San Diego State president on Brady Hoke: 'I wish him well'

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Michigan was always Brady Hoke's goal, San Diego State President Stephen Weber said in an interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune.

So Weber wasn't surprised when Hoke left the San Diego head football coach's job to fill Michigan's opening.

“I was the first one of us who got to talk with him (in 2008) and it was a good conversation,” Weber told the Union-Tribune. “It was an honest one and from the beginning he said he wanted to end up at Michigan. Neither of us thought it would happen in two years.”

After Hoke took the Michigan job, Weber said he called him. "I just wish himn well," Weber said.

What? TF was sent home from Jax BEFORE the Gator Bowl. BH can't be held responsible for things that happened on your guy's watch. "Turn Tate around?" Only Mr. Forcier is responsible for himself. Maybe the WCiMFH should have had some of those "extra eyes" checking up on TF's progress in class? Maybe I'm asking the wrong questions. I ask you about defense and special teams and all I get is something about a future RB recruit. I understand not wanting to talk about so why do you guys continue to bring it up. Puffffff! Look, he's gone! TiM Go Blue!

That's right, Tate Forcier is gone.

And, who was the coach when Tate was "lost'?

Well, we KNOW who didn't, don't we?

Brady Hoke, you see when Brady came on board it wasn't to late to turn Tate around had Brady set his mind to it in fact most coaches spend a fair amount of time keeping players in line such as grades. Maybe Brady didn't think Tate was worth it I don't know. I do know that most of the most valuable players on teams around the country don't leave because of grades. Now some like yourself might argue that young Mr Tate was not a valualble asset however, I really think we could have used Tate this coming season and I'll bet that there will be games when Brady thinks the same thing oh well, spilt milk.

lake guy What makes you think the defense or special teams were heading in the right direction after 3 years? Which defensive players were much better at the end of the season based on the last three games of the year? Can you at least acknowledge that many people didn't see enough (any) improvement in the kicking game or defense to continue on the same track? Can you agree with that?

PortageLkBlu

3 , 5, and 7 wins, in 3 years I would call that improvement with some solid talent coming in including a solid running back prospect. Ya, I can acknowledge that. I will also say that I think losing Tate was a blow to this years season of course just like Brady Hoke that remains to be seen.

That was a very professional conduct by the President of San Diego State. Very sportsmanlike. Suprising to still see RR fans being negative on a UM program that lost all negativity (and all the baggage that comes with it) with RR's departure. If you lose a good coach, you feel sad and down, with RR, WVU fans were angry and mad because they were betrayed by a coach who made believe that his alma mater was a destination job 4 months earlier. RR was sleazy and he brought it to UM for three losing seasons full of negativity. The moment Hoke was hired, it was all positive, former players and coaches all approved of the new management. Possitivity and the positive vibes will create a very good program.

Lost all negativity? Do you not read the comments around here? People can't stop bashing Rich Rod every chance they get. That's called "negativity".

I think the President is happy for Hoke--showing a lot of faith in him and reflecting on the type of relationship that they must have had. What nice comments. Sure contrasts with the AD's comments from LSU, WVU, etc. Weber is really positive in his comments.

Just suggesting: what I did was to post on the forum of Aztec fans commenting on Hoke's departure from their program. I assured them that we are sympathetic for their loss even though it's our gain. I complimented SDSU's president for his classy attitude about Hoke's leaving them. I also reminded the Aztec fans that their school gets a much bigger than normal payment for the game they'll play at Michigan Stadium and offered my "welcome." I am sincere about this but I (like many others) don't ever want to be in the situation we were in vis a vis West Virginia when the Guy Before left WV for Michigan.

Aren't you the gentleman or lady? And if you are did you do the same for the W. Virginia fans? Apparently the W. Virginia fans were the ones that were offended not the San Diego fans.

I agree - President Weber is a class act. How do you stand between someone and their dream opportunity. I think we have great players - but with better coaching - I think they are ready to make a move - #GoBlue. Hoke will be fantastic.

Yeah Protage, just like how RR whined, moaned and complained about how Carr "left the cupboard bare." You RR apologists never cease to amaze me with the mental gymnastics that you go through to make excuses for your boy.

PortageLkBlu

Ya we have some outstanding players thanks to RR and to say now that we have a coach that can coach em is a cop-out excuse for having fired the man that brought those kids here. Don't forget that any success Brady has this year will be due to the kids RR brought in on the other hand the failures will be because Brady didn't coach em up. Come on boys and girls ya can't have it both ways.

@PortageBlue: What's your damage, Bro? You're spoiling this good time for yourself alone. What did you lose other than an "argument" which we all participated in while the Michigan Admins ignored us all? You - unlike many supporters of the Guy Before - refrained from pouting and making up daily rhymes of low quality. You've had class and smarts in some of your posts. Don't spoil your own record and regard by hanging on to a dead wish. I don't believe in stepping on anyone who's down. RR had a big jolt when he got fired and that's enough of that song. By bringing up "what might have been" - you can see yourself that it only brings out the critics again to defend their "victory" (which they had nothing to do with). Remember their "other victory" (Harbaugh or Miles) never even came close to happening. Join the rest of us: we're back to singing the Victors again! It feels GOOD!

PortageLkBlu

Fri, Jan 28, 2011 : 3:44 p.m.

Oh I sing the Victors have for 60 years I'm just not singing the praises of this 3rd coach in 4yrs until he proves to me on the field what he can produce as our head coach. I don't like all this saber rattling, chest thumping and bragging about average prospects that he has personally recruited, I do know we lost D hart and Tate two potential game breakers on any team and you tell me who else we lost you seem quite pleased with all this. I think DB hired Hoke to appease the fans and alum and I don't always think this gets the best results. I think Brady will probably get us back to where LLoyd was both in wins and unfortunately style of play. I think we took a step backward to appease the fan base which includes alumni and what I don't think is that we will become a national contender, not with Brady Holk but, I will support him I have all the other coaches and I say that with pride.

PortageLkBlu

Fri, Jan 28, 2011 : 1:16 a.m.

"what's your damage bro" I don't know dude except I don't think Brady Hoke is the second coming of Christ in fact, I think we, settled for Brady Hoke. RR just like LLoyd , Gary and Bo was a coach at Mich and I will speak of him with class because unlike you I thought he was going to turn this program into a national contender regardless of the first 3 years and that is my view. Also, I hope your prepared for some real disappointments with Brady Hoke. Notice I didn't say he can't win given time I said prepare yourself because just like RR I think Brady needs 3-5 years to turn this thing around. Now that Bro. is what I think.

Hey Portage, I live in San Diego and please don't compare us to people from W. Virginia, it's a whole different world my friend. We have better things to do out here than act like they do. You might want to consider that before you give Mission any grief. Trust me, I have many SDSU fans and they were not happy about losing Hoke, you can think whatever you want though. MissionBrazil is a legend w/his comments, thank you. And another thing, I'll tell you what, let's make a trade, we'll give WVU both RR and Beilein back and what to do we want in return, wait for it...............................absolutely nothing!!!!!!

Hey Mick, I also live in Ca. and why would I compare us to people in W. Virginia it's a different state but in answer to your slight we in California are no better than anyone in W. Virginia or Michigan and that is a fact. Oh and by the way, never heard of Brazil except for some silly comments on this site. As far as Calif. being a differant world you got that right dude.

Your right most people here recognize classy people. Just like most people recognize a proven coach which is why most folks reserve an opinion on Brady Hoke until he proves himself in big time college ball. You see whether you or others like it or not RR had proven himself to be a solid coach in big time college football, Mich. just ran out of patience because they only got 7 wins last year. I believe had RR gotten 8 wins and won the bowl game he would be our coach but changing the whole style of play was going to require patience which Mich. fans have proved they don't have so with that said, I wish Brady luck and fortitude.

There ya go son ya answered your own question which brings into question the attitude from San diego, when Hoke left, not exactly mourning him are they?

Portage, expanding your thinking is one thing, but you trying to rewrite history through your opinion is another. Most of us would like to forget the past & move on and enjoy this new era at UM, however I would be happy to refresh your memory of the FACTS and events that took place leading up to and after RR leaving WVU and show why WVU was angry. I can assure you the facts and court records show that it was not because they thought they were losing a good coach.

Far cry from the last time we hired a coach from another school. That can be looked at different ways like, maybe, just maybe West Virginia was really so angry because they were losing a coach that had brought them so much success and it was the second time they felt that Mich. had raided their pantry. Try to expand your thinking kids.

Really glad we got Hoke and Weber shows a lot of class, good on him. Hoke and harbaugh ran similar offensive systems in 2010 and combined Bowl scores, drum roll please................ 75 to 26 for an average of 37.5 to 13, hmm, I think I'll take that all day long. In fact, I would love a team that during a season would avg winning by 37-13. can you say top 5 program, especially one at U-M, our name has a lot of cache because "This is Michigan for God's Sake", Go Blue!!!

There is no story here. Stephen Weber knew Hoke would leave eventually -- either Michigan or some other major school. Lower tier schools are stepping stones for good coaches to advance.

A class act and I agree its a far cry from the last coach that was hired. The whole school was mad and ended up hateing his guts. I don't know is it just me or are the rest of the Michigan fans as excited as I am about the hiring of Brady Hoke. I can't get whats happening with his staff and the players out of my head. Everything I hear is team oriented and for the players, awesome. Tell me you felt this good when RR was there, I didn't! Michigan excitment is back I can't wait.
