Gay marriage in America: A measurement of citizenship

I didn't know him, but I do remember the talk surrounding him, the ridicule enveloping him. He was in my high school during my years there in the early 1940s and I remember that the talk was antagonistic and hinted at violence, although I was unable to confirm the fact of it. We didn't use the term at that time, but he was gay.

Not dead yet: Heart of the video game arcade still beats at Pinball Pete's

Tekken 5 warriors, pinball wizards, pool hall hustlers, skeeball rollers and a sweaty guy with his own water bottle and fluffy white towel playing Dance Dance Revolution 5thMix.  On a warm Friday evening in May, I made the trip to Pinball Pete’s expecting to write the obituary of the video ...

I’m shocked to learn that Domino’s Board of Directors recommended its shareholders vote against a request that would help the pizza chain stay in step with other major food franchises like McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Burger King - all of which are moving away from cruel confinement practices.

Ann Arbor needs to get up to speed on its speed limits along main roads

Ann Arbor is five years overdue to bring the posted speed limits on our main roads into compliance with state law and accepted engineering practices. The city should set the posted speed limits that maximize safety and the smoothest traffic flow. The Michigan Legislature passed Public Law 85 of 2006, ...

What I want for Mother's Day: Stop stealing our sex toys and go get rapists

Three years ago, I told 5,000 people at Hash Bash, “If you get raided, call me,” which is proof I need a handler or something. Someone to follow me around and say, “No, Charmie, don’t say that.” They call me all right. Hundreds of people, but mostly mothers who are ...

In the two years since the smoking ban went into effect in Michigan, a couple of things have become abundantly clear. The first is that the ban enjoys widespread popular support. The second is that it has done what it’s supposed to do, which is rid public places of second-hand ...
