If the Michigan football team spent some of its off-week practice time preparing for Penn State quarterback Rob Bolden, it may have been in vain.

Bolden was injured midway through the second quarter of the Nittany Lions' 33-21 win at Minnesota on Saturday. He was replaced by third-stringer Matt McGloin, who threw two touchdown passes.

According to an Associated Press report, Penn State coach Joe Paterno said Bolden had trouble remembering some details and that he was held out as a precaution.

Quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno said he wasn't sure if Bolden actually sustained a concussion, but said he thought Bolden looked coherent after getting hurt.

It's not clear whether he'll play against Michigan next week, but Bolden's teammates said they believed he'd be ready.

"It's disappointing for him, but he'll be back next week," running back Evan Royster said.

Bolden had only two scoring passes and six interceptions in the previous five games, but he started strong against the Gophers by going 11 for 13 for 130 yards and a touchdown.

McGloin was summoned ahead of listed backup Kevin Newsome, who took a few snaps in the second half but did not throw a pass.

BIG TEN ROUNDUP (Click on the score for complete story)

Michigan State 35, Northwestern 27: B.J. Cunningham hauled in a deflected pass for the go-ahead touchdown with two minutes remaining as No. 8 Michigan State rallied to win at Northwestern. Kirk Cousins converted 29 of 43 passes for 329 yards and three touchdowns for the Spartans (8-0, 4-0 Big Ten), who overcame a 17-0 first-half deficit to win in head coach Mark Dantonio's return to the sideline for the first time he suffered a mild heart attack hours after the September 18 game against Notre Dame. Michigan State, which played outside its home state for the first time this season, is off to its best start in 44 years when the program opened 9-0. Quarterback Dan Persa ran for three touchdowns for the Wildcats (5-2, 1-2).

(Combined with Ohio State's win over Purdue and Wisconsin's win at Iowa, Michigan State is the lone unbeaten team in the conference. See complete Spartan coverage at MLive.com.)

Wisconsin 31, Iowa 30: Montee Ball's touchdown with 1:06 left capped a game-winning drive that saw Wisconsin convert two fourth downs, including one on a fake punt, and lifted the 10th-ranked Badgers to a road win. Scott Tolzien threw for 205 yards and a touchdown, and rebounded from a fourth-quarter interception and John Clay ran for 91 yards and two scores for the Badgers (7-1, 3-1). Ricky Stanzi passed for 258 yards and three touchdowns for the Hawkeyes (5-2, 2-1), who had won their last three and came up short on their final possession. Iowa also had an extra point blocked in the first quarter.

Ohio State 49, Purdue 0: Dan Herron set the tone with a 10-yard touchdown run on the first series and Terrelle Pryor threw for 270 yards with three scores for No. 11 Ohio State. Herron carried on all five plays of the first scoring drive, and finished with 74 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries for the Buckeyes (7-1, 3-1 Big Ten), who were the top-ranked team in the nation before last Saturday's loss to Wisconsin. Pryor completed 16-of-22 passes with a pair of interceptions while playing into the third quarter. Dane Sanzenbacher, DeVier Posey and Corey Brown each caught a touchdown pass in the victory. Purdue (4-3, 2-1) never threatened the Ohio State defense, managing just 118 total yards. Its deepest penetration offensively was the Ohio State 39-yard-line late in the fourth quarter.

Illinois 43, Indiana 13: Nathan Scheelhaase completed 13 of 21 passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Fighting Illini to a home win. Mikel Leshoure led the Illinois (4-3, 2-2) ground attack with 77 yards and a touchdown. Ben Chappell threw three interceptions -- two of them returned for touchdowns -- for Indiana (4-3, 0-3).

PU MSU, I went to Gatorsports.comand found some of this information, the rest I surfed through the web on college sites for the information. I hope I helped a little. If you find anything different, please post it because I was having this discussion with BAMA fan. Florida and Air Force have the most true Freshmen in the NCAA that play. (17) They actually start 5 a piece but along with special teams, they have 17 true freshmen playing each game. Auburn has 15, Vandy has 13 and Tennessee has 16. Auburn (starts) true freshmen players at 5 Tennessee 5 (3 on the o-line) Florida 5 Air Force 4 Vandy at 4

Should finish 7-5 or 8-4. Basically what I predicted when the season started. The team graduates 4 starters total. 10-2 next year is a reasonable expectation. Since the first year RR came to town the team has improved. (Not too hard to do with such a bad start.) Either way, I cannot support everyone asking RR to be fired when the team is improving. They have won the games they should have and lost to teams better than them. Challenge for all: Show me a younger team with a better record. Go Blue.

I vote that we adopt the old Northwestern cheer:. "Don't you worry, don't you fuss, one day you're gonna work for us". Looks like its all we've got left. A sad statement on many levels.................

The knee pads are there but are extremely small. Teams use the short pants to give players more flexibility and to be more mobile. The knee pads actually do nothing to preserve you from injury but the NCAA still insists that it be part of the uniform. (just like the tailbone pads.) I don't see another win on the schedule. Purdue was a easy win earlier this season until they used their back-up QB who runs a 4.4 and who can pass admirably. They also get good pressure with their D-line and the blue-print is set how to beat us already. (with DR)

Did anyone else notice McGloin's lack of knee pads, and that his pants are up above his knees?

After this season is over, I believe it will be high time to hire a head coach, and tell Rich Rodriguez that he has been a pretty good offensive coordinator and can remain at that position if he wants. I heard something this week along the lines of RR having as many Big Ten wins in Michigan Stadium as coach Dantonio. That's unacceptable, and there needs to be a shake-up.

Hey. Look on the bright side. Michigan was undefeated this Saturday, and there haven't been any new NCAA sanctions.

I'm not one of these people who thinks a coach has to win championships every year or they should be fired. That would be unrealistic for anyone to achieve. I do believe, though, that top-tier programs should be competitive year-in and year-out, even in down years. I see Michigan of the 41 years prior to RR's arrival as a team that competed against top-tier teams and won several B10 championships and went to several top bowl games, winning their share of them. Even in Lloyd's last season they went 9-4 and won a New Year's day Bowl. Teams that can remain at the top have a shot every year of going all the way...see UM in 2006 when they went 11-2 and were within three points on the road against OSU of playing for it all. However, after what RR has done in his first two years at Michigan, getting the program back to where it was will not be good enough. He now must make us BETTER than what we were, which would be an average of 10 wins per year and beating OSU regularly. Based on his 18 year coaching record, in which he has had 4 10+ win seasons and multiple middling and losing records, I don't see it happening. Time will tell, but my personal opinion is that every year RR remains at Michigan is another year we will be set back. Again, I don't expect championships every year, but based on the expectations RR brought with him and what has occurred over the past 2+ seasons (0-3 vs. MSU) to supposedly make us BETTER, that's almost what has to happen to deem his career a success at Michigan moving forward.

After watching a truly great Big 10 game in Wisconsin at Iowa, I can only conclude that it was the state of the art in Big 10 football today. Truly the best among the best. Meanwhile, sadly, I have to conclude that Michigan is nowhere near, repeat...nowhere near... that level of play. At one point my thought was that Michigan plays an inferior brand, a losing brand, of football in the Big 10. Michigan is now a decade away from seriously competing again in Big 10 football. Michigan over the last 5.5 years is now # 6 in Big 10 wins. Pathetic.

Question crossed my mind while reading article as to whether writer garbled the message, so that it should have read, "PS Coach Joe Paterno said he had trouble remembering the details as to whether Quarterback Bolden remembered details....."

After watching these games, Mich's best chance for one more win this season is with Purdue. Illinois destroyed Indiana, while Mich struggled to beat Indiana. Illinois is much tougher than people think and they beat PSU a couple of weeks ago. PSU has lost some tough games, but they've beaten the teams they should beat. They should beat Mich at a night game in State College. Few teams can win on the road at PSU at night. Wi and OSU will beat Mich hands down. That will mean another 2-6 Big Ten season. So, let's hope Mich can become "champion of Indiana" by beating Purdue. I am certain some people will see this result as "progress", with Michigan possibly going to a bowl. I see it as bottom tier Big Ten performance.
