The Big Ten is hardly irrelevant, even in the BCS. Total BCS At-Large selections: Big Ten 9 SEC 7 Big XII 5 Mountain West 3 WAC 3 Independent (Notre Dame) 3 Pac Ten 2 ACC, Big East, MAC, Sun Belt, Conference USA 0

By adding five more teams they could change the name of the conference to The Big 16 and have sixteen teams instead of 11 teams in the Big 10 Conference. Gee, you'd think that a conference made up of college teams would be able to count.

Please take Nebraska and get us away from the University of Texas ran Big 12...yes I am now begging. The only thing we have in common with UT is arguing who has more cattle. I do not know anyone around this area who does not want to join the BIG 10 and stay in the big12. I am sure NU would be a good an honorable addition to the BIG 10...academically for sure. There might be some interesting gameday gatherings on my block in suburban Omaha; there are nearly as many Hawkeye fans as there are Husker fans here.

Why can't we just add Pitt and be done with it?

@ PortageLkBl.... keep the faith and believe in GO BLUE... yes we'll have changes, not all good... but one thing for sure - Michigan is Michigan, and whatever Mr. Rodriguez has been brewing on the stove, will be the best meal you will ever have! Sources told me Michigan will only win 8-9 games this year and if go by the the 'Sources' correct percentage ratio - that translates to 12-13 wins. GO KING, GO BLUE.

Saginaw that's the key word, was. Times are a changing and I for 1 like it or let's say to coin a phrase, I could care less. Mich. will take on all comers and we'll be just fine folks. The beer will taste just as good, the hot dogs will still taste better on game day and the ticket prices will keep going up what's not to like? There's gonna be change whether we like it or not that's what we humans do. We don't like sitting still and getting complacent hence the spread and RR arrival. Sometimes these things work out and sometimes they don't and in Mich. case if they don't well you all get my drift.

Sources are telling me that there WILL BE five new schools added to the Big Ten, They will be: Delaware St., Wayne St., Appalachian St., Grand Valley St., and Butler. Think about it, there will be a team that we have beat in football, one that beat us, one that is pretty good in D2, a local school and one that will beat most of the Big Ten in basketball. What a nice mix. It will also give Michigan a few more years before they will be expected to beat these teams on a regular basis. It is a win, win for everybody.

Navy will pound ND this year -- the same way that Navy pounded Missouri in the Texas Bowl.

ok, I am very old. I have grown up with Big Ten Football. Here is how college football was supposed to be: 1. Football is played on real grass. 2. Kick-off is at 1:30 on Staurday. 3. No artificial lighting. 4. No domed stadiums. 5. Only one important game is televised each week. 6. There are 10 teams in the Big Ten -- send PSU back to the Big East. 7. The winner of the Big Ten regular season plays the winner of the PAC 8 in the Rose Bowl.

@ Hans Masing... Yes, I'm not sure why those headlines change... is it just the excitement, wishful thinking or a bad case of telephone-telephone we played as kids. My heart sank when I read the headline, eased up a bit when I read the whole story. I have said all alone I wanted Missouri, and it sounds like that is possible - but can we stay at 12 teams? @ Marvin Face - are you a Big 12 fan, faithful, etc.? We here on the comment page would love to hear more from you - your perspective, details, ect..... please come back and comment more!!!

So does the Big East fold if the Big Ten steals 3 schools and the ACC comes in and takes 4 more? So much for ND's affiliation with the Big East if it doesn't exist. Or ND might be forced to join it in football to headline the conference and try to keep it alive.

"Why continue to reward them if they don't want to join the conference? They aren't the great and legendary ND anymore" I believe it was Michigan who coined the phrase "To h*ll with Notre Dame.................then jumped at the chance to lock them up to a 25 year contract.

Alright. I'm left wondering what in the world has happened to the glory days of 'old', when Michigan football and Big Ten football were the establishments of excellence... I'm sorry, but when the Big Ten is looking to gather teams from the other conferences to total 16 teams in all, I cannot fathom how it would ever work out positively. There's too much tradition at stake. I feel like an old fuddyduddy saying these things, and I'm not even 30! What in the..... P.S. - (Just to go along with my current, old-timer rant...) What the heck ever happened to playing football on grass?

It is time for the Big 10 to do something drastic. The SEC and PAC 10 will. This expansion is not about scheduling and what is best for the kids. It about $$$$. More money from the Big Ten Network in more homes in other states, more teams in BCS games, a championship game in December, and better odds of being in the National title game on a consistent basis. The Big 10 football conference has become irrelivant like ND football. It is time to make a splash.

Hee Hee!! Good riddence to Mizzou! They can have the Big 10! Here's your hat. Don't come begging to get back in.

The blurb from the source article: "A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska." The annarbor.com headline: "Report: Nebraska, Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Missouri will join Big Ten" 'expected to follow' was morphed in to 'will'. I'll believe this when I see it.

Not bad teams (not great, either - although Nebraska is on the way back), but 16 is way too many teams, imo. Take one, make a 12 team league and end it at that. I've always liked the rivalries in the B10 and would hate to see those broken up and/or watered down by rarely playing each other.

I must agree with others here, '..a source...', come on, must be a really slow news day. I would like to hear that Missouri only, really jumped to the Big Ten - end of story, everyone lives happily ever after.

Ugh. Another day, another media outlet claiming their "sources" tell them so, so, so, so, and so and so, are joining the Big Ten. Why does AnnArbor.com continue to link to all these stories? How about we let the process play out and report on it when it is FACT? This is getting ridiculous.

"A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation"... must be a done deal then. Just like in January of 2008, "ESPN is reporting from a reputable source that Les Myles is the next coach of the Michigan Wolverines football team"... yep those 'sources', though unknown amongst us, are always right!

I do not think that we will get 5 new teams. The next thing is that UM and MSU will be split into different divisions of the conference.

Again, I'm skeptical, but those would be the five if it's going to be five and Notre Dame doesn't want to be included.
