ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg has this short dispatch from Big Ten media day about the conference's coaches favoring a longer regular season in order to stay fresh for postseason games.

He notes some teams are scheduling games beyond the end of the conference schedule, such as Wisconsin putting Hawaii on the slate for Dec. 5, 2009.

There's bigger reasons why the conference's bowl results have been the source of derision in recent years, but shortening the current six-week layoff seems like a small step in the right direction on reversing the bowl results.
