good to say that they'll watch film and go out and correct their mistakes, but then they go out and make the same ones the next game. Jonas Mouton played a decent game and I though Demens played decently also at linebacker in place of Ezeh, but that was about it. If U-M doesn't beat Purdue, they probably go 5-7 again and miss a bowl game. Rich Rodriguez' Big Ten record is 4-16. At some point, U-M needs to hire a real head coach, not just an offensive coordinator.
