Want the definition of an ideal student-athlete?

According to the Michigan athletic department, it's men's soccer player Alex Wood and softball player Dorian Shaw.

They were named Mr. Wolverine and Miss Wolverine, respectively, at the department's annual academic awards banquet held Monday. The award is presented to individuals who "epitomize the ideal student-athlete at Michigan, being well-known around the athletic department and great role models among their peers."

A total of 335 athletes were presented the U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award at the banquet. It's given to individuals with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher or two consecutive terms of at least a 3.0 GPA. Sixteen athletes had a perfect 4.0 GPA during the 2010 calendar year.

The Mr. and Miss Wolverine awards were part of an additional 16 awards handed out that honored the achievements of student-athletes in the classroom, competition and the community.

Football player Courtney Avery was named the male "Rookie of the Year" as the freshman who demonstrated high academic and athletic achievement.
