Michigan loses 3rd verbal commit after offensive lineman Caleb Stacey withdraws from class

By Kyle Meinke

The Michigan football team's acclaimed recruiting class suffered its third casualty Saturday when offensive lineman Caleb Stacey announced he has withdrawn his pledge.

The Cincinnati native revealed via Twitter that he intends to play for the hometown Bearcats.

"Before it gets out from anyone but me I have decided to decommitt from Michigan to stay home and play ball at the University of Cincinnati," Stacey tweeted to his more than 1,300 followers.

Stacey is the third verbal commit no longer in Michigan's class, joining tight end Pharaoh Brown, who was dropped after he took a visit to Oregon, and cornerback Anthony Standifer.

Michigan played this past season with only eight scholarship offensive linemen, and head coach Brady Hoke, ever mindful of line play, has expressed his desire to reload at that position. In this regard, Stacey's departure hurts the Wolverines.

But it shouldn't hurt much.

Michigan is stockpiled at offensive line in this class, with verbal commitments already in from five-star Kyle Kalis; four-stars Blake Bars and Erik Magnuson; and three-star Ben Braden. Three-star tight end pledge A.J. Williams also could play the position, and many project him to do so.

Related: Get to know Michigan's 2012 recruiting class

That group is one of the best in the country, rivaled only by Ohio State.

Now, the Wolverines appear to have room for two more offensive linemen. Their 2012 class currently stands at 23 commitments, and is expected to have room for up to 28. However, it's possible they will not max out this class, leaving more room for the 2013 cycle.

Michigan is courting several blue-chip offensive linemen, and is considered to be one of two frontrunners for Josh Garnett, the top recruit from the state of Washington. His other favorite is Stanford, where he recently took a visit.

Garnett is a five-star prospect and the nation's No. 3 guard, according to Scout. He is the No. 1 four-star according to Rivals.

Rivals' Tim Sullivan told AnnArbor.com that Stanford and Michigan remain close for Garnett, but gives the Wolverines an edge because of Garnett's emphasis on personal relationships in the recruiting process.

One of Garnett's best friends in football is Magnuson, who already is committed to Michigan.

"He has said the relationships will be the difference, and then he’ll say, 'My good friend Erik Magnuson...'" Sullivan said. "It’s almost like a hint sort of thing."

Other prospects eying Michigan include four-star Jordan Diamond of Chicago and Alex Kozan of Castle Rock, Colo.

It's important the Wolverines finish out their offensive line class strong not only for the sake of immediate depth, but also to counter Ohio State's spectacular defensive line class.

The Buckeyes already have verbal commitments from defensive linemen Noah Spence (No. 5 overall player in the country), Adolphus Washington (No. 10), Tommy Schutt (No. 48) and Se'Von Pittman (No. 58).

Verbal commitments are nonbinding. Recruits can sign letters of intent Feb. 1.

ohio fan seems lost. . . first, you have NO POINT except to smack talk. seconed, the only one bitter and concerned here is you! you are very concerned that MICHIGAN is back and you are very bitter that ohio got caught cheating for the last ten years ( loss of recruits, coach fired, star qb kicked off team, NO BOWL GAME and probation) boy thats going to leave a mark!!! i guess that would put any one in denial and thats why you have to come on a MICHIGAN site and thump your chest (look at us we are the greatest college football program in the universe)!!! again nothing but JIBBER-JABBER and flapping your wings. . . football games are won on the field not on your keyboard. . . talk is cheap and you are full of it!! AM You're back! Great. How do you explain ohio, with all those great recruiting years lately losing to Michigan with their so-so classes over the same period? UM has never won a game vs Michigan and he never has beaten Coach Hoke. 0.000000 winning %. LIFETIME! How do you get some players to go to ohio? Great gifts, nice cars, non working jobs that pay well, and cheap tats. Man, haven't you been reading the papers? It's why you needed a new coach in the first place. And he loves ohio. It just took $20 million for him to find that "love". Now every time he leaves the state "lying eyes" fans will have to wonder; "Is he coming back?" Come back anytime AM. And remember games aren't won in the winter by Rivals or ESPN. 0.00000 winning % by the wandering Meyer over Coach Hoke. This is Michigan! And you are not. Go Blue!

Umgoblue I understand your bitterness and concern. If our head coach was quoted like below that would also get my attention. Funny thing is G Joke even shows some concern and the average Michigan fan is in denial. TOSU has 8 remaining slots remaining and word it that at least 3 will be filled w/ 4 or 5 star kids. You really have to be ignorant if after getting blown by in recruiting it is not a concern. Again even Joke is showing concern and after hearing him during past interviews it is hard picturing this man walking and talking at the same time. Now talking and eating is very believable. The rest of the Big Ten coaches probably feel like Brady Hoke did when he was asked how he felt about the hire of Urban Meyer. "Not good"

ohio fan just doese not get it. same old jibber-jabber, bla, bla, bla! your just like a PARROT that repeats the same old"we are better then you" that your post everytime! here's some fun facts, ohio had 2 players kicked off the football team, redshirt freshman fullback david durham is leaving ohio to transfer somewhere else, kyle kalis decommits ohio and commits to MICHIGAN, THANK YOU VERY MUCH and iam sure there are more. these things happen every year at every college so what's your point? maybe durham and kalis dident like the fact that urbanblight was to much like your idol the vest? chest thumping and smack talk is all you got!! the game is the game again and i think you are worried! SEE YOU ON THE FIELD because thats where all the talking is done at! GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! side note. . . i would never or have i ever gone onto another schools site, let alone talk smack (i guess this makes you feel good). the only thing i care about is MICHIGAN! you seem to spend more time on MICHIGAN sites then ohio sites. . . maybe you are not really an ohio fan and are really a closet MICHIGAN fan?

At least Joke is not as stupid as he looks. michigan fan should be so bright. All this activity has elevated the OSU class from outside the Top 20 when Meyer was hired in late November, to No. 3 in the current Scout team rankings, (leap-frogging Michigan with these latest commits), and also No. 3 on the Rivals list. Remember this is the year that was supposed to be the "down" year for recruiting, when the Buckeye program would pay the price for their season of turmoil and NCAA sanctions. The rest of the Big Ten coaches probably feel like Brady Hoke did when he was asked how he felt about the hire of Urban Meyer. "Not good" It gets better by the day.

Michigan fan just does not get it. The point of my post was the Urb blew by joke in recruiting in less then two month PLUS w/ a one year suspension. You have had practically more people bail on your program since Urb arrived then he has snagged. How in Gods name can a program that is on one year suspension, played 500 ball out recruit a team that won 10 plus games and was in a BCS game? That is what happens when top coaches like Harbaugh and Miles give your program the shaft and you have to settle for a 3rd rate coach like joke. Kids want to go w/ a proven winner like Orbs 2 National Championships and not a guy like joke that let his SDSU team know w/ a text that he is leaving. Classy. Urb has a 842 winning percentage and Jokes is 527 and was below 500 prior to this year. Can you say loser? Word is that Michigan let is grounds crew go as they let joke on the field once a week and he grazes it down to perfect playing length. If joke is the picture of a Michigan man Jenny Craig should relocate her corporate office from here in San Diego to Michigan. Geez Grady toss in a salad.

C-Bob, ohio hasn't beaten Michigan since Nov 2009 so it's like 781 days since the cheaters from C bus won over the Wolverines. ohio has already been eliminated from the 2012 Big Ten Championship game and WILL NOT be going to a bowl this year. What I can't wait for is the book that TP is going to (co)-write when he gets cut this year. That will shine the light all over the garbage dump ohio calls the Ath. Dept. He will need the money when the IRS gets done with him for not filing correct 1040s for the last several years. Michigan has beaten the new liar everytime it's played him. If ohio doens't cheat, and with their program already under double secret probation they can't, Michigan will enjoy playing with a level field, where Coach Hoke has taken UM to the woodshed every time. So keep on posting here if it makes you feel better. You could be the shining star on "lying eyes" websites because you serve up lots of drivel, nicely. Remember games that don't count, DON'T COUNT! I'd really only count 1 Nat. Championship. Because one of those championships was against OSUcks. That's was really no contest. Because everyone knows OSUcks can not beat an SEC team. Michigan, on the other hand, beat Fla. when they played them, between their two Nat. Championships. There is no way Urban Meyer is going to win another Nat. This whole thing of committing, decommitting, etc is crazy. I don't understand why football doesn't have what college basketball has, with 2 signing periods. At the same time, I feel for the high school kids who may not know exactly where they want to go or should go as juniors or early seniors. It is a hard life-changing decision and if there is indecision, it is understandable. And since coaches can up and leave (read: Todd Graham) or get fired (lots of them), the players better be sure of the university. AT the same time, if they are not ready, they should just wait on the decision. Competition for position by future signed recruits should not really affect them, in my opinion, because if they are not good enough to attend university X, the coaches likely would not have offered. If it does scare them off, then better that they renege on the commitment. But after reading the article in the NY Times today about what a huge business college sports is (required reading everybody), it is just eye opening to say the least and maybe we ALL ought to take a step back and not fret so much.

Sun, Jan 22, 2012 : 1:34 a.m.

We will be fine. So much of college football is "coaching up" the young guys. Look at Wisconsin -- most of their recruits are not so highly rated and they have gone to two straight Rose Bowls. I am worried about Urban Meyer at OSU, as he will be incredibly tough to beat. Expect both both PSU and NEB to begin a "fade". These teams always appear to be so good -- then they start to play 8 Big Ten games per year and they find out. Here is who I expect to be very tough Big Ten teams in 2012 and beyond: 1. OSU 2. UM 3. MSU 4. Wiscy 5. Toss-up: NEB, PSU, Iowa, Then we have some weak programs: Minny, Indiana, Northwestern, Purdue, ILL. I wish that I could place UM above OSU!!!! JEFF

Our recruiting class is going to be fine.....we have three real holes to fill now and those are OL, CB and TE - and the three words that spell relief are; Garnett, Reeves and Grant. MgoBlueForTim.....current recruiting class + three

I'd say the biggest hole is actually at DT.

I'm very interested to see UM's 2012 offensive line class battle OSU's defensive line class. If these classes live up to hype their getting now, I'd say were all in for some great games. The rivalry is live and well now that UM has a real coach again.

I had a feeling one of the lesser rated OL would de-commit, hopefully We can get Either Garnett or Diamond and I'd definitely like to get Kozan because we are recruiting him at Center. Good luck to you Caleb, hope you have a fine career and I think you made a good decision for yourself, he was probably going to get lost in the shuffle at the position.

Well, I appreciate the positive outlook, this hurts more than anyone seems to be willing to admit. He was recruited to play C. A position of significant need. It hurts, and he didn't leave because he would "get lost in the shuffle". Why can't you take the kid at his word? He left because he wanted to play closer to home.

Going from the U of M to Cincinnati tells you that he isn't that much of a loss to the football team. Hopefully he'll do well at Cincinnati and further his education and football career there.
