By AnnArbor.com Staff

Big Ten Conference officials announced on Monday the names it will use for its football divisions. What do you think of Legends and Leaders?

Im betting that within 3 years, the Big Ten scraps these lame names and goes to a more traditional east-west or something. The reaction to these names are that they have been universally panned.

I couldn't blame Nebraska if they decided that the conference logo and division names are so lame that out of sheer embarrassment they're going back to the Big XII.

I was leaning more toward 'Tastes Great' and 'Less Filling' divisions. What ever happened to 'East' and 'West' for goodness sake?

Somewhere I saw suggestions for divisions called "Embarrassed by an SEC team" and "Soon to be Embarrassed by an SEC team"... Ugh. I long for the day to come when the program I love ceases to embarrass me weekly - on the field or in the media. Now the Big Ten piles on with this garbage? C'mon, man!

Doesn't matter what the names are, just the name that wins it all!

Far too babyish titles and completely lacks any level of professionalism or dignity.

D21, I missed the press conference, but I can only imagine. I have mixed feelings about Delaney. He's done a lot of good for the Big Ten, and at the same time put himself into a position to stifle change in college football for the good of the elite conferences, specifically by preventing a playoff. He uses the guise of bowl game tradition to accomplish this, but few recognize that Delaney is a chief architect of the modern bowl system that is unrecognizable compared to the bowl system of the past he references, which excluded mediocre teams from participating. This is not a knock against Michigan when I say that there is little fun in watching six- and seven-win team compete in bowl games. I don't doubt he is doing what is best for the Big Ten, financially-speaking, but, for college football as a whole, if it is a fair and meaningful ending to the season you seek, Delaney is a villain.

RudeJude, Thanks for uncovering this Tar Hell conspiracy. Delany smacks of nothing but elitism & snobbery when introducing these horrid & misaligned names.

It bears noting that Jim Delaney graduated from the University of North Carolina, undergrad and law school, a school whose colors are similar to those of the new logo. Is using their colors a nod to Delaney's alma mater?

Boston Garden, The Palace, The Omni. All sounded like C..p when they first came out. The same goes for a lot of pro club names. After a while, like those above will sound normal without raising an eyebrow.

Jim Delany has been watching too much golf on TV. My past, present and future choices for the division names are: Bo and Woody or Big Brothers: UM, Neb, OSU, Wisc, Penn St and Iowa. Little Brothers: Illini, Indiana, Northwestern, Purdue, Minnesota and msu sparties. Well, I'd even choose Theo212 over Leaders and Legends anytime.

1) DaleX64 is right. Petitioning the Big 10 to change their "stupid" choice of names is fruitless and pointless. The answer is to start calling them unofficially the Woody and Bo divisions and make it parti of popular culture. 2) They hired a firm called "Pentagram" to design a new logo. Isn't a pentagram a satanic symbol? I guess you get what you pay for.

It's hard for me to describe how little I care about Big Ten division names. The only reason I'm answering this poll is because this was the first leading headline when I logged in. Surely more important matters (maybe even "news") could be the lead item in the future.

So U of M is one of the legends--folklore from the misty past. Does U of M get to move up to the leaders if it wins some games?

This reminds me of the "Halo" around Michigan Stadium. Who thought of this?....Tom Goss?

We could also just call them "Bo" and "Woody" as nicknames. They might catch on in pop culture. Sorta like how Chris Burman called the Lion's division the NFC "Norris" division

The names are beyond lame. But what does it matter in a league with TWELVE teams that insists on claiming they have TEN? Learn how to count Big ten. So Big 12 was taken... Use your imagination!Lol

The logo: they chose the color so as not to offend anyone by having to see a rival's color. Unfortunately, Carolina Blue is rather bland. Maybe the BIG is a signal we're going to 16 teams soon. But that wouldn't make sense at this point. The names: they chose generic names that make no reference to geography that wouldn't perfectly describe each team (I would have gone with Northern Plains and Great Lakes for divisions) or people who are only connected with one school (Bo and Woody would have been fun for us, but not for the ten other schools). So we have politically correct, bland, uninspired, designed-by-committee names and logos. Rah, Rah.

My 3 year old great-grandson could have come up with better names than Legends and leaders. Come on now, it's hard enough to hold my head up and say I'm a Wolverine fan and now Delamey has to add these horrible name to the conference.

Other suggestions: Blood & Guts Have's & Have Not's Dreamers & Lovers Singers & Dancers Passers & Rushers Dunkers & Dribblers Smokers & Drinkers Lakes & Plains Ginger's & Mary Ann's Guess I'll get used to Legends and Leaders. Of course, Michigan could not be put in the Leaders Division, that would be a nod to the "Leaders And Best". It was a no win deal since they couldn't use North, South, East & West. And they sure as heck could not have used colors! Call it what you will, we have to win whatever they might call the trophy!! Go Blue!

I can deal with the trophy names, and the new logo, but Leaders and Legends? What else can we do to suck the dignity out of this league?

Mon, Dec 13, 2010 : 2:37 p.m.

I would have preferred a "Big" conference and a "Ten" conference to these. What will they use for a single initial to put next to a team name to indicate their conference?

@BlueSTL, I apologize to all 11 year olds out there. You're right, it isn't fair to put them in the same group as the designers of this garbage. If given 5 minutes I'm sure any 11 year old could have come up with something immensely better than this.

Forever27: Please - let's not insult 11 year-olds or MS Paint..... Wow - what a letdown. We went from a "conference super-shuffle of epic proportions" to Nebraska, a couple of lamely and pompously named divisions and a really really boring logo. (No offense to Nebraska)

what a terrible outcome. The division names are ridiculous and the logo looks like it was created by an 11-year-old in MS Paint.

Logo: Blech. Monochrome?? Division names: Yawn. Is this PeeWee football? Award/trophy names: Seriously? Are they awards or acts of Congress?

I can put up with the logo, giving us a double dose of ramming the number 10 down our throats, both in the last 2 letters of BIG (that's IG for you Michigan State Alumn....) and the obvious TEN (for you Ohio State Grads...) The trophies took things up a notch, with another double dose of forcing history upon us, naming each trophy after 2 people. It stinks of "We are so great, with so many great people, that we just couldn't chose." But Legends and Leaders? Seriously? The Big Ten is spending a lot of time and money these days trying to embarrass themselves. Lakes and Plains, something, anything that puts something other than a "We have to remind people how incredibly AWESOME our league is and has been!!!" If you need to throw it in front of people, you have a poor opinion of yourself. That is what this smells of. The Big Ten, in trying to show how important they are, has instead shown their incompetence. Nice Job Delamely!

These are ridiculous. Why doesn't the big ten just "The Best", "Better than the rest" as the two divisions? Legends? Yuk!!
