Tamani Carter, 1st player to commit to Brady Hoke at Michigan, leaves program

Redshirt freshman defensive back Tamani Carter, the first player to commit to the Brady Hoke Era, has left the Michigan football team.

Hoke announced the move Sunday at the team's media day at Schembechler Hall. He did not provide a reason for the departure.

"He's a great young man," Hoke said. "But, he decided to leave, and I'll leave it at that."

Carter, a Pickerington, Ohio, native, committed to the Wolverines just nine days after Hoke was hired to replace Rich Rodriguez last year. He was Hoke's first pledge.

He redshirted last season, and was not expected to see much time on defense this year after Michigan's secondary lost only one defensive back (Troy Woolfolk) from its two-deep roster.

Even in nickel packages, which use an extra defensive back, Michigan returns junior Courtney Avery and sophomores Raymon Taylor and Delonte Hollowell.

Carter is the second defensive back to leave Michigan this summer, joining junior Terrence Talbott. Neither was expected to play a significant role on defense.
