What is the most important lesson the Michigan football team learned against UMass?

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The Michigan football team is 3-0 but needed to survive a fourth-quarter rally by UMass for a 42-37 victory. Your thoughts?

The lesson learned is we hired the wrong head football coach. I like that now the head football coach is not responsible for the defense? What? RR hired Schafaer and Robinson how has that worked out? It is not coach Robinson's fault he heeds at least 4 years to put his system in and RR and Schafaer left the cupboard bare!!!

Kistian, If RR were simply the offensive coordinator, you'd be right. However, he's the Head Coach. He hired the entire defensive coaching staff and, as the head coach, he is responsible for everything: offense, defense, and special teams. Sorry, but that's the facts. As for everyone's projected outcome of this season, I still think they will win 8 games because, in watching B10 games yesterday, no one stood out as being overly impressive except OSU. Teams will definitely score on UM, but UM should score enough to win some shootouts. Indiana looked flat out bad, while Wisconsin and Iowa did not live up to the hype. Obviously, Michigan didn't look great either, but it's possible to beat some of these teams...except OSU, unfortunately.

Well, what I learned from the first 3 weeks is that we won't be winning any games 17-10, 17-14 this year. If a defense can hold us under 20 points, we WILL NOT win. However, to all the haters out there, that is a very big IF and no one has done it yet. We've given up a lot of yards this year, yet we've still won and last I checked winning is the name of the game...3-0 we'll take it. But, I also know that IF our offense can be slowed, we won't win with our pathetic defense. It is so frustrating to watch guys be out of position, miss tackles, and against UMass, just get blown off the ball. So, to all my fellow Wolverine brothers, we need to not make excuses for our defense, IT'S HORRIBLE, and hope that our offense can continue to outscore our opponents with the #1 weapon in college football...so far, so good...3-0!!

yeah and it was Scott Shafer's fault in 08 and whomever is the DC next year it will be their fault...and so on and so on unless the snake head is cut off at the top.

you people who complain about RR being a bad coach disgust me to no end. i mean really? its on RR if the defense plays poorly? NOT THE DEFENSIVE COACHING STAFF?!?!?!?! i mean come on get real folks RR has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DEFENSIVE CALLS he is our offensive coach primarily and who knows MIGHT have some say in the defense but for 99.9% of the time its G-Rob and company making the calls and doing the teaching/coaching of these players. so before you start saying "FIRE RR!" because the defense plays poorly...think again.

Obviously it's all Lloyd Carr's fault.

umfreak, I don't know if molested is a good choice of words more like manhandled I think is the word your looking for and you very well could be right about us being manhandled on defense when the 10 schedule starts so what do we do? I would like to hear positive thought about how we can balance this offense and defense all I hear is negative remarks, not interesting or helping one bit. There are guys like Sean T that understand the mechanics of the game and I would like to start hearing ideas and not all this useless complaining which is just negativity and of no use. For instance, there are some tough kids on defense that do make some good plays so how do we get the whole defense on board more consistently. Some people are starting to blame coach Robinson and we all know if ya got the horses you'll win the race I don't care who the jockey is. Come on boys and girls let's talk football.

Hey, I am grateful for the win, but I certainly don't understand the "very good things" that the defense had going for it. The performance they had today on defense doesn't have anything to do with playing "flat-footed"; UMass literally had their way on the offensive side of the line of scrimmage, and specifically in regards to running the ball. I realize that some maturing still needs to take place amongst the entire defense, but it's really hard not to think that our defense is not going to be molested once the B10 season starts. Please convince me otherwise.

Man oh Man, you complainers are almost morbid you might work out on the guest list at a funeral but your not the kind of positive fans I want to spend any time with. We Won, my Saturday usual barbecu out here in the desert tasted great we had Ribs, Sausage and corn on the cob. The team played flat I've seen every team in this country play flat at one time or another our defense had some very good things going on and a bunch of missed tackles poor at best but we won. Maybe if RR had given the ball to Robinson another 10 times it would have looked differant. Now I could cry and complain with you pall bearers but not my style, We Won and last year UMASS would quite possibly kicked our butts, the last 2 yrs for that matter. Since you complainers never talk about positive things it only lends credence to your unjust rating of this team which is lame to say the least. It's to bad you boys and girls don't like RR cause he's gonna be our Mich. coach for many years to come. Go Blue!

Sean T... You keep mentioning Cox? Why? He didn't even play.

Michigan didn't play poorly, they played a team that pushed them in all facets of the game. We are fortunate that we have better athletes or we may have not been so lucky today. I'm not going to say that Cox is the answer but he's definitely not a question. Throwing the ball deep is still an issue because we must start to stretch the field as the Big Ten begins. Screens and Hitch passes become easier to defend as the season goes on and those 6 yard-ins too! Congrads on the win, Hail!

They must be getting better as a team they played poorly and still won.

Hey Davood, who said UM would win the BT? That's news to me. Last I heard they were picked to finish 8 or 9. Don't jump of the bandwagon so fast

The key to this season will be the ILL and Purdue games....if we split those games we go 6-6 and get to a bowl game...yaaaaa...

The good news is that the young secondary still has 2 years of drob to mature into a fantastic overall team. The bad news is who the hell wants to wait 2 MORE years to be where the team should've been this year with a better coach.

What is the most important lesson learned? That Coach Rodriguez isn't the right guy for Michigan. Bring on Coach Harbaugh.

I guess Big Blue showed why they're the favorites to win the Big Ten title, didn't they?
