Michigan women's gymnastics fourth at NCAA preliminaries
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The message from coaches and players was clear: Nerves ruled in the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships preliminary competition Thursday.
They expect the team finals to be much different.
The top two seeds, UCLA and Florida, faltered early before rallying late to seal berths in Friday in the Super Six.
The 11th-seeded Michigan team wasn't as fortunate. The Wolverines ended their season after finishing fourth in the evening session at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. Alabama (196.850), Florida (196.775) and Stanford (196.300) advanced to Super Six from that group.
The Bruins (196.875), fifth-seeded Utah (196.625) and fourth-seeded Oklahoma (196.55) advanced from the afternoon session.
"The pressure that people feel to advance is tremendous," Alabama coach Sarah Patterson said. "I think you're going to see a lot of teams — and I hope ours — relax tomorrow night and just really enjoy doing their best gymnastics."
Stanford senior Carly Janiga added: "Super Six is awesome because there's nothing left to qualify for. It's just all out on the last day of the year."
MGoBlue.com reported that the Wolverines began their meet on their nemesis at the NCAA Regional Championships -- balance beam. Two falls in that event put the Wolverines in a big hole that they couldn't escape.
Michigan senior Kelsey Knutson, junior Kylee Botterman and freshmen Natalie Beilstein and Brittnee Martinez will compete in the NCAA Individual Event Finals on Saturday.
