Michigan offensive coordinator Calvin Magee mum on South Florida interest

By Dave Birkett

Michigan offensive coordinator Calvin Magee declined comment on whether he’s interested in the South Florida job when reached in Orlando at the American Football Coaches Association convention today.

Magee, who spent 5 years at South Florida and worked on the Bulls’ first staff in 1996, has been prominently mentioned as a replacement for Jim Leavitt, who was fired last week.

ESPN The Magazine’s Bruce Feldman tweeted Monday that sources said Magee “is interviewing for the UCF hc job.”

“I’m not commenting on any of that,” said Magee, Michigan’s offensive coordinator the last 2 years.

The Wolverines finished third in the Big Ten in scoring offense last year (29.5 points per game) after ranking last (20.2) in 2008, but struggled down the stretch. Michigan lost its last 5 games to miss out on a bowl for the second straight year and was held to 13 points or fewer 3 times.

According to various reports, East Carolina coach Skip Holtz, former South Florida assistant Dan McCarney, Temple coach Al Golden and ex-Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer also are candidates for the South Florida job.

It appears that Fullmer would have the inside track to this position, followed by Holtz, Golden and Magee. It's not unusual for an assistant coach to desire a head coaching position, and South Florida would be a great job for Magee. He appears happy here, despite the offense critics, and I am glad that he announced earlier this week, he was contacted by them. It would be a big loss by us, and the timing couldn't be worse.

I really don't care what he does as long as MICHIGAN wins more than FIVE games next season. And by the way,if he is not talking than he probably is trying to get the job!If he was committed to Michigan then he would say he is committed to Michigan!!RR better get his house in order before the season starts. We don't need anymore distractions before, during,or after the season!!The coaches, players and everyone involved with the program should be FOCUSED on improving the program,PERIOD!!Nothing else matters as far as I am concerned.Hopefully RR realizes this too.GO BLUE!!!

azwolverine, Don't you dare make historical references or state facts which point to the hiring of RR as a mistake! Check that sh*t at the door, grab a straw, and sip away on the RR Kooooooooool Aid. Then, assume the fetal position on the floor and repeat the following over and over, "But he needs more time, he needs more time, he needs more time! He needs his players to fit the beloved spread, he needs his playersj to fit the beloved spread, he needs his players to fit the beloved spread! Lloyd left the cupboard bare, Lloyd left the cupboard bare, Lloyd left the cupboard bare! Sluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurp! Ah, that's some darn gooooooood Kooooooooooooooool Aid!

I would like to see RR confirm the ignorance of "RR haters" by winning some damn games for Michigan. I don't care what he did at WV, just like what Callahan did for the Raiders and Weiss did with the Patriots amounted to a hill of beans for the Cornhuskers and Fighting Irish, respectively.

Tater is always good for a laugh.. but that's about it. If Magee leaves for SF, will he charge racism against Michigan as he did against West Virginia??????????

I love Spartan logic (I know, oxymoron). Somehow, only in East Lansing is advancing from a coordinators position to the Head Coaching job an "exodus". It ain't easy being green.

I always wonder what Calvin Magee did, since Rich Rod calls the plays and I am sure he makes the gameplan also so what exactly does Calvin Magee do for us he doesn't coach any position either.
