Weather forces Eastern Michigan to postpone Sandy Hook Elementary School trip

By Pete Cunningham

Due to the inclement weather expected on the east coast this weekend, the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team has postponed its trip to Newtown, Conn.

The team had planned on hosting a free basketball clinic and carnival for the grief stricken community which had 20 children and six adult staff members shot and killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School by Adam Lanza on December 14.

Teamed with the Newtown Youth Basketball Association, Eastern was scheduled to put on a free, four-hour long event on Sunday for K-8 students called “Smiles & Basketball.” In addition to a basketball clinic there will be a carnival area with games, arts and crafts, face painting, a balloonist and clowns, plus food and prizes.

The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for much of New England from 6 a.m. Friday until 1 p.m. on Saturday and the decision was made Thursday evening to cancel the trip. University officials said the trip will be rescheduled in the near future.

This is a very kind and thoughtful gesture where friendships can be forged and lives changed if only for an instant in positive ways. Makes me proud to be an Alumni.
