Tate Forcier misses most of today's practice, plus more Michigan football notes

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Brent Yarina of the Big Ten Network spent Friday morning at Michigan football practice. Among his observations: Quarterback Tate Forcier missed "most of the day" for reasons either unknown or not disclosed.

Yarina writes that true freshman Devin Gardner looked like the "real deal" and that Denard Robinson appeared to have tremendously improved as a passer.

Here's the rest of his thoughts on the Wolverines today on his Big Ten Network blog.

Talking about wheels falling off the bus... we're running out of wheels.

I think I'll wait for the season to start rather than worry about a lot of nothing. Remember boys and girls, no news is no news.

Tate don't sit the bench, he'll transfer and win the Heisman in 3 years.

Tater - don't you think Troy Woolfolk is there more than any of us?

I think it's time to develope the RBs because our QB situation may be in trouble. I still believe Woolfolk should've shut his trap publicly and spoke to Tate, face to face!

Geez, hard to look at Tate's absence as not a problem. If due to injury it is either he is injury prone and to be protected, or not toughing it out to win the support of the team after being called out by Woolfolk for lack of summer effort. I hope it is neither. As for Gardner, please burn that red shirt and rush him to service if by the end of the year he is our best chance to beat Ohio State. I will take losses early if we get the GAME!

By the way, Gardner is definitely the man, and will be the legitimate starter out of these three QB's down the road. He's got the tools...let's just hope he doesn't have to be rushed into service this season.

Wolverine318, If 8-4 is all it takes to make you happy as a UM fan, then your expectations are far too low. This is Michigan, the Leaders and the Best, not MSU. 8-4 may save RR's job, but until we beat OSU and start competing for BCS bowls and NCs, which he was brought in here to do, 8-4 won't and shouldn't silence the critics. When Bo, Moeller, or Lloyd went 8-4, that was considered a poor season. Why have things changed to the point that 8-4 is now a huge success? In my opinion, it hasn't. 8-4 this season is the bare minimum, just like it always is at Michigan. Like Bo always said, the expectation isn't for the player, it's for the position...and in this case, the position is coach. Get it done...and imo, 8-4 three years into the job isn't quite getting it done.

I like Tate a lot, but he is just not strong enough or physical enough to be effective for an entire season. I hope they can keep the red shirt on DG, but one serious injury will change all of that if he is developing the way they say he is.

There's a lot of practice ahead of the team but the writing may be on the wall for Tate. He was the only positive weapon we had last year for our offense though he had ball security issues. I think Tate is better for the team and if Denard wins the job it will be because of his speed. And this will make us one dimentional because of his lack of accuracy and quickness to leave the pocket. Hopefully, he's improved dramatically but I don't believe he's the leader that Tate is. Step your game up Tate because we won't win without you!

Improvements by Shoelace and Gardner are welcome, but I'll believe it when I see it. Tate developed ball security issues, but I believe he and the offense saw that they had to take gambles to score every possession just to stay in the games as each second half the other teams scored at will. Add Tate's own shoulder injury early in the season to injuries at center, tailback, and receiver and it's astonishing that Michigan was as high a ranked scoring team as they were. Tate showed a poise and awareness at QB that DR was not even close to so it would be surprising if DR advanced that much. Still, sounds like something is afoot.

A bit disingenuous to not include all of the facts of the story: Twitter From Grocklein - @BTNBrentsBlog How has Forcier looked? It's way early, but it almost sounds like he's slipping down the depth chart. From BTNBrentsBlog - @grocklein He was banged up today. But emergence of Gardner and Denard's improved passing don't help.

All the tweet said Tate was banged up. How is this contraversial again? Oh thats right, the RR haters will blame the weather and the economy on Rich. I cannot wait till we go at least 8-4 and crush little brother and shut up the Rich Rod haters.

Yarina responded to a question about Tate on his twitter by saying "He was banged up today." Not so mysterious after all.

hmmm maybe tate is realizing that you can't miss practices and not put in the hard work to be the staring qb?

Hmmm maybe Tate is looking at the fact his playing time will diminish and starting to think about options.
