Michigan moves to No. 1 spot on CBS Sports Team Recruiting Rankings

By AnnArbor.com Staff

A verbal commitment from Ohio offensive lineman Kyle Kalis moved the Michigan football team's 2012 recruiting class to the No. 1 spot on the recently-updated CBS Sports Team Recruiting Rankings.

Kalis' commitment gave the Wolverines five players on MaxPreps/CBS Sports recruiting analyst Tom Lemming's national top 100 list.

Kalis is No. 60 on that list. Other Michigan recruits on it include Detroit Cass Tech cornerback Terry Richardson (No. 30), California offensive lineman Erik Magnuson (No. 79), Farmington Hills Harrison defensive end Mario Ojemudia (No. 94) and Illinois cornerback Anthony Standifer (No. 97).

Texas, No. 2 team on the updated team ranking, has four non-binding verbal commitments from Lemming's top-100 list. No other team has more than three.

Other Big Ten teams among the rankings are Wisconsin (No. 16), Michigan State (No. 24) and Penn State (No. 25).

Talent--that's what will put the Wolverines back in the National Championship conversation. X's & O's are fine, but pro prospects with character are what will bring this program back to its traditional greatness, and provide a stream of great talent for a great future. Congrats to Hoke and the entire staff for getting off to an incredible start.

Christian Pace and Kellen Jones are both not listed in the 2011 UM Media Guide. Hope it's an oversight but I doubt they'd make a mistake like that. Not sure what's going on with them.

Let's wait and see how it plays out on the field.that's the only thing that really counts. The 3 star, the 4 star ,the 5 star is only theory remember.

This just in from Purdue University, where the coaching staff complains, that Brady Hoke is just another a 'Snake Oil Salesman', from Ann Arbor!

Brady Hoke is doing an excellent job selling Michigan to recruits. He and his staff deserve a lot of praise for their recruiting success thus far. The key thing is, IMO, he is beating out OSU and MSU for highly touted recruits. It's something that Rich wasn't able to do. Good recruiting doesn't necessarily translate to profound success on the field, however, it goes a long way in getting you there.

Just 6 months ago all of the naysayers were complaining about the "late" decision to fire whatshisname, and then they criticized the hiring of Coach Hoke. In a short amount of time Coach Hoke and his staff pulled out a Top 25 class for 2011, and at the moment have the # 1 class for 2012. NO ONE predicted this much recruiting success in such a short time. Well done Coach Hoke and staff. Go Blue !

Though I am skeptical of recruiting overall, it sure seems like Hoke had a plan before he got here (he did know he always wanted to come to Michigan as HC), and as he is following that plan, he continues to be the tonic we needed. Let's hope for lots more.

Another note, wish this blog will stop hyping up this Kalis kid.. He's not even considered the best in the nation obviously. He isnt the first player with talent from ohio to land at michigan so he isnt any kind of trendsetter.

Mr. Kalis is ranked the Number ONE football player coming out of OH for 2012, the number 6th rated O-Lineman NATIONALLY. He's well spoken, sincere, and looking for the best place for him to develop into the best student/athlete. I think he's done good. And if you disagree, that's OK too. (He thinks he is a trendsetter. Decommitted from tsopin, went north, loved what he saw, committed to Michigan, and now he's recruiting others to follow him because "the Ohio-Michigan border is now open". TiM Go Blue!

Im convinced that this is a good class, but im over the ranking system. Of all the recruits none have a consistant range of ranking. Kalis is 21 in scout.com but 60 in this one? The only thing that has any fact is that Michigan will have a top 10 class, but there are plenty more high ranking recruits on the market so that could change by feb. With only 5 offers remaining i find it hard to believe they will stay number 1. Texas has more talent than ohio, the southeast is the new found gold rush for recruits and california is still better than ohio. Michigan doesnt have many recruits outside the midwest so that will hurt their ranking. For a team that hasnt won a game yet its best to get what you can now rather than have a 8-4 year and go for the big time.

CW Welcome to the Michigan football site. Much be hard goings down in C Bus for you right now. You can hang around here and put your negative slant on possitive developments regarding UM football. Heck, it makes it all the sweeter knowing how much it gets to you. I hope most of fans for tsopio are using the shuttle tiles in their underwear because the NCAA is going to burn that program a newl orafice and I don't anyone to get hurt. TiM Go Blue!

This is most positive and certainly noteworthy because again it sends notice Michigan Football is making the right moves. Critics, no we haven't won anything yet - but hey for us Michigan Football Faithful, the little positive things, the off season recruitment and days leading up to the games are what we live for. For me, I'm doing some pretty darn good living right now - and it will only get better with time ! In Caution - Dave Brandon quoted this morning that Brady Hoke has done a great job putting his football system together, but beware, he doesn't have all the pieces this year to make that system work completely. Let's Faithful please be some what patient - we know we are going to see some improvement this year, but hang tough because your gonna love this show in a few years ! MgoBlueForTiM.........and please give Hoke a couple more cylinders for his racing motor.

The turnaround in recruiting by Coach Hoke and staff is pretty amazing. Granted, recruiting class rankings only mean so much. And we may not finish out at #1, but I'd be ecstatic with a top 5 finish. Michigan's talent level has slipped at too many positions over the past 5 years, but this class will help get us back to where we used to be soon.

I know growing up and living in Ann Arbor means I'm biased, but I just can't imagine anyone in their right mind actually choosing to come here. Here, I am doing everything I can to make sure my kids don't make the same mistake my wife and I made when, because of family, we decided to settle for Ann Arbor, and now, I read that the top athletes in the country are choosing to spend the best years of their lives in this miserable dump. Hey, recruits, there are wonderful college towns out there with beautiful weather, mountains, ocean, etc. Do you really want walk to class in -20 windchill and a grey sky when you could be hanging-out on the beach with a bunch of girls in bikinis? Think about it. There are no do-overs in college.

It must be where and how you live. Ann Arbor/UM are rated one of the best places to live and go to school in the country. BTW, unless you are an indenture servant you can move. You know there are "no do-overs" so go make yourself happy.

Nice to be number 1 at anything, so this is reassuring. Good to see Hoke getting athletes to want to come, and athletes with good records in high school in MIchigan's natural territory. But I think recruiting rankings and a dollar will get you a bagel with cream cheese (in some cities). Who knows how many of these guys will get injured, transfer, not pan out, not deal well with the pressure, etc? (Remember the praise heaped on former coach for Cullen Christian's recruitment?) So I think we should all take a deep breath, say go blue, and remember not to pressure these guys too much. Let's hope Hoke does as well on the sidelines as he does in living rooms. Nice difference from the last 5-6 years, though!!
