The Chicago White Sox signed relief pitcher J.J. Putz to a 1-year, $3 million contract Friday.

He was 1-4 with a 5.22 ERA with the New York Mets last season before bone spurs in his right elbow shelved him for the season on June 9. Putz will serve as a set-up man for closer Bobby Jenks.
