'Ticked' Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez discusses the Wolverines' 37-7 loss to Ohio State

By Jeff Arnold

After the Michigan football team suffered its seventh straight loss to rival Ohio State, Wolverines' third-year coach Rich Rodriguez described his state of mind as being "ticked" and side-stepped questions about his job security.

With Saturday's loss, Michigan dropped to 6-18 against Big Ten teams, including an 0-for-11 mark against conference teams with winning records, during Rodriguez's tenure.

Ultimate test: Michigan vs WVU in the Fire/Don't Fire RR Bowl. I'd guess we'd get thumped by a good 21 points. There would be our proof that there has not been progress and we cut our losses.

Don't you dare try and send this guy back to WV. WVU wouldn't accept him if he coached for free, although I doubt he'd ever coach for less that a few million a year. He's really full of himself. When he left WVU, it was all smiles and a "see what you guys lost" attitude from RR. He really thought he'd pulled the wool over us hillbillies. Then came the lawsuits, then the losing seasons. Now the embarrassment of having to face the very same people who touted him as the person that would save UM football. WV folk are fair, hard working people. They trust people until they have reason not to. Many of you should review the way WV feels about this guy, and put a little more faith in the way they feel about him. RR is not a West Virginian any more. And that is saying mountains about this guy. I wouldn't worry too much about RR. Some MAC school will pick him up since he seems to do well against their type of competition. I don't think it will be any school in WV, though.

GoblueinNE_PA - "Now RichRod on the other hand, took a program that hadn't had a losing season in 40 years and had went 9-4 the season before he arrived and immediately drove them into the ditch. I'm trying to think of a comparable situation in sports history and I just can't come up with anything". one situation comes to mind... Gerry Faust at ND. Before him Dan Devine was their coach and before him Ara P. Ara P. was 95-17-4 in 11 seasons with 2 natl. cahmpionships... Devine went 8-3, 9-3, 11-1 (natl. championship), 9-3, 7-4, and 9-2-1. They had a winning tradition and 3 championships right before Faust. Then Faust went 5-6, 6-4-1, 7-5, 7-5, and 5-6. He was the "John Cooper" at ND; or should I say the "RR" at ND?

Offense did not play well, the play calling was there. Roy Roundtree could not catch a cold that day. Fumbles do not help. Keep Rich Rod, fire the defensive coordinator. It was a bad day to have a bad day. I personally like Rich, but it all boils down to business. $$$ It's easy to be a critic, I personally think whom ever took over Carr's job would have been in the same boat. As hard as it was watching a bad loss, the man deserves one more year. That's my two cents.

Man up, Rodriguez. No, the worst is NOT behind you. Based on your performance, happy days are nowhere in your future. If you were on the tenure track, performance thus far would lead to a review that would end in denial of tenure. Take a good look at your program, from recruiting, to your coaching staff, to the alumni support, to the needs of the students. You're not bringing in the wins. Brace yourself, man. I wouldn't be surprised to hear, "You're fired."

We cannot compare RR with LC. LC was Gary M's DC, he had a part in building the teams, he knew the system, so when GM had to step down and LC became HC, nothing changed but the coach(es), LC inherited a very strong program, and did not have to rebuild anything, just maintain. In RR's case, when LC retired, thee UM admins decided to change the philosophy of UM football and hired RR. This was the first time in UM history that they completely rebuilt their system, so yes, it will take a little longer than just changing coaches, changing coaches isn't necessarily rebuilding, rebuilding requires demo (the 1st yr), so all the coach comparisons are useless. 7-5 is par for this young team, 3 of their 5 losses were to experience top 10 teams, 1 to a team (Iowa) that was in the top 20 at the time, and the last to a team (PSU) that was more experienced, that they should have been able to beat. After a rough rebuild period, M is back on track. Look at all the teams above, most were about 7-5 when they were young. LC's last strong class (Hart, Henne and co.) was 7-5 their sophmore years. To make a coach change now would not be the best move regardless of how much you hate RR, or how good of a coach JH might be, it's what it will do to the program, the kids ( the players ), and the recruits. RR endured laying the new ground work for UM, they should at least let him have the fruits of his labor, whatever it may be.

redceder1: People love to say Carr left the cupboards bare, but that is not how I remember it. I remember hearing a suction sound after RR came to town and shoved a new system down players throats even when the talent wasn't there to get that done. That is bad coaching. You do what Tressel did. Came to town, took some time to see what was working, and what could be changed. If the current system is working, you don't outright scrap it, you make some tweaks until you can do some recruiting to have the talent for your envisioned approach. RR sacrificed years of Michigan records, and many players who already were at Michigan, just to put a system in place that wasn't appropriate for the current players. Carr is a Michigan guy, and it is doubtful he would have done anything to hurt the program. If Michigan didn't love him, it wouldn't have given him a bonus he wasn't entitled to unless he stayed another year and in addition hired him at his full salary to work in the Athletic Director's Office. Another mistake RR made was not to utilize Carr more to ensure a smooth transition.

Brandon needs to fix the Basketball program too! OSU and MSU have great basketball programs and have something to look forward to after Football season ends. While Bo was a great coach he lost some big end of season games which ultimately were the ones that mattered. In fact 5 bowl games in a row 75-79 for those who remember). During this time in the In the 70's Michigan Basketball was really exciting and after a few weeks of mourning over the football season we had great Basketball to watch. There's no reason that U of M shouldn't have good football and basketball programs again and I hope that Brandon can get M-Sports to a much higher level that Don Canham achieved in the 70's & 80's.

St. Lou, you're right on all points relative to Sagan and Chizik. My point was that it is getting harder by the week to get the very top talent to come to AA. I wasn't suggesting that Saban or Chizik are a good fit. Stop for a minute and think about what would it take to get coach K or Izzo to come to Michigan. That is the type of talent we need for UM football. Our football program is not in much better shape than our BB and getting top talent is comparable to trying to get Coach K. You can argue that our FB futures are much higher than our BB futures. Many of us have been saying 'wait until next year' since 2008. Those people will take issue with comparing our vaunted FB team with our unvaunted [is that a word?] BB team. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. We have fallen much further than we want to admit, maybe not quite as far as the rest of the country seems to think.

Dustin, you sound about a smart as a piece of wood. First, RR has had only 2 years of recruiting, first year he was hired late. Oh, and why dosen't Lloyd get blamed for any of the lack. He knew he was going to retire and sluffed off of the recruiting in his last year. Believe me, Lloyd has an ego.. when he realized that Ron English would not be considered, he didn't want anyone else from a different background to succeed.

Rich Fraud under your garbage excuses. We have seen the worst defensive recruiting in Michigan history. The worst losing record in Michigan history under his past 3 years of complete nonsense. The largest margins of losses in Michigan history. The worst amount of yards per game given up in Michigan history. Complete failure to address the FG and Punting dilema. Going into game after game with the insane gameplan of intentially not punting for field position. Not attempting FG's game after game because his lack of recruiting on special teams. Today gambling on 4-12, 4-17 etc. If D.Robinson was not such a freak athlete Rich Fraud would not even win a game with his bizarre deperate coaching. Rich Fraud should be driven to the Michigan border and bannished forever. These kids should be blamed your blunders you should Rich Fraud.

Listen guys, I love Michigan with all my heart. I want to win just a bad as all of you do. I'm not a Rich Rod lover, but he is the coach of my team, and I don't believe things will get better any faster with another coach. I've heard this quote today during the broadcast and remember hearing it often this season... "It's been a problem all three years under Rich Rodriguez." The sad thing is that it's been used for various topics. Turnovers, special teams, tackling, etc. Doesn't that really say it all? No improvement, dumb mistakes and soft play are some of the ONLY consistencies we've seen in three years. (That and excuses from the coaching staff) I'm glad most are saying enough is enough. Coach Goober must go and he must go as soon as possible. The longer he stays the longer it will take the program to recover. Can anyone believe the utter lack of intensity in today's game? It was like a scrimmage for OSU. That's not just frustrating, it's flat out sad.

Ah yes, the inevitable "Harbaugh's record is the same as RichRods" canard is floated once again. This is a complete and utter strawman, since the situations are not even close to being similar, but it's fun to play pretend, isn't it? Harbaugh stepped into a program that was worse than Indiana and now has them sitting at #4 in the country. Think about that. If IU hired some guy and 4 years from now had them ending the season in the Rose Bowl and ranked #4, we'd all be marvelling at the job that person did. Now RichRod on the other hand, took a program that hadn't had a losing season in 40 years and had went 9-4 the season before he arrived and immediately drove them into the ditch. I'm trying to think of a comparable situation in sports history and I just can't come up with anything. The comparison of Harbaugh to RichRod is just flat out silly.

Look, all you nerds who think Harbaugh is going to come here are crazy. Jim has his eyes on the NFL. Both of his brothers coach there, with one of them being a head coach. We need someone who will want to be here for the long haul, for years! What we don't need is a Nick Satin, come for a few years and then buck for the NFL. Do any of you remember how poorly the last "looking for a coach venture" went? Let's give Rich "ONE" and I mean "ONE" more year. And when I say one more year, I mean that with a different defenceive scheme and new D coach. Don't just write stupid stuff guys, without even thinking that what you are writing is a possibility.

aarox Nick Saban left the NFL (Not For Losers, so he had to scram) and took over a VERY down Bama team...cuz he was looking to make a comeback. Gene Chizek--nice story, unless you start to question why this year's Iowa State Coach is in running for Coach of the Year...cuz Gene Chizek left a friggin MESS GOD-AWFUL team he could NOT coach at Iowa State. Hmmm...buy him, er, give him Cam Newton and he's suddenly the Savior. ALL of you coach firing geniouses should take a long, hard pull from whatever homegrown concoction you've been drinking or smoking--each of these coaches was HATED somewhere earlier!!! Even Harbaugh has taken 3 years to be above.500 in a season...and yet, HE'S THE ONE!!! Wow, let's put on our big boy college football pants and realize a new coach is not a panacea. If RR was going backwards, i would agree...he's just not moving fast enough. Well, too bad. On his current track, this team wins 9 games minimum in 2011...not bad, and most of you would still want his head. To return to what, the glory days of Bo and all those embarassing New Years day losses??? Build a program. Win a champtionship. Keep moving forward. He needs to go. Look, I'm tired of mich fans going in a annoying voice "he needs another year, come on give him time." He has had his time and needs to go. And the big ten games, I saw no coaching in the games we won.

Oh, there's plenty of head and assistant coaches that would jump at our position, don't get me wrong. We are no longer upper echelon but still have our legacy and long-term reputation. Someone will want to turn this mess around or make a few bucks trying. Harbaugh wasn't on the list but not my doing. That was a national poll, not my making. Everyone has their favorite. Harbaugh would be high on my list too but didn't make this one. My point is that our stock is down, and not just a little. This is not a case of making a few adjustments to get back to where we were. We will come back, but the days of the "Big Two" are probably gone forever. We can choose to live in the reality of today or to live in Pleasantville.

If you honestly believe that.Michigan is no longer an attractive job because they have been down for a few years then you are very misinformed. Also, you left Harbaugh off your list, he has his team ranked #6 with the only loss to the #1 team in the country. Got to believe he is in the running.

There are comments here and elsewhere saying "just" bring in Harbaugh. Yes, a huge improvement, but how do you get him here? This used to be one of the most coveted jobs in the NCAA. Not anymore. Do you think Nick Saban would want this job? Even Brian Kelly? Below are the top 5 candidates for 2010 Coach of the Year (google it). I don't think we could get any of them. Maybe Paul Rhoads. Gene Chizik - Auburn Mark Dantonio - Michigan State Dan Mullen - Mississippi State Paul Rhoads - Iowa State Bo Pelini - Nebraska

Sat, Nov 27, 2010 : 8:53 p.m.

@Jeremy Hallum Once again sir, you are right on point. Jim Harbaugh has the same 3 year record as RR. No one expected Michigan to beat the 5 teams they lost to this year. Look at all the pre-season magazines back in August, they all had UM at 7-5 and the defense would struggle. Ok, UM replaces RR with Harbaugh. Then what? He will have to replace all the players RR recruited with his players. That will take 3 years to due! By the way, Iowa was picked to win the Big 10. Funny, they have the same record as UM 7-5. So if you get rid of the emotions, things aren't that bad, plus UM didn't lose to any teams that they were suppose to beat. The current defense we have is all of Carr's recruits, and we did lose to App State with Ron English. You will never win in any conference with so many inexperienced players. We made progress this year even with a subpar D which is better than the last two years. Texas is home for the winter, I guess Mck Brown should be gone too? True UM fans will root are team on in the bowl game, not worry about who the coach should be. RR didn't get dumb over night, give the man some time folks...

Jeremy Halllum Your comments have some good points, in particular giving RR a chance (four years) to succeed. I would like to know what facts you are observing for you to bet on his success next year? Here success I mean winning all games we won this year plus win over at least one of MSU or Wisc. or Ohio State? I do not think fans will accept losing to these three teams four years in a row.

I empathize with the coach. Coaching in any sport is not an exact science. There are too many variables involved. It is so easy to sit back and criticize someone whose job you really do not understand. If the team had won a few more games, people would claim he had a talented team. Give the man some credit. It is a pressure-filled job. Would anyone on this thread like to walk in his shoes for a season?

Simply because we want to beat OSU so badly does not mean that RR--or JIM H for that matter--would get the job done with this young of a team. Brandon needs to watch the extra preparation for the Bowl game and UM needs to be ready to play and win. After that event, Brandon will have to make a call based on many factors INCLUDING the continued struggles agains upper tier big ten teams. I mean, if the team is young and improving, you would still expect losses to some or even most of the upper tier teams, if you used common sense. He recruits well and his teams have not quit a game i have watched. They outplayed OSU right out of the gate, but fell prey to their own youthful ways. Watch the Bowl prep and have a cold one to cool off your passion, folks...OSU was not in danger of losing today and u should have known that if you seriously watch any college football!

I like these people who chant "Harbaugh" "Harbaugh" Come on people. He crapped on the program 3 years ago, and you still want him? Whatever, he's made his bed at this point, and I doubt he'd want to come over here at this point and have to go through the same things RichRod has with the so-called "fans" who want Bo or Lloyd back. If we fire Rich after 3 years, we'd be lucky if we could get Ron English let along Harbaugh. Lets also not forget that Jim was: 3-9, 5-7, 8-5 his first three years at Stanford, building a program from the ground up. I know some of you think that Lloyd walked on water, but his last two draft classes only turned out 5-6 players that have been able to play well, let alone play well at Michigan. It's hard for a team to be successful without talented senior leadership at every position, and that's what Michigan has been lacking. I support Rich Rodriguez, and I hope to see him roaming the sideline for the next two years. If we regress significantly next year or the next, I hope he's gone, but he has to have his chance, PERIOD, otherwise there will be no talented coach that wants to run the show here at Michigan, and you can take that to the bank.

Hard to top this mediocrity: 7-17 in the Big Ten; 0-3 against MSU; 0-3 against OSU; zero wins against Big Ten teams with a winning record; worst defense in UM history. I only saw part of the third quarter and all of the fourth quarter, and it was a humiliation of UM - OSU clearly played keep away in the second half. With such a huge lead, they just kept UM out of the end zone, and didn't really try to score at all. It is a tall order to right this ship, even if RR is axed now.

If we stay the course, we need to hire a Press Secretary. Sheesh this is embarrassing. Do not put RR in front of the media!

Lack of size, lack of discipline, lack of talent, lack of coaching. Let's move on Mr.Brandon. Make your move!

The lack of size AND speed from the U-M team is concerning. Throw in a heavy dose of confusion from the coaching staff and you have a recipe for disaster against higher level teams. Rich Rod needs to polish up the resume for his next coaching job - in Division II where he will be able to terrorize the smaller programs.

Kumbaya? What in the hell is he talking about? He wished we'd played better. Well, we wish you'd coached better. Good riddance.

Brandon must make a change now, while there is still time for a new coach to put his stamp on the 2011 recruiting class.
