Rich Rodriguez and 'Shawshank Redemption,' Tate Forcier's move to Miami and NFL Draft possibilities

By Pete Bigelow

Thumbnail image for Rich-Rodriguez-032410.jpg

Does this man thrive on drama?

Remember when Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon defined Rich Rodriguez’s tenure with the Wolverines as “three years of turmoil” and said it “seems like it was one thing after another?”

He was right about those things, of course, and cited a need to reverse that helter-skelter momentum as one of the reasons he ultimately fired Rodriguez.

“Clearly, we need to put ourselves in position where all that is history,” Brandon said that day.

Whether he’s accomplished that goal, that’s a trickier question.

Rodriguez no longer works for Michigan, but he’s certainly not history. On the contrary, the school’s former coach is still finding himself amidst the “drama” he often derided.

This week, he compared his three-year tenure at Michigan to the excellent movie “Shawshank Redemption.”

“I almost felt like Andy Dufresne in the ‘Shawshank Redemption,’” Rodriguez told ESPN Radio host Colin Cowherd. “Went through 300 yards of the foulest smelling crap you can imagine. We were finally getting to the good part at the end - and we didn’t get a chance to do that. It was frustrating.”

On one hand, his intent is understandable.

Rodriguez described the frustration of laying a foundation over three excruciating seasons, but missing a chance to see the job to fruition. Michigan returns 20 starters next year.

On the other, comparing the job - his job - of rebuilding the Wolverines to crawling through three football fields worth of fecal matter is a sure-fire way to stir trouble, write headlines and create drama.

It would have been easy for Rodriguez to relay his frustrations without the egregious comparison.

But there he was, making a statement on his own free volition that landed him in yet another controversy.

If it happens once, it’s a chance. Twice, a coincidence. … Dozens of times? The reasonable conclusion is that Rodriguez not only doesn’t mind the drama, he actually thrives upon it.

Speaking of former Wolverines

Tate Forcier’s signing with the University of Miami seems, on the surface, to be a good fit for both parties.

The Hurricanes get a proven starting quarterback. Forcier get his transfer year to get his academic bearings, with an eye on competing for a starting job that will be vacated by Spencer Whipple entering 2012.

Perhaps, according to his dad, it’s a good fit for his personality.

“Some of the criticism he got in the past are from people who misunderstand him as cocky,” Mike Forcier told the Miami Herald.

“Really, all he has is a lot of swagger. I know the players at Miami are all about that. He’s just misunderstood. He’s confident he knows he can play. He’s played since he was a little baby. This is his dream.”

Forcier reminds me of Bernie Kosar, another Miami quarterback.

Kosar had a funky side-armed delivery that no aspiring QB would mimic, and Forcier is probably more mobile than the former Cleveland Brown.

But they’re similar in that they both made the most of average physical abilities and became proven winners for major college football programs.

And for Forcier, there’s more ahead.

Looking at the NFL Draft

Among the less-inflammatory portions of Rich Rodriguez’s appearance on Colin Cowherd’s radio show, the former coach discussed the NFL Draft prospects of Big Ten players.

“I thought J.J. Watt … was the most productive defensive lineman in the country,” Rodriguez said of the Wisconsin standout.

As for his own former players, Rodriguez noted he expects guard Steven Schilling will be a late-round pick and that right tackle Perry Dorrestein has a chance at being drafted.

Linebacker Jonas Mouton might have a chance too, but Rodriguez’s comment that, “unfortunately, we needed more guys to be up in that draft board and I still would be sitting that office,” rings true.

If Schilling is indeed the Wolverines’ only drafted player during the draft, which takes place April 28 to 30, it will mark the first time since 1994 that only one Michigan player is selected.

(Complete look at Michigan's NFL Draft history).

That year, Derrick Alexander was a first-round pick (29th overall) of the Cleveland Browns. In 1985, defensive end Kevin Brooks was the lone Wolverine drafted. He went 17th overall to the Dallas Cowboys.

Schilling won’t be a first-round pick, so in theory, this could be the Wolverines’ worst NFL Draft showing since zero players were picked in 1938.

RR is an incredibly delusional individual. One can only wonder how and why he was ever allowed anywhere near Ann Arbor in the first place. And, like a character in a Stephen King novel, he just won't go away. Too much band-width and not enough news?

Combine these facts with the high ratings of LC's last few recruiting classes, and this shows that the coaching was definitely lacking in the last 3 years. Barwis: Well, there's... there's a lot of hayfields up there. Rich Rod: One in particular. It's got a long rock wall with a big oak tree at the north end. It's like something out of a Robert Frost poem. It's where Bill Martin asked me to take the Michigan Coaching Job. We went there for a picnic and he asked and I said yes. Promise me, Barwis. If you ever get out... find that spot. At the base of that wall, you'll find a rock that has no earthly business in a Michigan hayfield. Piece of black, volcanic glass. There's something buried under it I want you to have. Barwis: What, Rich? What's buried under there? Rich Rod: [turns to walk away] You'll have to pry it up... to see. Rich Rod visited nearly a dozen banks in the Ann Arbor area that morning. All told, he blew town... with better than $2.5 million of Warden Brandon's money. Severance pay for 6 Big Ten Wins in 3 years. When I picture him heading south in his own car with the top down, it always makes me laugh. Rich Rodriguez... who crawled through a river of buckeye and came out clean on the other side. Rich Rodriguez... headed for the ACC.

The RichRod sycophants that are pointing to this year's NFL draft and trying to say this proves that the "cupboard was bare" are forgetting 2 things: 1. Ryan Mallet 2. Justin Boren One's is pretty much a lock as a 1st round draft pick and the other will end up getting selected in the first couple of days. Both were run off by the Hack. There was talent here when RichRod showed up, but he didn't know how to coach them. Frankly, he's proven he doesn't know how to coach period, at least not at the elite level. The mewling by some that he was going to lead us to crystal is ludicrous. His performance at Michigan was pathetic. Change has come to Michigan. Coach Hoke is leading the rennaissance of Michigan football. It's good to be a Wolverine.

Rich Rod thrives on the drama? Absolutely. It appeals to his narcissistic nature. Note that he always prefaces his dumb comments and excuses by saying 'this will sound self serving but...' or 'this sounds like an excuse but'....and then he goes on and on rambling self-serving excuses one after another after another. He is either the dumbest deposed ex coach in history not knowing that what he is saying constantly frames himself as a fool......., or he is an uncontrollable - self-serving narcissist who thrives on playing "the victim". My vote is a little of the former and a LOT of the later. It is ingrained in his subconscious at this point and would take a lot of therapy to change. No doubt that ADs and presidents of other universities take note of this narcissism and ad it to the tearing down of the Michigan program, NCAA rules violations etc. as black-marks on Rod... which will make it harder and harder and harder for him to find a quality HC job in the future. He simply does not know when to shut-up and say 'no comment'. Its all about poor ol' Rich Rod the victim. When will we stop hearing about Rich Rodriguez? From now until the next interview that the guy gives...you can count on that. Remember: Hoke is a good thing, maybe the best of things ....and like Michigan Football...no good thing ever dies. @don, Gotta love: 1) The lack of a single FACT in your posts 2) The dismissal of Rivals' rankings without any explanation or examples whatsoever. But let's follow the logic: If they were overrate kids, as you claim, they fooled everyone, not just Lloyd Carr. 3) You forgetting (ignoring?) that the team that lost to App State went 9-4, was ranked in the Top 25, had the #24-rated defense in the country, and beat #9-ranked Florida with Heisman Trophy winner Tebow at QB. Yes, App State was a bad game, but get over it. As for Toledo, there is no way that the same team that beat Wisconsin in 2008 should lose to Toledo in the same season. But, I must say, you have whatshisname's mantra down to a "T": Everything is Lloyd Carr's fault. 4) That the 2008 team had 7 returning starters from that #24 defense but that it fell to the 67th-rated defense in the nation. 5) 6-18 in the Big Ten; 0-12 against Big Ten teams with winning records in the conference; 1-13 against MSU/OSU/PSU/Iowa/Wisky; 2-11 against teams that were in the Top 25 at the time the game was played; winless against teams that finished the season in the Top 25; from 24th in the nation in defense in 2007 (Carr's last year), to 67th in 2008, to 84th in 2009, to 110/120 teams in 2010; Worst bowl loss in Michigan history; 1st NCAA probation in Michigan history--yes, somehow this was all the fault of the guy who hasn't coached a game in three years. These, Don, are facts, and they are irrefutable. But I can't wait to hear from the man-crush folks after the 2011 season is over. If the Wolverines do well, they's give whathisname all the credit. But if he does poorly (say, he goes 3-9 in his first year like whatshisname did) they'll blame Hoke. Can I sign you up now for that reaction? Good Night and Good Luck

Edward R Murrow's Ghost: you cannot be serious. Taking high school rankings and saying that 4-5 yrs later the coaches did not coach this kids. Get serious. These were overrated kids who were not typical of the talent normally recruited to M. That is why there were not on the field before RR arrived and why they did not win when he was here & why they will not play in the NFL. No one questions whether RR and staff know how to coach. Pitt, Indiana and others have hired his staff members---apparently other BCS schools think these guys know something!! Former D coordinator Robinson coached two defense's that won super bowls & won several Rose Bowls and comes with a resume much brighter than the new D coordinator. You need talent to win. The talent RR had were all his recruits the last two yrs that his staff recruited. He inherited a bare cupboard who could not beat App State or Toledo. Enough said?

It's demeaning to the proud spirit of Michigan football for him to compare his experience at Michigan with an activity so loathsome as slogging through a cesspool. Those words were not disclosed only to his immediate family, nor his best buds. They were broadcast to the airwaves-- AKA the world--for goodness sake!!! tater's logic: those of us who think the previous coach was incompetent and a cheater (which are demonstrable and irrefutable facts) somehow are harming the current coach. Gee, I guess that those who hated Lloyd Carr to the point that he was booed for the last several years of his tenure did real harm to the program, too?? And that their continuing to misrepresent his record and to exaggerate wildly its problems continue to do so? As for the interviews and the "cycle", both would end were whatshiname to state the obvious: that he failed as head coach while at Michigan and that his failures were his own--not Lloyd Carr's, not the Freep's, not the fans'. His failures were HIS failures. Were he to do that just ONCE, that would be the end of the show. It would help his job prospects. It would get his record of failure out of the news. But narcissists never admit failure, so the soap opera will continue. Good Night and Good Luck

There is one element here that the whiners and moaners should understand. I feel that it is so important that I will give it its own white space for all of you: Every time someone keeps the negativity surrounding RR alive, they are hurting the program. "Journalists" and "fans" may think that they are doing Brady Hoke a favor by heaping their rubbish on RR, but they really aren't. All they are doing is making it look like everyone in Ann Arbor is a hateful piece of crap who will turn on "his" team if things aren't going well. Recruits and their parents read articles about the University of Michigan. If I was a parent, I don't know if I would want my son to play for a program where the fans and media turn on players and coaches in a heartbeat. I would want my son to go to a school where everyone is on the same page: where everyone is pulling in the right direction. Whining about a coach who is no longer here does not qualify. Brady Hoke will succeed or fail on his own merits. He has been given a fully-stocked cupboard on offense, and a young defense that a coordinator like Mattison should be able to turn into an average one this year. Last year, something like eight freshmen played on defense alone. This year, the personnel situation is different; I don't really see any true freshmen getting much playing time, and I don't see any redshirt freshmen starting. This team now has the personnel to do a lot of damage. What it needs is to be fully supported by a positive fan base. And it doesn't need any of RR's recruits to get sick of the negativity being heaped on him and deciding to quit. So, whiners and complainers, if you really like Michigan and want them to do well, just be positive. There is no "RR vs Hoke;" there is just a program trying to win football games. Those who moan about RR remind me of ignorant hillbillies still fighting the Civil War. Sadly, though, all any of you are doing by whining is making

Every "journalist" who interviews RR is trying to be "that guy" who gets RR to "break kayfabe" and tell everyone how he really feels about his treatment at Michigan. I see a pattern developing here. Every time an RR interview is published, someone in Ann Arbor finds an excuse to whine, moan, and become indignant about it. If anyone here, including the writer of this article, had been treated like RR was and had a chance to "spill his guts" in front of a national audience, they would have said a lot more than RR has. So, please, commenters and writers looking for an excuse to whine and moan about RR, as if what RR says now will "justify" his firing: just give it a rest. David Brandon is an incompetent, bumbling fool who thinks he is throwing his weight around and padding his resume for his political ambitions. The fact that all he really did was give in to the element that has been sabotaging the program behind the scenes for the last three years is an irony that he will never understand. Bo was extremely angry at Illinois for firing Gary Moeller after three years with a 6-34-3 record, because he believed that Moeller should have had five years to get the job done. It's sad that someone whose claim of Bo as a mentor was a great part of his resume would make a decision that is the opposite of what Bo would have done. It's also sad that Brandon, instead of telling the Carr-tel to grow up, shut up, and either support the head coach or leave, as Bo would have, simply gave into their wishes. Anyway, all I am really seeing here is that RR's critics, by dumping on him as they are now, are not following the standards they seem to think RR should follow. They think they should be able to whine and moan about RR all they want, but that RR shouldn't have the right to fully disclose the details of the treatment he recieved by the Carr-tel and by David "Barney Fife" Brandon. I hope RR "tells all&quot

Wolverines eligible for the NFL draft this year were in the 2006 recruiting class (red-shirt seniors) or the 2007 recruiting class (4th year seniors) Rivals.com rated the 2006 class #13 and the 2007 class #12. So one cannot make the reasonable argument that there was little or no talent in those classes. But high school football players become NFL-caliber football players due to the COACHING they receive. Lloyd Carr has not spent a day coaching UM football players in more than three years, and he was phenomenally successful at creating NFL players when he did coach. The recruiting classes of 2006 and 2007 have had THREE years with whatshisname--THREE years conditioning and weight training; THREE years of spring practice; THREE years of fall camp; THREE years of fall football seasons. If in those THREE years this football program produced the fewest NFL prospects in a generation out of two highly ranked recruiting classes, the only person who can be blamed for that debacle is the immediate past so-called "coaching" staff. "So-called" because, given the small number of likely NFL draftees, is seems a fair conclusion that little or no coaching has gone on here for three years. Michigan went through 300 yards of the foulest smelling crap you can imagine. Then they Fired RR. End of Story.

RR: i think he is mixing up his movie metaphor's. i think he meant to say that he felt like Harold Hill in the first half of the Music Man while he was at Michigan. TF: Good luck in Miami, but if you think there were temptations in Ann Arbor.....

The more RR talks the more he looks like he is unable to lead a program. He comes across as a big whiner. I still stick to the point what was he trying to rebuild? It is his fault of blowing up the UM program and trying to implement a Big East program of undersized football players. He will never take the blame for what he did in 3 years.

Just another piece of evidence to prove that whatshisname is a narcissist who accepts no blame whatsoever for his three year disaster. Whatshisname wasn't Andy Dufresne. He was Warden Norton. And it was the entire Michigan Football Family (sans tater, theo, Lorraine, et. al...) who got dragged through that pipe. Good Night and Good Lucck

continually reading about whatshisname week after week is like "going through 300 yards of the foulest smelling crap you can imagine." ... only here it happens over and over again. It's like Shawshank Redemption and Groundhog Day combined.

The Shadow It's dead of winter, In the gloom a bell rings. Not fit for peasants, let alone Kings. At Stadium and Main, they gather, they meet. Onlookers stop, they block the street. From the depths he comes, beaten, weak. "Fear not," he says. "I've turned my cheek." "To gain The Crystal, much was needed. Sadly, friends, my words weren't heeded." Thou speak of Bo's, thou doth seek Rose. Blue's fate now? Only The Shadow knows... Epilogue In 2014 a tattered letter was uncovered at Ann Arbor Golf & Outing by bright young archaeologist Terry Star21 Jr. Oh, the night. ...shall this night not amongst us relent...
