Denard Robinson starring in Indiana film room, hanging with Professor Tressell and more links

By Rich Rezler

Our weekly trip around the Internet to catch up with news about future Michigan football opponents:

Indiana You want some juicy Indiana info? That'll be $5.95, please.

No, we're not extorting Michigan fans craving Ben Chappell insight. It's just that the most in-depth coverage of Indiana sports comes from the Bloomington Herald Times, and accessing its website requires a subscription. If the headline "Denard Robinson is 'scary good'" piques your interest, throw down the six bones and read it -- and more.

If you can wait one day for some Herald Times input, its lead Indiana writer, Dustin Dopirak, will participate in our "beat writer breakdown," which will appear on AnnArbor.com tomorrow morning. Check back.

Until then, let's keep on surfing:

• Of course there's another little paper out Indiana way that does some good stuff. Terry Hutchens of the Indianapolis Star says Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson has been the antagonist of the Hoosiers' recent film study. "You throw the tape on and you kind of start to look for the cape and the 'S' on his chest," IU defensive ends coach George Ricumstrict said.

• Tight ends Max Dedmond and Ted Bolser are getting involved in the Hoosiers' high-powered passing game.

• Adam Rittenberg at ESPN.com writes "all signs point to Indiana and Michigan putting up a basketball score a few hundred feet away from Assembly Hall."

• Indiana officials expect Saturday's game to be a sellout. That's notable since the last time IU drew more than 50,000 fans for a game against an opponent other than Ohio State or Purdue was against Michigan in 1992. One quote in that story from the Indianapolis Star may be surprising to U-M fans: "A lot of our big crowds in recent years have come about because Ohio State or Purdue wind up buying a lot of tickets," Glass said. "But this is different. Michigan has never traveled that well and this is being driven by Indiana people."

• Associated Press college football writer Ralph D. Russo discusses the merits of the pistol offensive formation being used by Indiana and other teams.

Michigan State • Greg Johnson of the Grand Rapids Press writes that the Spartans -- who have collected 11 turnovers in a 4-0 start after totaling just 14 in 13 games last season -- want to continue forcing turnovers against Wisconsin.

• Johnson also has a video preview of Saturday's game on MLive.com.

• Before facing Michigan's spread option attack on Oct 9, the Spartans have to deal with Wisconsin's power attack. Win both those games, the Lansing State Journal's Joe Rexrode says, and Michigan State is a legitimate Big Ten title contender.

• And, unless you've been living under a rock, you probably already know that coach Mark Dantonio will be at Spartan Stadium on Saturday.

Iowa • Andrew Logue of the Des Moines Register breaks down Kirk Ferentz's dominance of Joe Paterno as the Hawkeyes prepare to face the Nittany Lions. Ferentz owns more victories over Paterno (seven) than any active coach. And of the 56 coaches who have faced Paterno on at least four occasions, only Bear Bryant (4-0) and former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr (9-2) have a better winning percentage than Ferentz (7-2, .778).

• The Iowa City Press-Citizen looks deeper into the consistency of the Iowa coaching staff, which includes seven of the assistant coaches that have been in the program for at least nine seasons. Ferentz is in his 12th season as the Iowa head coach, but he still hasn’t had to hire a new offensive or defensive coordinator.

Penn State • After some bad special teams performances in 2009, those units have improved this season, reports Bob Flounders of the Patriot-News.

• The Reading Eagle says Penn State hasn't looked like Linebacker U. this season.

• Who's Penn State QB Robert Bolden's biggest fan? His mom, of course.

Illinois • There are a dozen Illinois players left from a team that stunned Ohio State in 2007. The Chicago Tribune says Illinois hasn't come close to reaching that pinnacle again, going 11-18 since the victory in Columbus and losing to all seven ranked opponents in that span.

• Bob Asmussen of the Champaign News Gazette answers five burning questions heading into this year's Ohio State game.

• The News Gazette says a win this year would be bigger than that 2007 upset.

Purdue • Quarterback Robert Marve will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL, the school confirmed Thursday.

• Marve joins Purdue's No. 1 running back, Ralph Bolden, and No. 1 wide receiver, Keith Smith, on the sidelines. That led Adam Rittenberg at ESPN.com to ask two questions: 1.What did Purdue do to deserve this? 2. Did Marve rush back too soon after "tweaking" the left knee Sept. 18 against Ball State?

Wisconsin • Penalties played a big part in the Badgers' loss at Michigan State in 2008. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal says Wisconsin -- tied for second nationally for fewest penalties -- aren't likely to self-destruct again.

• The Journal-Sentinal says the matchup between Wisconsin's 10th-ranked rushing offense and Michigan State's 10th-ranked rushing defense will go a long way in deciding Saturday's outcome.

• Badger wide receiver Al Toon expects to be back in the lineup, and pain-free, against MSU.

Ohio State • The Wall Street Journal spent a day with a particular Ohio State instructor: Jim Tressell, who teaches a coaching class twice per week.

• Doug Lesmerises of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes that Terrelle Pryor can take a licking and keep on flicking touchdown passes.

• Tim May's notebook in the Dispatch includes an item on the Buckeyes offering a scholarship to Jacoby Boren, the younger brother of senior guard (and former Wolverine) Justin Boren and sophomore fullback Zach Boren.

Indiana, Part 2 Considering this feature gets shorter each week, it leaves me with some extra time on my hands. So today's bonus item is a Hoosier SportsNight video report from last year's Indiana-Michigan game:

I would have to say that their reporters are as pathetic as their team...
